Did you see the Midnight Channel last night? đş
Baby's first cross stitch, now with the matt, frame, and all the details finally, finally done. The last image is to show the slight bubble of the tv screen

can we send up a quick thank you to pdf uploaders, torrent seeders, copy sharers, scanlators, fansubbers, digitizers, paywall dodgers, and various other internet archivers for making niche art and information more accessible in a media landscape where all but the most profitable mainstream are often tossed aside and left to rot

Chat, is it considered âabusive roommate behaviorâ to release a raccoon into the living space after you have asked your roommate for months to please clean up their messes (they do not pay any of the mortgage)
For context, when I used to live alone I would do something called âPrincess Timeâ where I would do an initial sweep (to remove any significant hazards) and then I would release a raccoon into the living area and clean. This helped because I would 1) feel like a princess and 2) the raccoon would bring attention to things my ADHD brain had decided to ignore and Iâd quickly clean that stuff up.
So like, if Iâm expected to clean the house now, I will be doing it in the way that is most effective for me. And anything that has not been cleaned up after months of having sit-down talks and sending reminders and being promised things will change, might be deemed âtrashâ by the trash panda and thrown away.
We havenât done since we moved into the house, because I didnât want to cause my roommate or their cats destress or have their things destroyed by a raccoon
I am a raccoon biologist and one of the few people in the state allowed to take in captive bred raccoons that had been possessed illegally. The raccoon in the photos is Moonshine, but she is currently at the animal sanctuary where I work as I had been quarantining multiple new intakes from an abuse case. I still have two males (Rum Tum Tugger and Electra) left in my home enclosure as we are getting them neutered and then hopefully sending them to an AZA accredited zoo.
I wanna make things very clear that underneath all the whimsy, I am a trained professional.
Those vibes are likely because Iâm the original creator of Dashcon and my personality has not changed since 2012 lmao

Itâs a pine fall day today in Russia.
Things just happen in Russia in a unique way that Iâm not sure can ever be explained. Like how a fucking meteor landed in the middle of the Russian wilderness and resulted in the equivalent of a nuclear bomb going off but no one really even noticed.
russia requiring drivers to have dashcams for insurance purposes is literally the best law ever enacted bc we get to see shit like this
Is that why??? That seems like a really good idea!
Please feed us more enigmatic Russian dashcam videosâŚ
!!!! I thought âpine fall dayâ had typos in it, but, wow, was I wrong!

purge of 2002? of 2012? what ARE those?
Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten.Â
They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it.Â
The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.
Itâs what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty ficâŚAdultFanfiction was the one I went toâŚbut thousands of fics would never be recovered.Â
Shit like the Great Purges and the Strikethrough of Livejournal eventually led to fans banding together to create A03, which I would have absolutely KILLED for when I was 15.
Back up ao3 was created by fans?
ItâsâŚright on the main page.Â
I love this because I will bet you that persefv has read that bit we are all so inundated with hyperbole and advertising that says that the consumer is somehow in charge of whatever product they are shilling that we all just assumed this was another sales tactic.
But weâre not even⌠selling anythingâŚÂ *quiet sobs*
No ads. No subscriptions. No data selling.
We are the definition of âwhat it says on the tin.â
Is there any way to spread this info?Â
THE OTW WAS CREATED BY FANS SO WEâD HAVE AN ARCHIVE THAT WASNâT SUBJECT TO CORPORATE REVIEW.Â
Nonprofit, so that nobody could ever say, âthis isnât making enough money; itâs getting shut down.â (See: Geocities, Quizilla, Figment, G+.) With lawyers involved and a firm awareness of the legalities of fanfic, so nobody would decide âweâve gotten a nasty letter from a megacorporation with lawyers, so weâre hiding because we canât afford to face a lawsuit. (Jedi Hurtaholics, Trevizoâs Millennium site.) With teams, so that an argument between co-mods didnât result in the destruction of a whole archive. (Gryffindor Tower, Detention.)
AO3 IS OUR SITE.
It is by fans, for fans. Fans do all the coding. All the legal paperwork. All the abuse/tos violation complaints. Fans make all the choices about policies. Fans decide how to run the fundraisers. Fans write the blog posts. All the volunteer staff are fans; all the people who train them are fans. Fans wrangle all the tags.Â
(And the other OTW projects, too. Fans manage the entries at Fanlore. Fans run the Open Doors project. Fans publish Transformative Works and Cultures.)
EVERYONE WORKING FOR THE OTW LOVES FANDOM. Wants it to survive. Wants it to be awesome for everyone.
(Knows that it canât be awesome for everyone; some approaches to fandom just clash hard. But they strive to minimize those clashes as much as possible, because they love fandom.)Â
AO3 is not some company that decided, âweâll make a site for fanfic and thenâŚâ I donât know what people are thinking is the reason. Money? Data harvesting? Tax shelter? Amusement and pity?
Nope; AO3 was fans saying, âLivejournal sucks; weâre tired of this fucked-up ârebuild every three yearsâ garbage; WE NEED TO OWN THE DAMN SERVERS.â
Thatâs the âof our ownâ part of the name. OTW isnât a âthemâ running the site âfor us.â Itâs âusâ making places for âusâ to share what we love with others of âus.âÂ
You don't see many homeless women on the street because they're getting trafficked and raped. Hope that helps because u ppl are so dump with your âsociety cares more about women that's why the majority of the homeless are menâ no it's because they're getting assaulted and pimped in motels that's why u don't see them.
Seriously. I work in a warehouse and often have to deal with printer ink, so I don't wear nice clothes. I wear loose t-shirts with ink stains and don't retire ripped jeans until they tear in an impractical place. That's gotten me mistaken for a homeless person on several occasions.
A woman gave me a Tim Hortons card one time while I was waiting to get into a (nonfancy) restaurant and I was touched but couldn't figure out why. Until I realized that tears in my clothes + grocery bag instead of a purse + wasn't wearing makeup (because I never do) = had her likely thinking I was homeless and just trying to warm up in the restaurant's anteroom. She didn't have cash on hand, so gave me what she could. That was really nice of her.
On another occasion, a homeless man approached me while I was waiting to cross the street to tell me he could "take [me] some place nice". Broad daylight.
I was walking home from work one day, also in broad daylight, stopped to pick up a feather for my hat, and a car with several young men stopped next to me on the busy street to ask if they could give me a ride somewhere.
Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious why you don't see many homeless women. They're either trafficked or they're hiding from the men who would traffic them--from homeless older men to young men who can afford a car in one of the most expensive cities in the country.
The amount of men who swarmed like sharks around blood in the water when I was on the street was alarming. One double my age who I asked for a cigarette told me how "sexy" I am multiple times and tried to keep in touch. Another followed me around my storage unit and tried to hang out with me and lingered after I said no. I acted like the rest were fucking wallpaper and said no more than "hello."
My shelter was unisex and there were triple the amount of men in there pissing all over everything getting kicked out for fighting and requiring a fence to keep the mostly elderly women safe. I guarantee the vast majority of if not all of them deserve less bed space and less oxygen than women who are being trafficked.
I was homeless for a short period as a young woman. The first night I tried to sleep in my car in an empty lot I woke up to a man pressing his face and hands against my window, just watching. He left after I woke up but I never made that mistake again and exclusively slept in crowded public places during the day.

so a very long time ago, my dad worked with an arson investigator
this guy was often one of the first people on the scene following a suspected arson, once emergency services had done what they needed to do. at times, there were also civilians on the periphery. often, they were freaking out, and understandably so; their home or workplace had just, quite literally, gone up in smoke
this investigator wouldnât try to calm them down. he wouldnât comfort them or be a shoulder to cry on.
instead, heâd walk up to the person most visibly losing their shit, hand them a fire extinguisher, and say âhey, can you keep an eye out for any other fires, and if you see one, can you put it out with this?â
of course, there was no actual risk of another fire. he wouldnât be on the scene investigating if there was even a chance that the fire wasnât completely put out. but the bystander didnât need to know that
because that person, without fail, would immediately pull it together, take the fire extinguisher, and stand guard. they were, at least temporarily, calm enough for this investigator to do this job
my dad has told me the parable of the fire extinguisher a hundred times, and i think about it a lot. i think about what it says about people and crises. i think about what it says about the grounding power of having a purpose. and i think about the importance of letting someone help me through something, even if that help is just going to be another casserole to throw into the freezer, because useless or not, that fire extinguisher might be the only thing holding them together
getting really tired of going to craft markets and seeing 17 stands of ""homemade jewelry"" where the homemade part is attaching earring hooks to mass produced charms bought in bulk online. i think we've lost sight of the idea here folks
