I know this trophy is supposed to represent a triathlon, but it looks like a cyclist award for attacking pedestrians
She got the idea for the study while walking with her advisor at Stanford to discuss her thesis topic, and the paper she eventually published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014 is sharp enough that it should have ended the seated meeting on the day it came out.
She ran 4 experiments on 176 people. Same person tested twice. Once sitting, once walking. The creativity tasks were the standard ones psychologists have used for decades to measure how good a brain is at generating novel useful ideas.
81% of participants in the first experiment produced more creative ideas while walking than while sitting. In the second experiment, 88%. In the third, 100%. Every single person walked into a more creative version of themselves. On average, people generated 60% more novel useful ideas the moment their legs started moving.
The skeptical question is the obvious one. Maybe it was the fresh air. Maybe it was the scenery passing by. Maybe it was the change of environment doing the work, not the walking itself.
Oppezzo killed every one of those explanations with one experimental decision. She put people on a treadmill facing a blank wall. No scenery. No fresh air. No environmental change. Just legs moving in place while staring at white drywall. The 60% boost held.
Then she ran the experiment that closed the case completely. She took participants outside in two conditions. Half of them walked through a Stanford courtyard. The other half were pushed through the exact same courtyard in a wheelchair. Same outdoor stimulation. Same scenery passing at the same speed. The only difference was whether the legs were moving.
The walkers produced dramatically more novel high-quality ideas than the wheelchair group. The outdoors did almost nothing on its own. The walking did everything.
She also tested the opposite kind of thinking. Convergent thinking. The kind where there is one right answer and you have to narrow down to it. Word puzzles where 3 words share a hidden fourth word that connects them. The seated participants did slightly better on these. Walkers got slightly worse.
Walking is not a general intelligence enhancer. It does one specific thing. It opens up the divergent search inside your brain. The part that generates options. The part that produces unexpected connections. The part that takes a problem and finds five ways into it instead of one.
When you need to converge on the single right answer, sit down. When you need to find the answer in the first place, get up.
The mechanism is now well understood. Walking selectively activates what neuroscientists call the default mode network, the system inside your brain that runs when you are not consciously focused on anything. The DMN is where mind-wandering happens. Where memories cross-reference each other. Where ideas that have been sitting in separate folders inside your head finally bump into each other.
When you sit at a desk and force yourself to concentrate, you suppress the DMN. When you walk at a natural pace, the executive part of your brain gets just busy enough handling the walking that the DMN comes online and starts doing the work that focus was blocking.
The most useful finding in the entire paper is the one almost nobody quotes. The boost did not turn off the moment people stopped walking. Participants who walked first and then sat back down stayed elevated. Their next round of seated creativity work was still significantly better than people who had been sitting the whole time. The rest lingered for at least several minutes after the legs stopped moving.
You do not need to do creative work while walking. You need to walk before the creative work. The brain holds the state.
Edited down a long tweet. (x)

“bits to use in everyday conversations”
My allies and I will not ride at dawn. First we will shower and eat breakfast and go to the bathroom and recheck that we packed everything
I feel like we lose out somehow when we reduce salvation to heaven or hell, riches or punishment. We lose the fact that the goal was God wanted to hang out with us forever, and then we broke that relationship, so he’s giving us forgiveness and salvation not just in terms of like debt but in a oh no here’s a way we can move past that still so you can do what you were meant to do (hang out and do cool stuff with Me forever)
“The eternal Father, by a free and hidden plan of His own wisdom and goodness, created the whole world. His plan was to raise men to a participation of the divine life. Fallen in Adam, God the Father did not leave men to themselves, but ceaselessly offered helps to salvation, in view of Christ, the Redeemer "who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature"
—Lumen Gentium
it wild to me that there are people out there who aren't interested in history
like wdym you don't think about the fact that women would tell stories as they made butter in the same way we listen to podcasts today? wdym you don't think about that one Chinese poet who wrote about how much he loved his cats hundreds of years ago? wdym you don't think about the fact that we found a gravesite of a young child surrounded by flowers from THOUSANDS of years ago? wdym you don't think about how people wrote "i was here" into the walls in Pompeii? wdym you don't think about the little egyptian boy who drew little doodles at the top of his school works more then a thousand years ago?
wdym you don't think about the fact that people, no matter the place, time, or social status, are fundamentally no different from you. that they loved the same as you, enjoyed the same things you did, dreamed about a better life the same way you did. that despite how seemingly detached you are from these people, in time, place, and culture, the things you do and what u are is so undeniably human that it transcends time and space
This is why I love history so much. It’s why I study it and want to tell the stories from it. I want to be able to say “see this person from so many years ago? This is their story. This is what they did or who they were” and have someone go “oh dang, they’re not that different from me.”
I think about that scene in Mulan when she picks up the doll in the snow and how, as a kid, my first thought was “hey, that little girl had a doll she loved just like I love my teddy bear.”
I know things were different father back in time. Of course they were. But so many people want to look at how they were different. I love the ways they were the same as us.
“Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat the class if they want to earn their degree.” ~India Holton

My older kids all read Harry Potter and the half Blood Prince on their own but I have been reading the series out loud to my youngest. So for the first time in my life I had to read this section out loud. I barely got through it cause I was so choked up. Molly Weasley is my favorite part of these stories. Fleur is so fiercely devoted to Bill. This scene is so good.
I'm not a gatekeeper so yall. the best thrift stores are the ones that look bad. do not go to cool trendy thrift stores with hot alt twenty-something employees. (I mean you can if you want but enjoy paying $40 for a fuckass shirt.)
here's what you actually want in a thrift store:
in a rich town
run by a church
staffed exclusively by little old ladies
most of the clothes will be butt ugly. but they will also be 1) good quality and 2) cheap af. the 70 year olds running the shop think a thrifted shirt should be $3 and they are correct. everyone else shopping there is over the age of 45 so you won't have to throat punch any depop resellers over a cunty little top. you will get hyped up by old ladies and if you frequent the same shop they may start trying to set you up with their grandkids. everyone wins and who knows their grandkids might be hot.
If it doesn't look like the Ark of the Covenant might be stashed in the back somewhere, don't waste my time.
The Room of Requirement
The Pink Panther, Morning
i think the marvel vs dc conversation is bad because they're very different animals and i think its very obvious in how they approach the avengers and the justice league, even if you compare it between dceu and mcu, because at the end of the day superheroes in marvel seem to be allied with the governemtn regardless of their cause, like shield and avengers seem to be deeply connected in both fucntion and system because they're lead by a military guy and then the league in itself is funny because literally no one gets paid, they consider it volunteer work, that they operate outside of the planet so they would not be beholden to one state
the Avengers: you don't understand, we HAVE to work with the government. to protect people.
the JL, in their satellite floating just outside of Earth's jurisdiction: lmao ok

Clint is defending the 256M size choice, however the real reason it “is so useless” is a USB arrow, like all USB plugs, will never be oriented correctly on the first try.
