the worst thing you can do is let this world steal your whimsy. protect your whimsy at all cost. donât let these joyless doofuses steal your magic
The Dolomites, Italy
So this is not something I usually post because it involves something deeply personal about my pregnancy.
In early December we found out that our son is suffering from Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), where his diaphragm didn't full close. He is left with a hole in his diaphragm, allowing the organs in his abdomenal cavity to move into his chest cavity, restricting the growth of his lungs and affecting the positioning of his heart.
So far a portion of his intestines, most of his stomach, and now a portion of his liver is sitting in his chest cavity.
He'll need surgery with in days of birth to move the organs back into his abdomen and repair the diaphragm. He is expected to stay in the nicu a minimum of five weeks but could be up to 3 months or more, depending on his progress during pregnancy and how he responds and heals post surgery.
We hope to stay as much time as possible in the NICU with him during his time their.
And thats why I am posting this link today. Its hard for me to ask others for help, especially financial. It would mean the world to us if you could donate money so we can be there for our son.
Donations would go toward loss salary while staying with our son in the NICU, transportation to and from the hospital, food while staying there. Also the money would go toward things needed when we bring him home from the hospital, like the possibility for oxygen needs, feeding tubes and formula, medication, and other monitoring equipment he may need. Additionally, depending on how his hernia progresses before birth, we may need to relocate out of state and we want to be able to have that option to give him the best care.

If you can not donate, please share. Iâve provided two different fundraising sites:

Sharing this again. Our son actually reherniated, and he had excess air in his abdomen from that , plus had some holes and adhesions on parts of his intestines from when they were entangled up in his chest.
They repaired the hernia again , luckily it was small but they added a biological dissolvable mesh to help cover the area. They had to get rid of part of his intestines from the issue that they saw. His blood pressure has been too low, so they donât think his intestines would properly heal if they attached the pieces of intestines together just yet, so now they are being held outside the body in the meantime.
They told us 6-8 weeks for healing possible then theyâll attached the intestines together.
Itâs a set back for sure.
They had mentioned that before they caught this they were considering starting feedings soon and weaning off more things .
Being able to pay for transportation is our biggest concern right now. Then later any specialty equipment or medication may be needed.
I don't usually donate to or reblog these things, because you never know if they're a scam or not, and I get scammers from all sides multiple times every day. But this one feels real and legitimate. So I kicked in a little and I'm sharing to hopefully help them get a little more help. If they're scammers they did a *very* detailed and specific job of it. But I don't think that's the case.
Wouldn't it be cool if there was a way to be absolutely 100% sure (or nearly - almost nothing is 100%) that these things are legit?
Anyway, donate a little something if you feel it in your heart, consider reblogging to spread the word whether you donate or not, and I wish them the best of luck with their little one.

This is for new foragers, like my coworker:
'Medicinal' does NOT mean 'good for you and safe to eat all the time'. A plant being 'medicinal' does NOT mean that eating it, without any idea of WHY and HOW it's considered medicinal, is a good idea. It is UNWISE to consume a plant that has a long history of use in a way that DOES NOT have a long history of use.
In addition to learning that a plant is edible, you need to learn how it is eaten, what part is eaten, when it's harvested, and how to harvest it sustainably and in a way that supports its continued existence (unless it's invasive). If people only eat the ripe berries as food, then don't eat unripe berries. Don't. Eat. Unripe. Berries. UNLESS! There's! precedent! For that plant!
I know there's this idea going around that Americans only eat sweet or salty things, and that we've eliminated bitter things from our diet, and we should thus be eating more bitter things. But! Bitter things are bitter for a reason, and sometimes that reason is poison! Some of them are medicinally useful at the correct dose, but! You need to know what that is! You need to be doing it on purpose! DO NOT! Assume that bitter means that it's good for you!
The fallen rule of toxicology is : The dose makes the poison.
Eating something as a food is a different dose of it than taking it as a medicine. And even then there may be limits.
The legumes known as cicerchia (Lathyrus sativus) are a great green fertilizer plant and drought resistant in ways that make them some of the last crops to die. They can be really nutritious in limited quantities and were vital to the survival of people in places like Puglia, Italy where the weather and political rule have a history of instability. The umpteenth ruling class conquering your lands as a strategic military point and steal all your food plunging you into an artificial famine are notably less likely to eat your beans with paralyzing neurotoxins.
See, that âlimited quantitiesâ of cicerchia is doing the heavy lifting because the legumes are toxic and they will kill your in horrible, horrible ways if theyâre your main source of protein for too long. Sometimes itâs a gamble between the cicerchia toxins and the starvation so you just take your chances. In good times theyâre apparently quite tasty and can be part of a traditional diet. Because the cultural knowledge of that limit is passed down.
Lima beans are also toxic if not boiled for 30 minutes (U.S. cultivars may be as low as 10 minutes, but itâs safer to not fuck around with it.) A fact you might not be aware of if youâve only had them canned or frozen where theyâre pre-cooked and you can safely do things line microwave then a few minutes. Because someone else in society was doing something you didnât notice to prevent a food safety issue you werenât even aware of. Lima beans are really healthy when prepared correctly and are full of cyanide when raw. Something home gardeners sometimes find out the hard way, especially with all the raw foods health influencers.
Know how to prepare things before you put them in your mouth. Unluckier ancestors than you have already figured this out. Meticulous scientists or other knowledge guardians have figured it out even more precisely. Foraging is older than agriculture and doesnât have the benefit of deliberately breeding out poisons.
Medicine is often just deliberately poisoning yourself in just the right way at just the right amounts to fend off some other issue. Get it wrong and it could injure or kill you whether itâs a plant or refined.
There have been a number of plants and mushrooms that I heard were "edible" - only to later learn that that meant, in some cases, "boil for a while, dump out the water and add fresh, boil, dump, add fresh, boil, and then you can eat them" (though many are just "cook first to break down the toxins". Do your research *fully* before eating something you're not familiar with. Soy beans, like Lima beans, are toxic when fresh and need to be cooked first. Many ignorant people have grown soybeans in their gardens and want to eat them off the plant like sweet peas. Nope. Do your homework first!
med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid đ" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times
"Before surgery, your bodyâs reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If thereâs food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. Thatâs called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you
I have four kids. Iâve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.
This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldnât feed them before those instances.
Iâm not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.
i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.
every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.
not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.
"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!

For then without rhyme or reason
Two birds did rise up to fly
And where the two birds were flying
I swear I saw you and I
I walked out this morning
It was like a veil
Had been removed
From before my eyes
For the first time
I saw the work of Heaven
In the line where the hills
Had been married to the sky
And all around me
Every blade of singing grass
Was calling out Your Name
And that Our Love would always last
And out of the confusion
Where the river meets the sea
Something new would arrive
Something better would arrive
I was brought to my senses
I was blind, but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said You belong to Me
@cryingout-for-you
