We're a real person* we're just antisocial
idk i dont mean this with as much derision as might bleed out but it is exceedingly clear that some of you were never considered retard-faggots as a child and therefore never subject to the subsequent torments Pure Children would subject Retard-Faggot Children to.
[* the use of these slurs is not reclamatory but is also not pejorative. the use of these slurs is academic, technical, and descriptive.]
like i was a social outcast since the moment i could speak. like this was my entire life and it literally never changed. i continue to be a social outcast for the same exact reasons + several more (physically disabled now etc) and like. idk i feel like it is relevant and on some level, valuable, to my analysis that i understand this experience. like i used to be physically beaten by other children regularly for the crime of being Incorrectly Built. Transgressively Autistic and Fruity. like forreal actually Fruity in a way where people would call you slurs in elementary school. like no offense to people who experienced the profound violence of the deep closet but like. my closet wasn't even made of glass it was like I was pretending i was in the closet as a mime but every single person in the world could Smell the faggot coming off me a mile away and would very succinctly inform me of this through violence. and the physical violence wasn't even the worst part.
idk where im going with this. i guess it's just "I respect many of you but it is clear that you and i had very different experiences of Retard-Faggotry as a child." and further it is clear that this website continues to participate in veiled attempts at reenacting the childhood game of "smear the queer / retard"
i say "this website" which is silly. of course it's not just "this website" it's like society writ large. i guess just as a product of my particular form of perpetual social-outcast-ness i continue to primarily interface with actual interactions with strangers through social media. since for the most part i am physically disabled and psychologically "fucked" enough that i spend most of my time indoors atp.
also on that note like. i know that this is the Quirky Gay Website and so we understandably focus on stuff about being gay/trans/etc but like. i say this As a Gay Trans. i do not think people sufficiently understand or contend with the extent to which autistic people are constantly and consistently subject to immense violence both interpersonal and structural. like frankly I've experienced far more of both by merit of being autistic than for being a transgender woman or. even for being racialized. like i've nearly gotten fired from jobs for doing them autistically. if you apply for housing autistically you're likely to get rejected. if you do something autistically at the doctor's you're likely to get disregarded and infantilized and dismissed. and these are just like the somewhat trivial, normative, veiled ways autistic people Who Can Mostly "Pass" As Allistic are subject to violence.
obviously this is like a single possibly questionable source and on wikipedia of all places but just for a sense of rough scale i would like to offer this statistic.
that is not a coincidence and that is not because autistic people "Cannot Contribute To Society" or whatever. it is an expression of structural violence which exists in service of the biopolitical regime of imperial capital and specifically to the benefit of allistic people.
and i know we Talk about autism nowadays as this kind of quirky trait, and the implication is that this is a form of Difference that Society Has Come To Accept. but that's just not true. autistic people continue to be the subjects of immense violence. if anything, it's just that the violence has gotten subtler, more insidious, in how it identifies its victims. "the vibes were off." "idk she was just kind of odd." "she was really awkward and kind of uncomfy." "not very professional." "abrasive and grating." the knife has just found a better way of hiding under the folds of the robes.
autistic people continue to be some of the most vulnerable people in society but especially under the system of imperial capital, where human autonomy is directly linked to potential labor output under a very particular paradigm. and when combined with the fact that the average autistic person is undoubtedly profoundly traumatized by how they are treated for being autistic, this confers a significantly higher rate of "mental illness" among autistic people which further forces us onto the outskirts of society where we are more and more vulnerable to exploitation and violence.
and like, obviously this should not have to be true to justify the cessation of violence against autistic people. but we literally keep the world afloat. do you know how many industries would shut down immediately, just completely collapse, without the specific labor of the specific skillsets of autistic people? and in particular, how much physical infrastructure would simply cease functioning? every workplace that is held up by "strangely, mysteriously" and incredibly disciplined and rigorous documentation, every computer infrastructural project upheld by One Guy's lifelong commitment to doing this critical project completely thanklessly, every workplace which is carried by That One Woman who seems to understand how everything works even though nobody else does. How many of those people are simply autistic people who have to hide this fact because we are targeted for violence for being this way? And if those are the success stories, the ones who managed to slip under the radar because they weren't Visibly Autistic Enough to get caught, how many more of us could be rotting in living circumstances where we are essentially kept prisoner by "caretakers"?
[source]
idk. i care very deeply about this. and it bothers me how frequently it seems other people do not.
im kind of expecting this post to not get a lot of traction and im trying to determine if that'll be primarily because allistic people will be made profoundly uncomfortable by it or because autistic people are going to be understandably afraid of sharing it. i don't mean this as like a reblog bait comment i just genuinely think that this is like a borderline mechanistic phenomenon atp.
What a fucking loser. Reblog if you would love that skylight.

While I'm sure a lot of people would agree with this post, I didn't mention any day of the week nor brought up color theory, so unless people take this reply as a challenge this is gonna be just another flop

Twitter users are defending their right to assume Picasso was a renaissance artist. Tiktok users think watching any film made outside the US makes you a snob. “Replace classic lit with YA and fan fiction” discourse is flourishing. I think we’re just living in anti intellectual times.
it's not anti-intellectualism it's anti-snobbery
Let me ask you this: how many “snobs” have you actually met? Because I have met many people who take interest in art history, watch vintage film or films from films from outside the US (which by the way are not all “arthouse” films), or read and cherish historically and culturally significant literature. But I have never met anyone who will treat me like I’m a bad person for watching Mama Mia or just wanting to be entertained once in a while. I have, however, met people who think art history is stupid and pointless and that those who study it deserve to live in poverty, who are xenophobic and dismissive toward any art made outside the US (or western Europe for that matter), or roll their eyes at people who read literature they consider boring because they’ve never given it a try. In fact, most of the people I know who you would consider “snobs” out of projected insecurity are cautious to bring up their interests because they think they’ll be made fun of. Is anti intellectualism “anti elitist?” At times, but it’s the sort of pseudo populism that fits comfortably within contemporary right wing discourse. Have you paid any attention to politics the last decade or so? If you are allergic to culture and new information, fine. Just don’t claim the moral high ground for it.

It's so weird talking to people who's view of "here's the way life is for everyone" is shattered as soon as they talk to someone with disabilities (physical, mental illness, any). Like you'll say you'll have a problem and instead of helping you they'll argue with you about how you're not actually facing that problem. Like,
Me: Hey, I'm really struggling to find a job and a part of it is my resume. I was depressed & psychotic during highschool so I didn't do anything to gain skills or achievements to put on my resume. I also don't have anyone to put as a reference. What can I do?
Them: You can add your skills, hobbies, clubs you're in, and different volunteer work you've done! You can also get your teacher as a reference.
Me: I already know what to put on a resume, my issue is that I don't have things that I can use. Also, I'm in my mid 20s so I don't know if I can put my highschool teacher as a reference.
Them: Well if you're a part of a church or an activity group, you could add that. Also, think of any projects you've worked on in the past.
Me: I already know you can put these things on a resume. I'm not looking for suggests of things I've already done, I'm looking for what I can do now if I haven't done anything.
Them: There's no way you didn't do anything during highschool?? What about some odd jobs you definitely did for extra money, like babysitting or mowing the lawn?
Me: I spent all of highschool either in modified classes or in bed doing nothing - not even hobbies, what about that do you not understand?
And then you talk to someone who's also disabled and they're like "Here's a bunch of jobs you can do from home that don't pay much but look good on a resume, here's some free online courses that also look good on a resume, here's how you can be making small amounts of money in the meantime, here's some things you can put besides a professional reference, and here are your rights if your future employer tries to take advantage of your disability - which you probably shouldn't tell them about unless you need accommodations."
And suddenly my will to continue trying returns!
c...can we maybe get some of those ideas in full? Pls?
Two other people asked as well so okay! Though this post will be rather long.
Freelance Jobs You Do From Home That Look Cool On A Future Resume
Please research any company before sign up with then. So many companies are scams and pay you way less than you deserve for your work. Go to r/freelancers and search to make sure nobody has had some horrid experiences. There's also usually reviews of a company on YouTube as well.
Transcribing - adding subtitles to videos for deaf and other hard of hearing people. You usually read a big instruction manual, do two or three tests to see how well you can follow the instruction manual, and then get an e-mail if you can work with them or not. Depending on where you sign up, you can also fill out which topics you're knowledable on and less likely to make mistakes on when transcribing.
Translating - same as transcribing, but now you're translating one language into another. I have not done this before, so I'd suggest talking to people who have.
Article Writing - there are different websites you can sign up to work for where someone sends in a request for an article about a certain topic, you can write that article, and if they like it they can purchase it from you. Some websites have a ranking system where the more good reviews your article gets, the more money you'll get paid.
Article Editing - you can also get payed to fix typos and reorganize an article (or list) if writing isn't your thing.
Top 10 Lists - There are different sites that will pay you to write 10 ten lists. They usually require a specific amount of words and have an author's guide on their site.
Graphic Designer - if you go to different generic freelance websites, you can often find people who are searching for someone to design logos for their company or banners for their websites. It helps if you have a portfolio as well.
Virtual Assistent - scheduling appointments, answering calls, and managing email accounts from your own home. I haven't done this one so again, do more research.
Small Amounts Of Money
Qmee - I've been using this app for awhile called qmee where you do surveys for money. Surveys usually pay anywhere in between 30 cents and 2 dollars, and they have a feature where if the survey asks you anything sketchy then you can report them. You can also cash out whenever, like you don't have to build up a certain amount. (If you aren't American, you may only get a couple surveys per day.) An extra 20 dollars a month isn't much but it's nice.
Fiverr - A website where you state your talents and you can take on other people's smaller projects for small amounts of money. A funny example is this YouTube skit where someone paid some people on fiverr to come up with a break-up letter. I believe you can also keep a portfolio for any projects you make during your freelance jobs on fiverr too.
Redbubble - this is where you can put different designs onto different types of clothing, notebooks, mugs, hats, etc. It helps if you have a design that's from a fandom, references a meme, or fufills a niche. You can also go to TeeSpring if you want to put multiple designs on one item, but you'd have to promote your items yourself as TeeSpring has this issue where you can't search for new stores who aren't already popular.
Test Products - once again, please research any company you're going to do this for. There are companies that will send you products for a week or two and ask for a report on how well it works, what you like/dislike, etc.
If You Don't Have Anyone To Put On Your Resume As References
Volunteer Somewhere - animal shelters, tutoring, soup kitchens, summer programs, public libraries, etc. If you're able to volunteer somewhere, you can ask the people there if you can use them as a reference.
Volunteer Online - you can also do online volunteer work if you're unable to do physical volunteer work. Here's a list of examples of online volunteer work which includes things like creating a large amount of thank-you cards, transcribing books into digital form, or answer texts or calls on a crisis line. This may be a better option due to covid.
Add Personal References - friends and family members do work (just don't list them as professional references). It's especially helpful if you've done a project for/with them as well.
Or don't add references at all - references look good on a resume, but unless you're writing a federal resume you kind of don't need them? If someone is interested in hiring you, they may ask if you have any references. You can just say "no, this is my first job" (if it is). They might ask why you haven't worked before, but you can just say that it's personal or private information. Or you can give a vague answer like dealing with family matters.
Once you have some, this is how you would format your references.
None of these are long term solutions and not everything will work out for everybody. These are just helpful suggestions I've received over the years!
If my understanding is correct, the term "frag" originates from Vietnam war times, and it did have to do with frag grenades. Specifically, disgruntled conscripts attempting to kill their superiors feigning misaimed grenade throws.
The way it arrived to competitive multiplayer gaming was during the development of Doom, wherein purposeful friendly fire kills in co-op mode were called "frags" informally, and through metonymy it came to mean kills in PvP modes.
oops my special interest has been activated
'fragging' is the colloquialism for troops attacking their superiors in the vietnam war (not just officers, but just as often NCOs or even just peers they disliked). it was called that because it would typically be done with fragmentation grenade, but not usually during a battle or anything. that wasn't exactly very reliable, plus it didn't exactly leave you with an isolated target
rather, it was the use of fragmentation grenades *on base*; your classic fragging consisted of rolling a fragmentation grenade under the door into the latrines at night after your target went in. this was enabled by the fact that firebases (the typical field base used by americans in the vietnam war) would have crates of fragmentation grenades easily accessible, as the response to hearing something rattle against the barbed wire at night was to simply throw a grenade at it and wait until morning to see if you got anything rather than risk being lured out. so it was a very good anonymous tool for assassinations.
the scale and fear of fragging had an enormous cultural effect on the united states. in the military, it contributed to degrading morale and a variety of programs to counter it, including the first-ever anonymous tip phone line for soldiers to complain about officers. the realization that soldiers would simply kill their superiors if pushed seriously degraded effectiveness in a war where the primary tactic was to go out into the bush and deliberately pick fights. its a huge part of why the US military switched to a volunteer model.
when stories of fragging made it home, it was an immense culture shock for midcentury america, and cemented itself into the news and media. through the 70s and 80s, there was a *lot* of US media about the Vietnam War. the stuff in the 70s was largely extremely critical and extremely cynical, largely made by people who opposed the war, but in the reagan era you saw an uptick in war action movies which... while not typically set in the Vietnam War, were largely concerned with refighting and 'winning' it in the narrative, creating big, stupid action movies like the rambo sequels
this sort of dumbass action movies, along with heavy metal and the satanic panic, heavily influence early first person shooter games. Kevin Cloud, one of the artists on the original Doom, used 'frag' as a term to distinguish killing players from killing Doom's monsters. Doom was built as a single player game first, a cooperative game second, and a multiplayer versus game third, so the language of 'you fragged X' was ported from the cooperative game (where it was used to indicate you'd killed a friendly, idiot) into the multiplayer deathmatch.
from there, it made it to Quake and Unreal, the big arena shooters of the late 90s, and remained the term pretty much until all First Person Shooters were subsumed into the increasingly military-propaganda-y Call of Duty games post Modern Warfare. i have no proof of this, but i suspect it was a term that CoD wanted nothing to do with as they became increasingly reliant on connections to the military-industrial complex, so the term was carefully kept out of marketing and slowly killed it among gamers.
it still persists in places, though. my understanding is that in modern Counter-Strike's community, people still talk about 'frags', which confuses a lot of new people!
it should be illegal to put ads in apps or sites for solitaire or picross or sudoku tbh. playing classic puzzle games uninterrupted needs to be a HUMAN RIGHT
Hey hey
Everyone go download "Simon Tatham's Puzzles" by Chris Boyle
Here is a Play Store link:
40 classic single-player logic puzzles, playable offline, generated on demand
It contains pretty much any famous puzzle I've ever known, with the exception of riddle-based or language-based puzzles. All puzzles are automatically generated by your phone, and highly customizable in difficulty, size, and other variables. Note that the puzzles often have other names than they classically have (e.g. Sudoku is named "Solo"), but almost everything is in there.
The app is free, it is ad-free, doesn't necessarily look pretty but is very functional! Also bc it's all randomly generated on your phone, you don't need to give it access to internet at all! And you get infinite puzzles! And it doesn't ask you for personal info, you don't need an account, they don't want to "send your information to the developer to help develop the app/sell to third parties".
And it has a dark-mode!
This is a collection of 38 single-player puzzle games for the iPhone and iPad. Included games are: Black Box - Bridges - Cube - Dominosa -
it’s on ios too?!

I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence
Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.
Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.
u r absolutely right I have SO many complaints about Windows omg.
For anyone who'd like to follow along, I'm gonna share how to get around those things with group policies bc they're more user friendly and descriptive than registry editor imo :3 I'll also show how to get around needing a Microsoft account to get setup.
For the Device Setup
"OOBE" stands for Out Of Box Experience which is what that setup workflow is. But it also happens to be a folder with a little program in it that'll let you skip connecting to the internet; this makes it so you don't have to sign up with a Microsoft account and can just use a normal local one instead. And it already comes preinstalled! Here's how you get to it:
Hold Shift + F10, or Shift + Fn + F10 depending on your keyboard.
Click inside the window that pops up, type the following and press enter afterwards to run it: OOBE\BypassNRO
I believe it should restart your computer automatically, but if not then restart your computer or type: shutdown /r /t 0 /f
Now when you're brought back to the setup workflow, the page where you connect to the internet will have a new button on it that lets you say you don't have internet. Clicking that and proceeding through the rest of the setup lets you get around the Microsoft account thing.
Group Policies
You don't have to know much about them, these are just a bunch of specific settings for what your computer can or can't do that lets you decide how it works in different ways.
I'm gonna show you how to turn off the recommendations and internet stuff basically. For now bring up search and type gpedit, pick this
It'll open up to Local Group Policy Editor and we can get started :3c
Start Recommendations
In the side menu, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Click on Settings to sort them with all the "Turn off" ones bumped to the top.
Here's what you should set:
Turn off user tracking: enabled
Turn off feature advertisement balloon notifications: enabled
Remove Recommended section from Start Menu: enabled
Remove Personalized Website Recommendations from the Recommended section in the Start Menu: enabled
Do not search Internet: enabled
Windows Spotlight
Back in the side menu, go down to Windows Components > Cloud Content
Turn off all Windows spotlight features: enabled
Do not use diagnostic data for tailored experiences: enabled
Cortana
In the side menu, this one's back at the top under Computer Configuration. You're gonna want to go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search
Allow Cortana: disabled
Don't search the web or display web results in Search: enabled
News and Interests
In the side menu go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests.
Enable news and interests on the taskbar: disabled
Microsoft Account Login Nudges
When you don't use a Microsoft account they'll nudge you repeatedly to sign in so you can "get the most out of your experience" *gag*. The group policy for turning that off has a note that suggests it might not work with Windows 11 though (implicitly), so you can close the group policy editor window now and for this last one let's just open up the regular settings.
Go to System > Notifications > Additional settings, then uncheck all the boxes. And there ya go! (✿◠‿◠)ノ u are done.
Group policies are kind of a rabbit hole so while there is a lot more you could change or read into, for your own sanity's sake I would advise against it and say call it a day lol
This is all extremely good information, thank you very much for the addition!
I endorse this as an IT technician. I do this to every new Win11 device I set up.
As a bonus, run Chris Titus Tech's debloat tool on it.
Having Fun with Technology
It allows you to add tools, remove/disable shitty parts of windows, and easily change some settings. My default is running the preset for a desktop/laptop and applying security update settings, but there are so many options to customize. I used it on my personal laptop.
What was the last thing you read/watched that made you feel like this? I think for me it's each time I rewatch the Good Place haha
It was @natalieironside 's amazing The Last Girlscout, became my hyper focus a December or two ago. Would highly recommend the supplementary book Lead and Roses too.
