One of my favourite photos from my trip to Warsaw in 2006
for those unaware today india experienced one of its biggest protests in half a decade. there were protests all over the nation for various causes but the major one was in delhi. all we asked for was the resignation of the education minister because he's failed the students of this nation time & time again. but we were met with brutality, the police had barricaded the main site of protest (jantar mantar). metro stations were shutdown, the public was restrained from reaching the protest site and all the adjoining areas had signal jammers to make sure the crowd had no access to constant updates. they had us blocked from all the sides. they were lathi (baton) charging students from one side & releasing tear gas from the other. you couldn't walk 100 m on streets without having a tear gas shell thrown at you. there were many students, women & kids bleeding — some from their head. some couldn't walk anymore. the police had removed their nameplates & acted with full impunity to resort to unprecedented levels of violence. they were pelting stones at us, beating up people for no reason, forcefully detaining them and attacking us constantly with tear gas & rubber bullets. they wouldn't let you exit either. the crowd was peaceful & looking out for each other yet they were met with violence. i made a friend who was all alone & she asked to join me & my friend because a policeman wouldn't leave her alone. he constantly prodded her for personal info, invited her back to the jeep saying they have food there, wouldn't stop following her around. you couldn't call or ask anyone for help, we were left to fend for ourselves & be on a constant lookout if you did not want to be beaten up to death by police. all for what? asking a resignation? shame on this country.

Facts about involuntary psychiatric hold:
The United Nations recognises it as a form of torture.
It increases suicide risk by 191 times.
It increases the risk of dying from heart disease and stroke by 3.5 times (no shit on that one, forcing extremely high doses of heavy drugs on someone without even titrating it does that)
45% of patients in psych wards have experienced sexual violence during an admission.
You are a shitty person if you try to get someone involuntarily committed.
Some links to back this stuff up, sorry if u posted ur own links op I’ll reblog those if u did
The UN Humans Rights Council report which includes discussions of how stripping the rights of people to accept or decline care erodes their dignity and personhood. Section V: Recommendations subsection 2 explicitly advocates for an end to involuntary hospitalization. This report also cites lots of other relevant data and is worth reading.
“Danger to Self and Others” a study that showed that in “compliers” (ie: people who are edge cases and are committed by some physicians but would not have been by others) rates of suicide and violent crime within three months of involuntary hospitalization rose significantly.
A comparative study that assesses a lot of other studies’ conclusions about the harm of involuntary holds compared to voluntary holds. This one is dense but worth it to understand that this isn’t an issue of data collection, the harm is visible in the aggregate
2023 study that found 45% of patients report being sexually assaulted in the psych ward. This study also notes that the numbers could be more, due to patient fears of reporting.
Here’s an article I personally find fascinating on the odd legality of psych holds in the US (do the cops have the right to seize your stuff if they think you’re a danger? Why the fuck are cops being allowed to make these assessments? How the fuck is this legal? Should it be legal?)
Having a loved one going through a mental health crisis is a horrible feeling. And it can feel right to try to send them to a “professional” or call in a wellness check when you can’t handle it or can’t get to them physically. But it really can’t be overstated: involuntary psych holds are proven to harm those who are struggling far more than they are proven to help.
If you are being involuntarily committed or fear you might be, you do still have rights and you are not subject to the same restrictions as if you were being arrested. The legal article I linked talks about it a bit for the US, and here’s a document on it for California.
