The ouroboros of doing nothing by halves.
Consume and be consumed in endless cycles.
Guilty as charged of Nerdery in the following counts: Sciences (primarily biochemistry). Media (currently serving a sentence for BSD - there will be LN spoilers). TTRPGs (and LARPs).
I am allergic to the queue function.
Sorry.

I am Iris (she/her, 18+) and I have been informed it might be useful to have a pinned post that is not over two years old and just about a specific AU. So, here we are!
This blog is made up of everything I adore. While I have great respect for people who make side blogs for their interests, I don't have the energy for that. So you will be getting a wild mix (mostly BSD at the time of writing).
My ask box is always open, and I accept writing prompts when I reblog #prompt lists and say so (just be aware that it might take me a bit to get to them).
Aside from fandom tags, which I'll put below the cut because they are plentiful, some of the recurring tags you'll find are:
#iris answers - for answered asks. Usually the next tag is the asker, if you're looking for someone specific.
#woven threads - a collection of answers for asks I sent other people
#iris' late night ramblings - personal talk tag. (The 'late night' part is anecdotal. These can happen at any time of day.)
#iris writes fic - fic writing on Tumblr and the occasional AO3 update. Note that most of my bsd fic is currently only on Tumblr.
#iris has fun with nendos and #nuiventures - photos of my nendos and nuis, of which I have too many. It's a problem. Unfortunately, they are very cute.
#lemon - nsfw tag. Mute this if you don't want to see that sort of thing.
I think those are the most important? I guess I can also put my AO3 here, in case someone wants to take a gander.
Fandom-agnostic tags
#bladed ones - tag for swords and other bladed weapons
#burning bright - for the pyromanticism, the warmth of the fire
#devotion tag - for knights, princes, and all other sorts of devoted characters. Rarely also #knightposting
#good tropes - tropes that I enjoy
#leyendecker strikes again - I really like this guy's art
#red thread spotted - posts about the red thread of fate, in art or writing
#science doing science things - for the most science-y posts I can find
#the siren song of the sea - for the marvels of the endless blue oceans that reel me in
#the spider lilies are at it again - they haunt me
#time loop time loop time loop - I like time loops. Who knew.
#vampires - I like vampires. There's a tag if you too like vampires.
Fandom tags, aka stuff you will find on my blog, alphabetically:
#ace attorney
#bsd - Bungou Stray Dog, and its subtags:
#skk (usually), sometimes #soukoku - ship tag for Dazai Osamu and Nakahara Chuuya
#bsd [character or group], e.g.: #bsd dazai, #bsd chuuya, #bsd the flags, #bsd hunting dogs - character and group tags
#bsd spoilers and #bsd manga spoilers - spoilers for recent developments. Mute these if you don't want to see that sort of thing.
#bsd mayoi - tag for the (dying?) mobile gacha game BSD Tales of the Lost. 'Mayoi' is just cuter than 'totl'.
#iris reads bsd and #iris watches bsd - my tags for experiencing the light novels, manga and anime, occasionally live blogged as I went through them.
Special tags:
#our bandaged snow white who just wants to rest - Dazai tag for when he's particularly princess.
#bugzai - Dazai tag for. The opposite of the previous tag? Particularly mafia era Dazai.
#Oda's guardian devil - Beastzai tag
#our ride or die prince - Chuuya tag for when he's particularly chivalrous. Or on a motorbike. Or down to ride or die.
#it's always Mori posting hours - it is an unfortunate reality that I like the guy, and have thoughts about him. Therefore, he gets a tag.
#port mafia misadventures - usually lighthearted or silly takes about the behind the scenes we don't get to see for the mafia
#beast is the gift that keeps on giving (pain) - I feel like the name really already explains it but. This is my tag for painful beast things. Of which there are many. Tread carefully.
Further ship tags you might find:
#kunikidazai - ship tag for Kunikida and Dazai
#fukumori - ship tag for Fukuzawa and Mori
#shin skk - ship tag for Atsushi and Akutagawa
#dcmk - Detective Conan and Magic Kaito, and its subtags
#akam - shorthand for all ships between iterations of Akai Shuuichi and Furuya Rei. I will occasionally additionally tag specific variants such as #okiamu or #raibabo if they are relevant, but akam is the primary catch-all.
#obligatory akam tag - for stuff that isn't technically writing or art etc of them, but that reminds me of them
#obligatory Rei tag and #obligatory Akai tag - similar to the equivalent akam tag, not technically about the characters, but about the characters. In my heart of hearts.
#whiskey trio - I use this tag both for the ship of Scotch, Bourbon, and Rye, as well as for them platonically. Only thing that matters is that the three of them are there.
Other ship tags you might find:
#hakukai - Hakuba and Kaito
#heishin - Heiji and Shinichi
#kaishin - Kaito and Shinichi
#nagano trio - Koumei, Yui, and Kansuke
#yamahiro - Ship tag for the childhood friends Yamamura Misao and Morofushi Hiromitsu, which Aoyama deprived us of.
#dgs - The Great Ace Attorney
#disco elysium
#dr - Danganronpa
#fma - Fullmetal Alchemist (all iterations)
#ghost trick and #ghost trick spoilers - go play Ghost Trick now
#ygo (Yu-Gi-Oh!, any) and #ygotas (Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series)
#zero escape and its subtags:
#c team OT3
#junepei

Dividers by @cafekitsune btw :)
I probably forgot some things, but this should be a decent introduction? I'll update things as they become relevant.

luv how male animals gotta fucking dance around and cry and shit for female attention and sex. and then men irl complain about fat women and body hair like get on ur fucking knees and beg me actually
Alpha males: "This is nature. You don't see animals acting like queers don't you?"
90% of nature documentaries: "Until now the female has been very impressed by the males drag performance of Orwell's Homage To Catalonia, soundtracked exclusively by Maria Carey songs. A demanding performance like that knows to impress. But... Oh No... One note in the final tune was one cent flat. It doesn't look good for the male now. She is ordering an orbital laser strike to burn his beautifully groomed plumage from space. It will take all year to regrow, effectively ending this one's mating season early. Better luck next time, little guy. Women are a tough audience."

I have seen a young lady with her table loaded with volumes loaded of fictitious trash, poring day after day and night after night over highly wrought scenes and skillfully portrayed pictures of romance, until her cheeks grew pale, her eyes became wild and reckless, and her mind wandered and was lost — the light of intelligence passed behind a cloud, and her soul was forever benighted. She was insane, incurably insane from reading novels.

‘While bats can only sense the outer shapes and textures of their targets, dolphins can peer inside theirs. If a dolphin echolocates on you, it will perceive your lungs and your skeleton. It can likely sense shrapnel in war veterans and fetuses in pregnant women. It can pick out the air-filled swim bladders that allow fish, their main prey, to control their buoyancy.
It can almost certainly tell different species apart based on the shape of those air bladders. And it can tell if a fish has something weird inside it, like a metal hook. In Hawaii, false killer whales often pluck tuna off fishing lines, and “they’ll know where the hook is inside that fish,” Aude Pacini, who studies these animals, tells me. “They can ‘see’ things that you and I would never consider unless we had an X-ray machine or an MRI scanner.”
This penetrating perception is so unusual that scientists have barely begun to consider its implications. The beaked whales, for example, are odontocetes that look dolphin-esque on the outside—but on the inside, their skulls bear a strange assortment of crests, ridges, and bumps, many of which are only found in males.
Pavel Gol’din has suggested that these structures might be the equivalent of deer antlers—showy ornaments that are used to attract mates. Such ornaments would normally protrude from the body in a visible and conspicuous way, but that’s unnecessary for animals that are living medical scanners.’
Cetacean echolocation is one of those things that boggles your mind once you really start to think about the implications. They can see each others' hearts beating fast with fear or excitement. They can see if another dolphin is healthy, or pregnant; how the fetus is doing; if they have ingested debris. Their echolocation is also incredibly precise: a bottlenose dolphin could discriminate between cilinders differing in wall thickness by just 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) from 8 meters away!! And they certainly notice when something is off.
I'm not sure if I ever shared this story before here, but in Curacao, when I was allowed to assist in a guest interaction programme, there was suddenly consternation in the pool behind us. A guest had entered the water and the dolphins were going crazy, paying no heed to the trainers anymore. The lead trainer that was with me gave the dolphins to me to watch over while she went to help. When she came back she told me what had happened. The guest that had caused so much uproar had left the water again and was asked if he had done anything to upset the dolphins. He hadn't, and he couldn't imagine what was wrong... until he mentioned he had a pacemaker. The younger dolphins in the pool had never seen someone with a pacemaker before and apparently it rocked their world.
It was such a wild experience, and offered such a cool insight into how dolphins experience their world. I'll never forget it.

"I wrote a eulogy for my best friend last week. Then I read it to him. At the pub. On a Tuesday."
He was alive, holding a pint, looking at me like I'd lost my mind. Maybe I have.
I'm Mick. I'm 70. The man across the table was Barry. Seventy-two. Best mate for 46 years. Met on a building site in 1979. He dropped a plank on my foot. I called him something unrepeatable. He bought me a pint after the shift. Haven't gone a week without talking since.
Three months ago we went to a funeral. Bloke we'd worked with. Cancer. The eulogies were beautiful - people saying what he meant to them, things they'd clearly never said to his face. And all I could think was, he can't hear any of this.
Every beautiful sentence. Every "he changed my life." Said to a room of crying people and a box of wood.
I turned to Barry. Whispered, "What a waste."
Drove home. Couldn't sleep. Because I realised, if Barry died tomorrow, I'd stand up and say extraordinary things about this man. Things I've never said in 46 years. And he'd be in the box, missing all of it.
So I wrote them down. Took a week. Harder than expected - not finding the words, but admitting I had them.
Rang him. "Tuesday. The Crown. Need to read you something."
"Have you joined a book club?"
"Just come."
Same corner table. Pint of bitter. Crisps. I pulled out the paper. He saw my hands shake.
"Mick. What's this?"
"Your eulogy. I'm reading it now because I'm not wasting it on a day you can't hear it."
"Have you gone mad?"
"Probably. Shut up and listen."
I read it. In a pub. To a man very much alive and very much uncomfortable.
I told him about the plank and how it was the best injury of my life. About the night he drove forty minutes in rain to help change a tyre. About how he rang every day for three months after my divorce and never once asked "Are you alright?" - just talked about football and weather, because he knew I didn't need a question. I needed a voice.
I told him he was the funniest man I'd ever known and his jokes were terrible and both things were true. That he'd been a better father than he thinks. That his wife's a saint and he knows it. That I'd have been a worse man without him.
He didn't look at me. Stared at his pint. Jaw tight. Doing that thing men do when the feelings arrive and they'd rather swallow glass than show it.
When I finished, long silence. Then he picked up his pint, took a sip, and said,
"You're paying for the next round. And the one after."
That was his answer. Perfect. Because Barry doesn't say "I love you too." He says "you're buying."
But in the car park, he hugged me. Not the quick back-pat. A real one. Thirty seconds. Neither let go first.
And he said quietly into my shoulder, "Don't read that again at the real one. I want new material."
Who would you write a eulogy for - while they're still here?
Don't wait. The flowers can't hear. The box doesn't laugh. Say it now. At the pub. Over a bad cup of tea. You'll feel ridiculous.
They'll look uncomfortable. It'll be the most important thing you've ever done.
Read them the speech while they can still hug you in the car park.”
