She takes a deep, shaky breath and repeats the entire sentence. "D-does the Major know... you don't f-fuck... you make love?"

The monitor flickers once. A single, sharp pulse of light across the screen. Then the notification appears.

Leon is the first to look up, meeting Claire's eyes across the table.

“This isn't a random group chat,” she says.

Another message appears.

A second one follows.

BUT I KNOW YOU.

The words stare back at them.

His voice is steady again.

Carefully so.

"I'm not a child you can save, Chris."

That makes something hot and ugly flare in Chris's chest.

Anger.

Fear.

Frustration.

He can't tell where one ends and the next begins.

His jaw locks.

His fingers twitch with the irrational urge to bury themselves in that rain-soaked blond hair.

Just so he can...

God.

Just so he can make Leon stop walking away.

"Don't you walk away from me!"
