oh and when i was a year old, after i got my foot amputated my parents were pushing me around in a stroller at a street festival in miami and i was chewing on my foot or whatever and this street performer came up to us and was like βaw i bet that tastes good!!β and my dad was like βyeah look at what she did to the other one!!!!β and pulled back the blanket covering my left leg to show a stump with a huge scar on it and iβm pretty sure my dad terrified that poor man
A friend of ours worked in a movie theater.Β One night, a rowdy little boy decided to kick over all the stands that held up the red velvet cords.
After several attempt to stop him, she finally declared, βIf you keep kicking those over, your leg will fall off!β
No sooner had she said this than she looked up and was mortified to notice a man standing on a pair of crutches with one leg.
Before she could apologize, he looked down at the boy and sighed, βI used to love to kick those.β
The kid ran away.
My small hand looks normal enough that many people donβt notice for quite some time that itβs missing fingers, and I sometimes get people questioning if my hand was always like that but they never noticed, or if something recent happened to them.
So as a kid I absolutely loved when people tentatively asked me what happened to my hand and Iβd unsuspiciously say, βWhat about myββ looking down at them, βnoticeβ the missing fingers, and suddenly scream-recoil away as though Iβd never seen the issue before. Managed to give quite a fright to multiple well-meaning adults about it. βοΈπ
I had a boyfriend once who was born without one of his thumbs. He used to love messing with people when they asked him about it.
βShark attack. He wasnβt very hungry.β
βI used to bite my nails. Well, nail. Singular.β
βTried that optical illusion where you magically tear your thumb in half? Turns out Iβm really bad at it.β
and, his favorite:
βWho has two thumbs and a million dollars? Thβ [goes to point his thumbs at his chest, notices one is missing] β Aw, manβ¦β

if you're having trouble sleeping the best you can do is put a bright object close to your face and look at it for at least 30 minutes. if that doesn't work you can close your eyes but make sure to think really hard about a bunch of bullshit

There's also the additional aspect that if luxuries are what's expensive, you can choose to go without and then you don't have to make so much money. You can choose to work part-time, or seasonally, or one person can provide for a group, if living is cheap and you don't need luxury. But if being alive is expensive, you have no choice but to work a lot, regardless of how frugal your lifestyle is. And then you may as well buy yourself the latest gadget to cheer yourself up after another annoying week at work, because it costs barely anything anyway.
Exactly this. Basic necessities are priced like luxuries.
Everything else is just sugar water.

I cannot emphasize enough how exactly accurate this is to working in production
RULES FOR DATING MY DAUGHTER:
my daughter cannot, through action or inaction, harm a human or allow a human to come to harm
a daughter at rest or in constant motion remains at rest or in constant motion unless acted upon by another force
daughters are never created or destroyed, only transformed
always treat every daughter as loaded, even if you know she isn't
you do not talk about my daughter

Tonight at Contra a heavy storm came down and during the final dance a bolt of lighting struck the block and the entire block lost power. Right as we all stoped, it went dark. The fiddler shouted "SWING YOUR PARTNER!" and maybe a third of the people tried. It was DARK. Slowly people pulled out phones and turned on the flashlights. The caller announced there would be a final waltz lit by the phone flashlights of everyone on the sides. And there was. And then we all worked together to clean up, with twice as many people as usual, to hold the flashlights, but it was still pouring heavy rain. The train station was affected by the power outage, and all the street lights were out. In Philadelphia, for a moment, it was truly dark, in this one block. Since the train was likely a no-go, I found a carpool, but with the storm and the lack of streetlights, it wasn't safe to drive either. He said he'd go sit in another room and wait out the storm. Time passed. Eventually I wandered through the dark old building, like a haunted house, but suddenly, I heard music.
In the other room, a circle of people were making music in the dark, lit by a few candles, and an emergency exit light. There were two guitars, a mandolin, and a flute. They were singing folk songs in three-part harmony. Was this all improptu? I didn't know any of the songs but all of it was beautiful. Somehow everyone else knew. We waited out the rain for another half hour as the dancers all sang together. It felt somehow magical. Where did these instruments come from? Everyone was so talented. The lightning flashed outside. The thunder roared. The people sang. They passed the guitars around. Did everyone here play guitar? And so talented too. Eventually the rain let up, and we went outside in the dark. I remarked that this neighborhood had a lack of streetlights and it was pointed out to be that it did, they were just out. I felt like I was in another state entirely.
On the way back I learned that every Second Thursday simultaneously as the Contra dance in the same building they have a celtic singing circle and that's why everyone knew those songs. But until then, it just felt like some sort of magic had happened at the Contra dance. The kind of things that happen perhaps in a Hallmark movie.
I continue to get confused questions about if I'm new to Contra, or dance another dance style, or am new to Philadelphia. No, no, and no. Just newly returning from a long grad-school then pandemic then health induced break. Tonight someone said "What took you so long? We've been waiting." But I'm making headway. I'm sure eventually everyone will recognize me, haha. Already many dancers are realizing I can handle some complex flourishes and spins. I also didn't really dress up that fancy tonight and it didn't seem to at all affect how I was treated or who asked me to dance. So I clearly don't need makeup at the contra dance. I also showed up halfway through and that was also fine. Yet again in my life Contra is serving a healing function for me. It is a season of reconnection. I'm also confident that if/when COVID begins to spike again, if I resume wearing a mask in that space, I will still be welcomed and asked to dance and there will be people to dance with. This is the space I've been hungry for, I think, and I'm making things work in my life again, and finally I am emerging from my cocoon of injury and feeling more like myself again.
