βYou never told me how we know each other,β he said, trying to make conversation.
βItβs complicated.β
Complicated? βDo weβ¦ Do you not like me?β
Sam hesitated. He gave Bucky a very long, very sad look. βI like you, Buck.β
Buck. He calls me Buck. There werenβt many people who knew Bucky by that name. And those who did, wellβ¦ Huh. I wonder ifβ
βDo you know Steve? Steve Rogers?β
Sam nodded, slowly. βI did.β
Buckyβs heart sank. Sure, he was in the future, but hearing his best friend referred to in the past tense did not bode well. He had felt so guilty when heβd shipped out. Leaving Steve alone was the last thing he ever wanted to do.
Rubbing his face, Sam grimaced. βLook, man. Iβm not usually β I want to help you. I really do. But thereβs someone I need to talk to right now, and the thought of it makes me want to pull my goddamn hair out. And I know youβve done nothing wrong, but unfortunately your wholeββ he gestured vaguely at Bucky β βthis, isnβt helping. And β Jesus, would you cool it with the eyes?β
βWhat eyes?β said Bucky.
βYour stupid puppy dog eyes, fucking hell, theyβre even worse than usual.β
βUsual,β he repeated. βI usuallyβ¦ make eyes at you?β
Sam nearly choked, his eyebrows shooting towards his hairline. βYou β uh β what? No, no, thatβs not what I meant. At all.β
And Bucky couldnβt fight the smile threatening to show on his face, because how intriguing. Sam Wilson, who was thus far serious and composed and, despite his denial, at least a little angelic, was stumbling over his words. Because of Bucky. And his eyes. He had to admit, it was rather flattering.
Bucky felt a flutter of interest in his chest. This probably wasnβt the time for it, but he felt it nonetheless.
It wasn't the time for flirting, either, but he found himself asking, βWould you like me to make eyes at you?β
Sam opened and closed his mouth, like he didnβt know what to say. And then β amazingly β he smiled. A smile so big, so bright, that Bucky almost forgot where he was and what they were talking about. Samβs eyes crinkled pleasantly, the lines a perfect imperfection, just like the gap between his front teeth.
There was another flutter in Buckyβs chest, more insistent than the last.
βMan, you are justβ¦ You know, Iβve heard stories,β said Sam, shaking his head minutely. βSergeant James Barnes,β he continued, making his voice deep and deliberate, like he was announcing some kind of sports game. βI bet you caused quite a stir, back where youβre from.β
βI do well for myself,β said Bucky, a pleased flush on his cheeks.
