"Honor your father and mother" isn't an endorsement of abusive parents, but it also isn't contingent on how we feel. My late father was severely mentally ill, and honoring him was DIFFICULT, to say the least, because we only got occasional glimpses of the kind man he could be. Most of the time, that kind man was held hostage by the inarticulate ragebeast he tended to be by default. You never knew, even in the good times, who you'd be dealing with ten minutes from now. So honoring him meant being ever-conscious of what he had done for us, and showing as much respect as we could for his authority and rightful place in the family, and quickly leaving when he started getting out of control.
"Do not provoke your children to wrath" means, from what I can figure out, "Don't make it difficult or impossible for your kids to honor you. Don't be eager to get angry and find fault. Don't be a hypocrite, and don't fail to provide. Treat your wife/their mother well, especially where they can see it. Be consistent and fair with discipline."

I've told this story before, but when I lived in New York every lawn mowing business hired illegals from south of the border (Mexicans and Guatemalans mostly) and only illegals. We were told constantly that "Americans will never work as lawn mowers" by the left every time immigration came up. When I moved out to Ohio, there are very few, if any, illegals from south of the border, and every single lawn mower job is done by white Americans. They just get paid double what the illegals in New York get paid. There is always someone who will "do those jobs". They just need to be paid for it.
