Returning
Wow. Hi, there. Iâve been off this site for four years, but Iâm actually thinking of coming back!
Not only do other areas of the internet feel increasingly overwhelming, but I am actively trying to build a reading habit back into my life again. The original goal of this blog was to give me some accountability in my journey to read more books, and Iâd love to push myself in that direction again. It may look different around here. (I probably wonât be focusing on photography as much. Maybe do more illustration instead.) But Iâd love to explore the possibilities of using This Year in Books as a creative outlet.
I donât even know if any of you are still around or if you are still interested in my reviews and thoughts, but if you are - HELLO - Iâm glad to see you. And please let me know what youâre reading nowadays!
-Kelly

Do y'all remember being a kid and trying to read in the car while it was dark outside and your parents wouldnât let you turn on the light so you would try to grab snatches of sentences when you passed by street lights

fun story I first became obsessed with the harry potter series and hermione in particular in yr 3 of primary school and I decided I wanted to be like hermione in every way so I started reading *lots* and working super hard in school, got a reputation for bookishness and being the smart kid that I kept up into high school and lol here I am graduating in a few weeks from Cambridge all bc I adored this clever bookworm in a childrenâs book series and absorbed her into my personality as a child like ???
basically long story short female role models in kids media are EVERYTHING
that scene in the second Harry Potter where Harry has no bones in his arm is probably the most disgusting use of cgi
that wasnt cgi they literally removed daniel radcliffes bones for that scene
I hope he got them back
they didnt have the budget to put them back in so for the rest of the movies in the franchise they used cgi to make it look like they did
Papercraft commission of the Golden Trio and their patronuses, which was an absolute delight to work on! Iâd never actually done the HP kids in paper before (save for a very tiny Hermione years ago), so it was a treat to finally make them. Plus I got to try out a new technique with the patronuses, which are made from several layers of transparent paper for a slightly ghostly effect. Delightful!!
If anyone tries to tell you that Shakespeare is stuffy or boring or highbrow, just remember that the word ânothingâ was used in Elizabethan era slang as a euphemism for âvaginaâ.Â
Shakespeare has a play called âMuch Ado About Nothingâ, which you could basically read in modern slang as âFreaking Out Over Pussyâ. And thatâs pretty much exactly what happens in the play.Â
Shakespeareâs Comedies are basically him cramming as many dick jokes and euphemisms as possible into a two hour performance. His Tragedies are him to the same thing, but with more dead people
Once you brush up on your Elizabethan slang, Shakespeare reads like Ye Olden Millennial wrote it, and I love it. xD
I was listening to Harry Potter audiobooks while working recently! Deathly Hallows is my favorite book of the series, and Iâve always loved this scene. Took the opportunity to experiment with some painting techniques while making this fun little piece.

I like to think that âIâd rather be petrifiedâ was started by the students who were actually petrified in CoS and then gradually spread to the general public
my favorite bit in harry potter is when a gangly freckled ginger child with an old pet rat and patched jeans and dirt on his nose awkwardly sits down across from a scrawny underfed lil kid with baggy clothes and broken glasses and lightning carved onto his face and they both think âi must protect this boyâ
And then a bushy haired girl saw then and thought âthese two will never survive without my helpâ

Today is the 27th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. I donât remember a life without the ADA. I donât remember school without the ADA. And I donât remember being a writer without the ADA. The Act means I can go to school, have a job, access buildings. It means that wh
