I don’t know who needs to hear this, but going to thrift stores and buying all the usable sheets and t-shirts and jeans and then cutting them up to make rag rugs or yarn or whatever for your shabby chic/cottagecore aesthetic isn’t solar punk.
It’s gentrification.
You are taking resources away from people who need them so that you can pretend to live a less consumptive lifestyle. You are cosplaying sustainability.
The whole fucking point of rag rugs etc. was that you made use of textiles you already had that could no longer be used for their intended purpose, and you extended the lifecycle of the item by turning it into something else useful instead of throwing it in the garbage. When you buy clothing that still has use *as clothing* just to cut it into rags to make a rug, you’re *speeding up* the consumption of materials. You’re shortening the lifecycle. You are consuming MORE.
And you’re doing it by buying up resources that marginalized people need. Those thrift store sheets would look so much better on somebody’s fucking bed, but since you wanted that Little House on the Prairie vibe, someone is sleeping on a bare mattress now whilst trying to save their pennies to go to fucking Wal-Mart for bedsheets. And that denim throw pillow probably looks adorable on your sofa, but somebody needed a pair of sturdy jeans for that job they’re trying to get, and now there’s nothing available.
But sure, your house looks cute. I guess that’s important.
If you do want to work with secondhand materials- put a message round to friends. I have a cashmere jumper I got for free because a friend was going to throw it out. Just 20 minutes of knitting some custom elbow patches and sewing them on and I had a jumper for free that would have cost ÂŁ150 new and was headed for the trash.
When I was a teenager my brother saved all his jeans for me and I made them into a quilt- it's got a lot of heft to it so works similarly to a weighted blanket (I didn't know what they were when I made it!).
A friend of my mum is an interior designer. She gives me offcuts.
Get the word out there among friends, in your community, even through things like Craigslist. People hate throwing away a pair of jeans over a crotch hole, or a sheet with a blood stain, or a tablecloth with a cigarette burn.
Estate sales can be an excellent way to get material for super cheap. I got like 10+ yards of a white poly cotton blend (I think! I'm honestly not sure!) for like $10; the original receipt in the bottom of the bag said it was over $50 worth of material purchased like 5 years ago. Also, the piles of fabric I have seen at estate sales is ridiculous.
Also tools! I needed a rotary cutter - I found a brand new one with a mat for $8 - that same one new would have been over $25. I also have a big cutting mat that was only $12 - new, it's over $30

not to be all “tw*light did nothing wrong” but misogyny honest to god killed the hunger games
it was no masterpiece sure but it also sure as hell wasnt the love triangle bullshit everyone made it out to be. seriously everyone blames this whole “YA fiction with the special One and teens overthrowing the oppressive government tropes” trend on the hunger games but the truth is that none of those books are anything like thg
god!!! im mad!! name one cliche YA novel where the government actually is BAD like not just “oh love is illegal” or “they barcode you!!uwu” instead of like. actual slavery and rampant poverty while the rich waste their money on dumb bullshit!! and name one main character who ACTUALLY suffers under the government’s regime!! who actually starves and works and suffers and has genuine REASON to rebel!! thg is the only YA book that had anything to say about wealth disparity and the dehumanization of the poor,, every other YA book uses it as a plot device to put some dumbass romance together or show how “badass” the MC is!! thg is genuinely emotional and the focus of the book isnt katniss’s archery and how cool she is and its NOT gale or fucking peeta bread. and then the marketing for the stupid fucking movies took the WHOLE POINT OF THE BOOK (which is to satirize and critique how women in entertainment have any serious things about them ignored in favor of whatever dress theyre wearing or who they’re dating) and turns that into……….. a fucking love triangle. and then the world forgets it because its just another dumb teen girl series. okay.Â
Me @ myself rn
oh also last thing. the fact that at the end katniss chose to kill Coin (the rebel leader/soon to be newest dictator) instead of just having a plain and simple boring happy ending shows just how different thg is from the YA fiction its compared to. no other book in this genre would have the guts (or even the idea) to put out such a blatant, obvious “the fight against oppression never ends, stay diligent” message and thg is iconic for it and it shows how much thought was actually put into its message. im sorry to susan collins for my 12 yo self for not understanding at the time and thinking it was just bad writing
thanks to everyone adding on about the representation! about finnick’s story and being trafficked! and about peeta and his disability!! and katniss and her indigenous coding and PTSD!! And about how it shows how war n dictatorships always prey on marginalized groups!! and a billion other things!!! that the movies just fucked off n forgot about!!!
Also, like…Katniss’ love triangle with Peeta and Gale was never about the love aspect. She was choosing between war and peace. It wasn’t “oh nooo i have too many boys :(” it was “one of these people represents war and violence and revolt, which is necessary in the world but unsustainable, and one of them represents peace and love and rebuilding, which can tolerate too much but ultimately is the goal.” and it had to be a romantic relationship because she had to be put into a position where choosing one cut her off from the other. katniss choosing peeta was NEVER about choosing the boy she loved most; it was about choosing a future where she counted up good things in the world, where she had children because she was no longer terrified of what their future would look like, where she grew primroses in her garden and started moving on from living her entire life steeped in trauma. gale was important to her because he was ferocious like her; but even he goes further than her, like when he refuses to run away with katniss because he wants to be part of the rebellion.
thg is a war story. peeta and gale both represent another aspect of what happens when the war is over - you can focus on it, enjoy it even, continue to bring it back every time something goes wrong; or you can slow down, rebuild, heal, refuse to glorify the effect it had on society and you personally. choosing one means you cannot have the other. you cannot hold hands and play in the grass with peace and war at the same time: you marry one of them. doing so erases your ability to commit to the other. and katniss’ choice of peeta is significant because she is choosing peace. she is choosing, despite how hard it is and how easy it would be to be bitter and broken and angry, to heal.
YES THAT LAST PART
The Hunger Games is just a good book. Period.
Listen. Listen. No one is ever going to be a better Bob Cratchit than Kermit the Frog.
no one is ever going to be a better Scrooge than Michael Caine, who treats the Muppets with all the respect they deserve as renowned veteran actors
According to a blip in the IMDB trivia section, Michael Caine told Brian Henson that he was going to play this as if he were in the Royal Shakespeare company. He was going to be the ultimate “straight” man in the world of puppets, running gags and humor.Â
“Before production began, Sir Michael Caine told Brian Henson, “I’m going to play this movie like I’m working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role, and there are no puppets around me.” Henson replied “Yes, bang on!“” IMDb.com Trivia section
tis the season for this post to make the rounds again i guess
I hope that “between the crematorium and the dildo store” becomes a famous saying for whenever a person has lost in the most pathetic and undignified way possible. Sort of like how we still use the phrase “crossing the Rubicon” two thousand years after the event.Â

Nothing like absolutely vIBING with people who lived 102 years ago
[Image ID: A snippet of a newspaper article. It reads as follows:
These flu masks are really a fine thing. For the homely person, they are a regular godsend, and for the handsome ones, they give that added touch of mystery that is so appealing to the average person.
End ID.]
I will honestly never forgive y’all for going crazy over kylo ren. like u literally had poe and finn and u chose kylo. that’s like saying u would fuck jar jar binks over anakin or obi. rip to ur taste in men but I am different
YES GOD FINALLY.
this is in france, but hopefully this’ll slowly mean fewer creepy abusive parents making their kids childhoods into Content:tm:.Â
another important thing mentioned in this article:
This is an essential part of emerging tech rights, esp for young influencers and media users. Kate Eichhorn recently wrote a fantastic book abt this called The End of Forgetting: Growing Up with Social Media that explores the ways permanent records of childhood — particularly representations the children themselves may not be in control of, such as the children of mommy-bloggers or influencers used for clout — can have lasting influences on how we mature in a digital society
Most people over 20 or so have grown up on an internet with natural growth cycles; certain forums and MMORPGs die over time, and our Yahoo sites and Club Penguin accounts die with them. But the centralization of social media platforms, data monopolies compiling detailed profiles on both creators and their audiences, and the incentivizing industry of younger and younger influencers (this article mentions a 6 year old girl making $18M), will make it harder for younger generations to control their digital selves. Hopefully other countries will also realize that virtual autonomy is an important civil right, and a necessary protection for our children

hey give birds antlers
But what if they get stuck in the trees
alright but they could also use it as camouflage and blend in with the tree
What if they landed on each other’s antlers
stack em
@wishem
i keep presenting you with cursed concepts and you keep drawing them in friendly, pleasant ways, this is blasphemyÂ
Imagine if you picked one up from its antlers, like some birb-on-a-stick
Utterly fantastic
Birds with antlers you say? Have a class doodle
the ones on top are its babies
Here’s some art by Munwie on Deviantart:
Meanwhile, this is an obvious reason why Viking helmets didn’t have horns.
Going into battle wearing handlebars for the opponent to play with is a Bad Idea. That didn’t stop other cultures (Indo-Persian, Japanese) from doing so, but Vikings? NO.
The origin of the Nordic Horned Helmet is actually known: they first appeared in C.E. Doepler’s costume designs for Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” operas.
In 1876.
Incidentally, calling mail armour “chain-mail” first happened in the novel “The Fortunes of Nigel” by Sir Walter Scott.
In 1822.
Something similar has happened with the word “longsword”, which only came into general HEMA use for what had previously been “hand-and-a-half” or “bastard” swords about 20 years ago; even then the first time I saw it (in “Medieval Swordsmanship” © 1998 by John Clements) it was two words with a hyphen: “long-sword”.
As a single word it’s been part of the fantasy fiction arsenal since the mid-1970s, for example in C.J. Cherryh’s “Gate of Ivrel” © 1977, I used it in “The Horse Lord” © 1983, and I’m sure a search through very early D&D manual could place it even earlier.
Longsword is certainly a handier term than the alternatives, but IIRC even “hand-and-a-half sword” is no older than Victorian. In the Middle Ages a sword was usually just “a sword”; it was very inconsiderate of them not to think of later generations who might like to label things with a bit more exactitude…
Not all Munwie’s Deviantart birds are corvids, and not all are sinister…
…though you might have second thoughts about that if you know anything about the lifestyle of the European Robin.
They’re ferociously territorial, their usual song translates as “Get Off My Lawn Or I Will Kill You With Death”, and we’re grateful the two pairs in our garden are the size they are and not as big as e.g. tyrannosaur turkeys.
Which having written it is a mental image I really didn’t need…

even the effing pigeon is more responsible than a lot of people out there.
that's an eagle...
Im going ballistic thats a fucking seagull.
It's good to see a seagull who has turned away from a life of crime and who decided to buy his sandwiches like a responsible citizen instead of stealing them.
