Now that we have the potential for so many distractions, we try to constantly be using some type of distraction in order to stay in the outer self and have it run the show of our lives. Giving ourselves the idea that it is in control, but in truth constantly desiring for the waters to float you to where you most desire.

listen. aging into your thirties rocks. yes your joints get a little creaky. yes you can’t sleep in a pretzel on the floor anymore after a concert or a convention. and you lose some friends. but the thing is that you sort out who your real friends are and you sort out who you really are. and you get to see your friends settling into careers they like, and adopt new dogs and cats, and you find a job you can stand, and get really good at arts and crafts, and maybe that book you loved as a kid gets a movie deal and it doesn’t suck, and you learn to like new food and bake your own bread, and you realize that the great portfolio of self harm scars you all used to curate are going white with age and not updated, and half your friends are a different gender now and so much happier and maybe you are too, and you know who you are, and that it’s a journey and not a revelation. it’s a direction you’re headed, and you’re enjoying the trip.

I see her watching the sunrise a lot. She watches as the dawn slowly brings a new energy into her life and her horizons expand in a golden hue. And again at night when it sets it promises a new day tomorrow, the beauty of the last etched in her soul with warmth.

I see myself laying in a bed of lavender, the color purple surrounds my psyche as intuition pours into me like a waterfall. There is more love here, a garden is ready to grow. I am being gently held by my soul, who is napping. Communing with the light that is overtaking me.

I was younger, it felt so easy to lean into change, and to go through pointless and fun phases with joy. Now I find it a little more difficult to allow my own energy to wander, after painful events change that wasn’t in order to fight a battle or achieve a specific goal seemed unwise. Now as I look back and my scars have healed somewhat, I see some of the joy that those wounds were overshadowing, and I’m feeling like leaning back into being an explorer of joy, not just an achiever of goals.

So this is what its like to get a little bit older.

When I was a teen, I went to a Christian youth group for a while. I was obsessed with musicals, particularly Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. One day, one of the youth group leaders told me that it seemed I loved Cats the musical more than god, and urged me to give it up. Anyway, I decided after our conversation that I really did love musicals more than god, and I never went to church again. So that’s the story of how Cats made me forsake Jesus and turned me into an atheist.
