"The best thing we can do with power is give it away" - On the leftist critique of superhero narratives as authoritarian power fantasies:
The ongoing "Jason Todd is a cop" debate has reminded me of a brilliant brief image essay by Joey deVilla. So here it is, images first and the full essay text below:
"A common leftist critique of superhero comics is that they are inherently anti-collectivist, being about small groups of individuals who hold all the power, and the wisdom to wield that power. I don’t disagree with this reading. I don’t think it’s inaccurate. Superheroes are their own ruling class, the concept of the übermensch writ large. But it’s a sterile reading. It examines superhero comics as a cold text, and ignores something that I believe in fundamental, especially to superhero storytelling: the way people engage with text. Not what it says, but how it is read. The average comic reader doesn’t fantasize about being a civilian in a world of superheroes, they fantasize about being a superhero. One could charitably chalk this up to a lust for power, except for one fact… The fantasy is almost always the act of helping people. Helping the vulnerable, with no reward promised in return. Being a century into the genre, we’ve seen countless subversions and deconstructions of the story. But at its core, the superhero myth is about using the gifts you’ve been given to enrich the people around you, never asking for payment, never advancing an ulterior motive. We should (and do) spend time nitpicking these fantasies, examining their unintended consequences, their hypocrisies. But it’s worth acknowledging that the most eduring childhood fantasy of the last hundred years hasn’t been to become rich. Superheroes come from every class (don’t let the MCU fool you). The most enduring fantasy is to become powerful enough to take the weak under your own wing. To give, without needing to take. So yes, the superhero myth, as a text, isn’t collectivist. But that’s not why we keep coming back to it. That’s not why children read it. We keep coming back to it to learn one simple lesson… The best thing we can do with power IS GIVE IT AWAY." - Joey deVilla, 2021 https://www.joeydevilla.com/2021/07/04/happy-independence-day-superhero-style/
Kids don't want to be Batman because he's rich, they want to be him because he's got tons of cool gadgets he invented himself, is a badass martial artist, is a genius on par with Lex Luthor, and uses all this to be on the same level as Superman despite having zero actual superpowers. They see the little boy who lost both his parents, decided nobody else should ever have to live through that, and want to be like that.
Kids don't want to be Superman because he's superior to humans(he isn't, that's always been a core part of his character that he rejects that outlook and it's always just Lex projecting his view of Superman onto Superman himself), they wanna be able to deflect bullets and shoot lasers from their eyes because Superman uses all that to show the best side of humanity, to show how humanity isn't even tied to actually being human but to how you act towards other people.
Leftists are utterly incapable of analyzing anything accurately.

THIS IS LITERALLY LEFTISM. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS EVERY TIME COMMUNISM IS IMPLIMENTED except with less "wisdom" and more violent purges and gulags.
Stop buying Apple products and the world will get better.
Communist utopianism relies on the fairy tale that if you replace the old government with a new one, that new one will magically just fade away and we’ll just be in an anarchist peace state singing kumbaya, instead of the reality that happens every single time where the very same greedy, power hungry tyrants you’re ostensibly meant to get rid of just rise to power and make everyone else’s lives horrible.
When you’re completely dependent on the government, they WILL fuck you over.
Listen:
"Won't Get Fooled Again" is a cornerstone of my political beliefs. I suffer no delusions that the guillotine holds any salvation for mankind. But at the same time, something's absolutely got to give one of these days, right? It's a very strange kind of freedom to allow a very few people to profit incalculably from human suffering. Would-be emperors in generalissimo uniforms, brimming with medals and tassels, are not our only extant breed of tyrant.
And you're typing this on an older phone you bought used, because that's a very easy way to not contribute to the system you say is universally harmful? You don't get to talk about freedom while defending an ideology with a dictator-creation ratio of 100%.
Pay per view?
Seriously

No, I was told it was bad by the numerous historical accounts of mass murder and totalitarian autocracy. It failed, it lost the Cold War, and now Europe is free. Democracy and the will of the people triumphed over one-party dictatorships from Prague to Warsaw. Get over it.
OP was told communism is good by people who never lived under communism.

GLaDOS voice: "Would you like to see some artwork I generated? I've heard from other test subjects that AI-generated artwork produces an uncanny valley response in human viewers because they can't perceive it as fully real. They've told me that it looks absolutely hideous to them, that they can't imagine anything more disgusting than AI art. But, well I've been practicing and wanted your honest opinion. Feel free to let me know how ugly you find this by ranking it on a scale from 'vomit-inducing' to 'eye-bleeding'." A robotic arm lowers from the ceiling holding a hand mirror up to Chell's face
Because it's easier to destroy farm land.
Also because it's harder to siphon money from a government program that's supposed to produce something tangible that most people will expect to see. Kamala can get away with running a broadband internet program that didn't connect a single person to the internet because most of us already have internet, didn't know about the program, and the ones who don't have internet and knew about the program probably know better than to expect anything from programs like this. But if you say "we're going to put solar panels on every parking lot above X size", you kind of have to do at least some of it or a lot of people will wonder what the hell is going on. The whole country isn't like California, where they're happy to spend billions of dollars on a non-existent high speed railway.
Women stick thin and malnourished on the red carpet, and people are saying you can't point out that these women are dying because that's body shaming. Girl.
@whitenikes
Shaming people with such an illness indeed doesn’t help – but what does help is not glamorizing such behavior and not making women feel like they have to starve themselves!
And before someone who guzzles paint says "they're only doing this to meet unrealistic beauty standards set by men!" I have never seen a single man say anything positive about the women who look this way. In fact, it's the exact opposite. There are hundreds of before and after photos of celebrities who did this to themselves and the men all hate it and say they looked much better before.

We're four days into Pride Month and Google's doodles so far have been: - Disco - Nothing - NBA History - Contest winner who submitted a starry sky version of the logo No rainbows. No flags. They didn't even do something like changing the logo to the Pride flag specifically. I know this really started last year but it's great to see it (or not see it). Pride doesn't sell. People are sick of being bullied int ocompliance, and they're taking their money with them. Culture is moving on.
You love to see it.
