During the AIDS epidemic, the leather community was oftentimes blamed for the disease, attacked by heterosexual society and even some in the the gay community for their "perverse" sexual acts. Leather daddies and drag queens were often excluded from pride events.

During the AIDS when family, government officials, and even doctors turned away from patients, the leather community stepped up. They spread information on safer sex practices, raised money for research and treatment, and held the hands of dying patients. Many leather men and women participated in and hosted the first pride events.

Kink doesn't just belong at pride. Kink *is* pride. Queer history is messy, complicated, kinky, sexual, despair, hope, love, joy, grief, pain, community.
