Bloober Team announces psychological thriller Star Trek: Shadow Frontier for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC - Gematsu
Publisher Paramount Games Studio and developer Bloober Team have announced Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a science-fiction psychological thriller. It will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC via Steam in 2027.
“We’ve long admired the way Bloober Team crafts deeply immersive, atmospheric experiences that keep players on the edge of their seats,” said Paramount Games Studio senior vice president and head of creative and production Shawn Kittelsen in a press release. “For Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, it was essential to partner with a studio that could both honor that legacy and push it forward. We have full confidence in Bloober’s ability to deliver a game that does justice to the Star Trek name while bringing something bold and new to the beloved franchise.”
Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno added, “We’ve been waiting a long time to finally share what we’ve been working on. As lifelong fans of science-fiction, Star Trek has always held a special place in our hearts. By combining that passion with what we do best, horror, we’ve partnered with Paramount to create something truly unique: a new adventure set in a beloved universe, enriched with our own signature layer of dark, psychological thriller. We’re genuinely excited about this journey, and our hope is to honor the legacy of Star Trek in a way that feels both respectful yet refreshingly different.”
Here is an overview of the game, via Bloober Team:
About
Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is a story-driven, action-adventure set in the expansive Star Trek universe. Step into the fractured mind of former Lieutenant Ro Laren (voiced by Michelle Forbes) as she seeks to rescue an old friend by embarking on a harrowing journey of survival and self-discovery.
Explore: A Trek Into the Unknown
Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is a mature, story-driven, 3rd person action-adventure set in the expansive Star Trek universe. After crashing onto a distant planet overtaken by a strange consciousness, Ro Laren must survive in an environment that is as breathtaking as it is lethal. In true Star Trek fashion, Ro’s mission is driven by duty and purpose. But here, discovery comes at a terrible cost. The more she uncovers, the deeper she is pulled into a corrupted labyrinth where her memories twist and the planet threatens to sever her connection to reality. Only by solving the mysteries of this strange world can Ro hope to make peace with the demons of her past, boldly going into the heart of darkness like never before.
Investigate: The Lethal Planet
A planet-wide entity has overtaken the landscape… and weaponizes it. Creatures spawned within this environment patrol the lands and strike without warning, forcing Ro into desperate fights and narrow escapes. Each encounter will test your resolve as much as your skill. You’ll need to stay alert, pay attention to your surroundings and choose whether to engage in combat or outmaneuver your enemies.
Survive: Fear Takes on Many Forms
The hostile ecosystem poses a constant threat to Ro’s existence. It seeks to absorb Ro’s consciousness, burrowing deep into her mind and plaguing her with haunting visions. Environmental hazards and obstacles lurk around every corner. Exploration is both your only path to salvation and your potential undoing. Make full use of iconic Star Trek technology to gain an advantage: use your Tricorder to scan and analyze items and rely on your trusty Phaser to solve puzzles and fend off enemies.
Star Trek Like You’ve Never Seen It Before
Star Trek: Shadow Frontier charts a bold new course for Star Trek: a mature, psychological action-adventure that honors the franchise’s core values of curiosity and courage. Venture with Ro Laren beyond the edge of charted space… and beyond the limits of sanity. Balanced and varied gameplay blends exploration, puzzles, combat and cinematic set-pieces into a gripping, story-driven adventure that rewards patience, observation, and smart decision-making.
Explore. Investigate. Survive.

Ever think about how a modern Trek show even had a Tellarite main character and another Tellarite on the main bridge crew of the show and after 40 episodes we learned maybe 2 things about Tellarites

"avoid contact with Janeway"
You know, Braxton and the Borg Queen should get together to host a tea/dinner and invite all the other DQ aliens that loath Janeway just so they can have a therapy session on their extreme issues with Janeway. I can't stop laughing every time this show has one of her enemies use her name like it's a curse.
Archer's enemies end up allies.
Pike's enemies ... I actually can't think of any besides Gorn and I wouldn't count that.
Kirk's enemies go from "want to destroy you and your ship" to "guess we are allies now" (least for Klingons Romulans just slunk away)
Picard ... That's a trauma bowl of enemy soup. Man got tortured repeatedly but even his enemies say his name with respect all "ah yes the captain of the flagship, we are honored" toned
Sisko meanwhile has the "I am more religiously important" enemies that bend to him and then the "we admire your tactics and look forward to fighting against you" enemies (the Dominion did weirdly enjoy it)
But Janeway .... Nah she makes an enemy and it becomes a curse upon her name and wanting to destroy her but also like you get that special dose of "I don't want to fight her though" terror all while going into the fight.
Like, Kirk is nearly similar in how some say his name but that level of hatred/cursed name isn't within the tone. Saying Enterprise over the various series actually tends to get it more than the ships actual Captain in fact (which is a whole other thing because Voyager gets to that level in the DQ as well). I just love that in the DQ it's not just the ship itself but the Captain. To the DQ the two are one and the same. I think Prodigy really could have played on this too.
As a Greek, in response to the current controversy about Matt Damon being cast as Odysseus, I'd just like to share that one of the moments that changed my brain chemistry as a kid was reading a novelized version of the Odyssey and coming across the following description of Odysseus when Circe sees him for the first time and thinks he's hot: "his hair curled like a clematis and his eyes were very brown".
So may I present my own casting choice for Odysseus:
Excuse me???
you are right and you should say it.
Is this the face of a man who would put his own infant in front of a plow to avoid going to war?
Absolutely not
You know who would try that shit?
Is this the face of a man who would defy the very gods to get home to his wife?
You know who would defy the gods just to show he could get away with it?
The last thing Penelope's suitors ever see:
Look, it's simple. If a person has to actively work to make money, they're not "the rich" and they're not the problem. A surgeon making $200k a year still stops making money if they stop showing up to do surgery, because they're still selling their labor. The radical discrepancies in how we value different skills are certainly a problem, but the guy who makes money when he doesn't even get out of bed is the one making money on the value of other people's labor.
Time for my favorite chart!
Notice billions ain't even on there. Outliers something something.
you just let Penny draw on the walls? Just like draw whatever she wants on the WALLS!?
Yeah my dude, it's her play room she's allowed to play in it ya know? Made a deal that she can draw where she wants in the play room, but she can't anywhere else in the house and she's always respected that deal, never had to like clean up marker or anything off walls in the common areas
Also they're just walls. If she decides she wants to start over I got a bucket of paint with her a me on it!
This is excellent parenting, imo. When I was a teen my parents let me draw on my walls and it was a fantastic creative outlet. Nothing paint couldn’t cover later. Now as an adult I enjoy adorning my living space with hand painted details
Yeah exactly!!! My mom painted my childhood bedroom all black and then got me a bunch of metallic and glow in the dark paint pens and invited my friends over and that was a birthday party one year just drawing on my walls it was so fun and now when we go home to visit for like the holidays, my husband and I still sleep in that room and we point out all the stupid stuff we wrote on the walls when we were in you know, 10th grade 😂😂😂
oh my god, ofc Husband was one of the friends.
do you guys have any favorites or anything that stands out?
I really love the drawing he did of the monster from Pans Labyrinthwith the little speech bubble that says "My Gwapes" 😂😭😂

Well put. (Source: Writing About Writing Facebook page)
as a lawyer who’s been practicing for six years now I can say with certainty that this 100% applies to lawyers
Me: My writing is so bad. :(
Meanwhile at Disney: Somehow, Palpatine has returned.
Well, you know, some bathroom graffiti offers insight.
Red marker handwriting on a bathroom wall. Text reads:
“Boss made a dollar Granddad made a dime But that was a poem From a simpler time.
Boss made a thousand Gave pa a cent But that penny paid the mortgage Or at least it paid the rent
Now Boss makes a million And gives us jack Smugly blames the workers For the labor that he lacks.”
And the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls.
