At the turning of the year
It’s at the solstices, like self-satisfied clockwork, the snide posts on the internet appear asking people how they’ve wasted their year. I’m sure you’ve seen a few “congratulations for another year wasted”.
These statements are not only stupid but patently false, and I am so delighted to refute them.
Firstly, you, yes you, as a person have intrinsic worth. You have nothing to prove to some voice on the internet spewing cruelty. You have not wasted your year.
If you feel like you could’ve done more this year, you’re not alone! Many people could’ve done more and it’s a good starting point for figuring out your future goals. Very few people achieve all their goals during a year, time goes fast and things are very busy. Focusing on your failures and beating yourself up about them is a damn fine way to shoot yourself in the foot and not improve. And that’s exactly what posts like that are trying to do!! They are built to throw people into self-blaming shame spirals.
Secondly, we are living in a time of seemingly constant upheaval and conflict. Social media bombards us with more tragedies than our ancestors could fathom in the space of a day. It’s important to keep that in mind when wondering where all the time and your energy has gone. It is no wonder people are exhausted all the time!
I find it helps to look hard for the beauty and good in the world—Genuinely looking at the world and seeking places of magic and light through all the bombardment of dense, awful stuff thrown at us. Of course, I’m not saying “Positivity All The TIme! No SAdness Ever !!” because that’s ridiculous. We’re human and being on this planet is hard work. But training yourself to see the special glimmers of light in your own life and the world can help so much in not being discouraged and overwhelmed by the amount of bullshit going on. It helps in those times when all you feel is grey, to know that things will get better again.
Many might say “oh those posts aren’t that deep” but to me, they are. They do nothing to help other people and only exist to tear others down. And one should always be very suspicious of things like that.
You are not a waste. Your time, effort, love, creativity, and laughter are never a waste.
