Got in a huge fight with my parents, the usual. "Why am I a liberal? Why did I walk away from the church? Why am I agnostic? What are my beliefs and morals?" I need to explain who I am as a person on a regular basis to these people who can't understand why I believe what I believe and why I am the way that I am. Truth is, they'll never be able to know and as sad as it makes me [because ultimately, they just want to get to know me (in their yelly, why aren't you in love with Jesus anymore?, let's argue about politics sort of way)] this is how it must stay. I'm not opening up about the last 13+ years and unleashing havoc. I'm not going to be responsible for my parents inability to be parents when I needed them my whole life. My mom has always been ill (seizures, brain surgery, heart surgery, pacemaker) and my dad has been ill these past few years (heart procedures, shortness of breath, dizziness) and eating himself to death in the process. I've never had healthy parents and I don't blame them for being giving such hardships but I can blame them for overlooking their youngest daughter in the process. I have mentally and emotionally shut down since I was too young. I never understood how to make friends or hold conversation because no one taught me how to have a voice and be someone. I was praised for being silent and going into another room to play with toys instead of interacting with other people. I barely spoke at family functions, I didn't have a core group of friends until middle school,I was a bullied at school and by my cousins, there are many small things that add up. I don't want to accept the responsibility that I should've put myself out there. How does a 5 year old know what that is? My sister was put into soccer, ballet, jazz dance, etc. and I never was given an explanation why. I did try gymnastics as a kid but my mom got hospitalized and was really sick so by the time I went back my body was out of shape and all the people I knew were gone. All the relationships I had finally become comfortable with were gone and I had to start all over but it didn't last very long before I gave up. I was too heavy for the bars, I couldn't run and jump over the hurdle, and I quickly became embarrassed for being the tallest, biggest girl in class. I hate dating because when people ask about my childhood, I don't want to be a negative Nancy but I can't offer much excitement. I went to Egypt when was 8 and that's the only memory, besides playing with my 3 dogs, that I hold dear. I don't remember many happy go lucky moments and I had my childhood taken from me before I had a chance to truly live it. Being sexually abused as a child by your cousin is not exactly conversation material; neither is being manipulated and taken advantage of by your 'friend' ('with benefits') nor being raped by the guy dated after that. Revictimization is a real thing and it took women and gender studies classes in college for me to figure that out. How disgusting is that? My understanding of my value and power as a women in relation to the power dynamic between the sexes came so many years after having been born. I have to spend the rest of my life unlearning sexism, racism, patriarchal supremacy, heteronormative expectations, gender roles, etc. I fucking wish I had a do over button but I will never have a chance at a normal life. This is my normal. This is not normal, this is my secret truth that I carry every day. Imagine knowing someone but not knowing they have been abused. They show some or any of the signs of it: depression, unable to be in relationships easily or at all, substance abuse problems, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, etc. I have all of the aforementioned things and although my parents do not know about some of them, I have asked my parents to put me in therapy but they'd rather me explain myself to them and their angry, biased ways than a professional who can actually help me, who can actually treat me because I probably need to be medicated. I'm so exhausted, I'm afraid I'm going to burst but it's not just my secret to tell. I'm also protecting another victim and if I say anything, I'll be revealing her secret too and we swore we'd take this to the grave but I can't live like this.
