Today I had the spoons to hunt down my neighborhood council's email and send them an email that basically said "I would like to be able to leave my house but my neighborhood is not wheelchair accessible. Who do I talk to in order to get this fixed?" And I am planning on hunting down whoever is in charge of sidewalks in my neighborhood and getting real annoying about it.

My plan is to email them every time I want to go somewhere but can't.

Email 1: hello, please fix sidewalks so I can ride the bus places I am very passionate about public transportation and also being able to leave my house.

Email 200: This morning I woke up and wanted some delicious coffee to start my day, but upon getting out of bed I discovered we were out of coffee. I would've liked to take advantage of the city's public transportation system in order to support a local business like [examples of local coffee shops] but alas I cannot because I am a wheelchair user and my neighborhood is not wheelchair accessible. [Insert rest of arguement RE accessibility]. In conclusion I don't work I can keep these emails coming until I die please just fix my sidewalks.

This is going to be my new spite hobby. I was already mad about the abuse and general shit hand the disabled get dealt in our culture but then I started using a wheelchair and places like doctor's offices have been inaccessible to me so now I am filled with rage. So I am going to take that rage and do something with it. Like emailing my city counsel representatives at 2 am like "I crave a moonlight walk fix my sidewalks please."

After the Americans with Disabilities Act passed in 1990, my grandma - who used an electric wheelchair, having survived both polio and getting hit really hard with post-polio syndrome - made a hobby of filing complaints against businesses that weren't accessible.

She also used to run over people with her chair if they were blocking ramps, but that's neither here nor there.

#As someone who has worked daily with addressing accessibility #please do this if you have the spoons please question people and tell them to do their jobs #bc trust me there are people who want to help you we are listening and gathering up support for what we're trying to do #my tags probably sound reductive and cryptic because I don't want to speak too much about work here #*opens mouth to remind able bodied ppl of the curb-cut effect* AND ANOTHER THING #WHY ARE WE STILL NOT HELPING PEOPLE WHO USE WHEELCHAIRS BY DEFAULT????

Listen to me: You get good at things by being bad at them. You learn by failing. You gain competency and a sense of mastery by failing at something many times and in many interesting ways.

The sooner you are able to laugh at your own failures, to enjoy the process of messing up, the easier life will be. Because you'll no longer be afraid of learning.

And once you're no longer afraid of failing, you can learn anything.

And that's the thing of it, isn't it? Failing and accepting a failure is itself a skill.

And it can be very hard to learn, especially if you come from a family where a failure is a sign that you are a failure instead of a sign that you are learning.

You're going to fail at failing well. There are going to be times when it hurts, times when your brain is telling you that you should just give up and you'll never get it. Times when a failure is going to frustrate you to no end.

And you can still learn to fail well. You can learn to see it as a sign that you're learning, you can learn to give a little chuckle and say to yourself, well, everyone screws up sometimes, I'm just learning.

It is not easy, but it is important.

Hey, friends with poor memory. This is a sign to go ahead and learn anything you want, even if you're afraid you're going to forget it all. Read Wikipedia articles, watch documentaries, take free classes, and delve deep into books and lore. Maybe I'm the only one who has this fear, maybe not. But learning for pleasure is just as much--if not moreso-- about the joy of the experience as it is about memorization.

also! contrary to what we are taught in school, learning is not about memorizing facts - it’s about learning how to think. our brain is a muscle that needs exercise, not a bag for shoving as much random facts into as possible.

#it's a real fear as someone who knows something happened or knows i learned something but theres a blank hole in my mind #it's like having a box of puzzle pieces and you realize a few are missing and then you just keep getting extension boxes #and even when you do find some of the pieces they are just degrading naturally like maybe you spilled water on them and now they dont fit #you can't stop hoping to get more pieces because there are chunks of the puzzle that are beautiful or particularly satisfying #and you might look at some of those pieces and go I hope you stay but you have to reconcile with the fact that any piece you pick up #might get kicked under a couch or accidentally put in the wash or taken outside because you put it in your pocket #but you still kind of have to keep going because you enjoy putting the pieces together and admiring the ones that you've held onto #that's kind of sad and a weird analogy but idk i felt like writing about how memory works for me a lot of the time #u take on a special kind of grief and acceptance and it was nice seeing this post bc sometimes it feels very futile to research or learn #also it's particularly important in my field of work so it's also something I have to be careful about and not be too honest about which #that's a whole other frustration but I still want to get better I still want my career to progress I still want to be useful
