Non vocab thought on Gormenghast. This is superb and unusual world building.
We are given a glimpse of the outside world and the very small way in which in intersects the world of the keep through a ritualistic art competition. We are not given the reason for the competition, or why the odd reward is so sought after, just that it goes at least as far back as living memory, which is about 80 years. From there we go to the gallery where the winning art is stored, then on to the gallery’s caretaker. Then his unusual visitor, there to relay news that the caretaker isn’t really interested in. Then we follow the caretaker to the kitchen…
It’s like a long single shot scene, where the camera moves smoothly from one point of focus to the next, never settling on anything long but there’s an obvious through line of something connecting it all.
If I had to give you an example for what I’m talking about, I’d suggest some OkGo music videos. Specifically, both versions of This too Shall Pass. That’s the feeling I got reading the first dozen pages.
My favorite take is that Swelter is a pedophile and Prunesquallor who's attracted to exactly the same kid at exactly the same age is ~queer~. Same flavor of people who call Botkin gay after 6484849 descriptions of underage boys.
Crackshipping these characters so hard it makes me look stupid
description so good I almost liked a hate tweet

gormenghast scholars hhave yet to realize the most obvious reading of steerpike: he has pmdd
listening to an audiobook of Titus Groan and the narrator is making some accent choices that I’m too American to fully understand the implications of but fascinate me nonetheless
