recently finished cyberpunk. it's become one of my favorite rpg games.
sub this dom that. what if they are both completely chained to their devotion to each other. theyβre rendered powerless by it. nobody is driving the bus.
Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Hereβs what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didnβt want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasnβt allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasnβt even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didnβt help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmesβs blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the βrightβ answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. Itβs not about truth when itβs about paying rent. Thereβs no scientific integrity if you canβt control for human desperation.
!!! i have a science story like this (good ending?)
you might be aware of the gene OR6A2 which, when expressed, makes βthe aldehyde part of cilantroβ taste like soap. thereβs another one associated with broccoli. hereβs a 2008 NPR article on the subject. we were very aware of it in high school Introduction to Biotechnology bc our teacher got us little test strips with one of those specific chemicals on them, and yep,
some students said soap, some students said nope.
no penalty for either side, obviously, bc the point was to be precise about your answer because we were about to test our own DNA (AWESOME) for the presence of one of the markers that controls soaptaste.
this was going to be awesome.
we had all learned muchly about DNA structure and gel electrophoresis and things and this was the big application step: hypothesize about your family members, yourself, and learn something about your internal code!!! cool!!!!!
so, to do gel electrophoresis, you need to put the whole setup in a warm bath with this protein which snips apart the DNA in specific places. DNA is magnetic, and the strands of different lengths are dragged with magnetic fields through the gel, with longer pieces being dragged more-strongly (which translates to distance traveled in the gel).
the company who gave our school the proteins fucked them up.
everyoneβs results were ruined.
the whole class, indiscriminately.
so wha happened ?
teacher was honest with us, fast: turns out the only way you can know the protein supply broke for sure on tight school time is to test it on all the students :( sorry guys. so, this was an incredible opportunity to teach us the following science concept:
you can finish your report if part of the process broke.
she had us describe exactly what we saw (sad busted gels) and carefully write in our lab notebooks what we expected and what must have gone wrong and why. there were control bands that no one saw because the snipping didnβt occur, which means β¦ this.
and then it was over. students got points just like normal, for writing out the process thoroughly.
you gotta understand how pissed i was that i couldnβt know my resultsβthis was the coolest shit in our schedule, using our own DNAβbut now iβm realizing the sense of safety i was gifted in that class. that was a good teacher, being honest about the circumstances, thinking on her feet, and teaching us how to own a failure. thatβs some life knowledge. thatβs some SCIENCE.

i really liked shaking the micropipettes. they have this perfect weight distribution for shakey shakey shakey by the wrist.
yeah, intro biotech ruled.
i hate to keep tapping the sign that bad things dont happen to characters the authors hate.
if an author hates a character they are fridged or removed from the narrative. when an author loves a character they are put through unimaginable horrors.

Bosses and Coworkers: you've got a great work ethic, going above and beyond
Me: I am literally just doing my job. Everyone else is slacking off.
Everyone Else: (magically knows somehow the secret amounts of work the boss is actually asking of them, which the boss cannot tell anyone for Reasons)
There always seems to be a gap in instructions (from bosses, parents, teachers, friends, whoever) between 'required' and 'expected', and this gap is:
invisible
never explained
always a different size
you have to guess the size
if you guess wrong you either get Praised or In Trouble
At least on 'the price is right' you know (because someone *actually told you*) that you are playing a guessing game and that there is an over/under mechanic and that the conquence of guessing wrong isn't a punishment or damaged relationship or getting fired
On an unrelated note my psychiatrist has given me a referal for a formal ASD evaluation
This post is about the neurodivergent frustration of having to deal with neurotypical authority figures who don't say what they mean but I love the pro-union labor-rights energy I'm seeing in the notes
you're not supposed to wander around appalachia at night bc you'll fall off a sheer drop that you couldn't see coming. this is also a major risk during the day. you really have to watch out for the sheer drops that you don't see coming due to the undergrowth. I suspect 100% of spooky missing persons cases in appalachia have the spooky explanation of "sheer drop disguised by undergrowth"
really cannot overstate how many utterly invisible ravines we got here and also how big the woods are. they can't find people because the woods? are big
in seriousness you can learn about the isolated Appalachian communities that were up here until quite recently by checking out the foxfire books. it is true that there were many isolated communities that remained pretty separate from mainstream American life for a longish time but most of the last ones were my grandpa's generation. and they were regular? can't overstate how regular they were. just rural and isolated with their own culture. do check out the foxfire museum if you want to learn more about them and their lives! those books are based on real interviews conducted by local high schoolers and college students of the old folks in their communities and they are very interesting windows into day to day rural life up in the mountains in the early to mid 20th century.
I absolutely 100% do not mean this in a like derogatory city slickers way; I myself grew up mostly in a city and I think that it is morally neutral to not have experience with The Outdoors. having said that, I have noticed that a lot of people who do not have regular interactions with "landscape that can kill you" do seem to have an internalized idea that "landscape that can kill you" is something that only happens to other people, or not very often, or only under extreme circumstances. which I think often leads them to assume that there must be something else out here that can kill you. but I fear I must inform the people who wanna believe scary Appalachian woods monsters are real that it's Landscape. inclusive of the beasts that dwell there such as the cougars and bears. its Landscape! (GRASPING EVERYONE ON THE SPOOKY APPALACHIAN TRAIL SUBREDDITS) IT'S LANDSCAPE THAT KILLS YOU! ITS ALWAYS LANDSCAPE! Old Man Hidden Ravine and his best friend Exposure!

I hate that certain types of reality tv are entertaining to me. Turns out I'm a human who finds the same kind of bullshit compelling as other humans. I'll be ike "ha, I would never watch The Bachelor or Love At First Sight, they hold no interest to me" but that's just because I don't care about romantic relationships. Give me a show about revamping failing restaurants and I'm hooked. I've spent the last 3 days watching a guy help people in debt budget and learned nothing because the show is not about accounting, it's about a fed up man swearing at people for booking too many Disney trips. This is trash and I'm watching hours of it. I Am Not Immune.
Me: I should enjoy something with depth
Media: We put some petty drama in front of a camera and exaggerated the mistakes of strangers so you can be amazed at their behaviour

so strange when people assume 'waking up early' means increased productivity bc no??? im awake so i can read fanfic in bed before breakdown breakfast
who on earth is out there waking up early to get shit done??? the purpose of waking up early is to have QUIET TIME LOUNGING IN BED before the world gets LOUD & ANNOYING AS FUCK
