like specifically with regards to episode three, and the review of the boys’ performance in the tavern. they were each expected to do something kinda cliche - argo, a rogue with a potentially unsavory background, should’ve talked to the criminal; fitzroy, the fancy/wealthy person with a title, should’ve found a way into the castle; and the firbolg, someone connected to nature and who’s lived outdoors all his life, should’ve dealt with the cave.

which completely ignores what each of the characters wanted to do and their interests in branching out or building new skills. there’s very much a “stay in your lane” approach to teaching and to the world in general. what class you are or what skills/magic you have determines your role as a hero/villain or sidekick/henchperson. you’re a necromancer? well of course you’re a villain, have you ever seen a necromancer who isn’t? or you’ve developed magical powers? forget about your knighthood and your sword-training - classic knights shouldn’t have magic! - you’re a sidekick now. stick to what’s expected.

even the whole idea of hero vs villain conflicts is like this. they don’t serve much of a purpose apart from entertainment and fulfilling an expectation - it’s a kingdom, there are skilled/magical people, there should be conflicts and grand quests and etc! even if it’s all a performance with strict roles.
