What I like about dazatsu... *Cracks knuckles* I'm glad you asked.
I really like... The toxic potential of them. I know, I'm sorry (ᵕ—ᴗ—) But I really like my yaoi when it's all red flags and nothing you would recommend in real life ( ╥ ᴗ ╥) I think there can be a sweet, healthy way to see dazatsu that is perfectly consistent with canon, and I'm sure that's amazing dazatsu content too!!! But it's not really the dazatsu I'm going to talk about here.
I really love the potential codependency, I really like the fluctuating power unbalance. I like the idea of both of them seeing the other as their saviour, and thus growing attached/dependent on each other. Dazai is Atsushi's guide, the person Atsushi looks up to and admires. He's the first person Atsushi met after escaping the orphanage, and I think Atsushi never looked anyone else the same way– Atsushi's life has a pre-Dazai and a post-Dazai in it, and I can't help but believe that made Atsushi develop a deeeeepp attachment to Dazai unlike anyone else he met after. Dazai also enhances and supports Atsushi both in words and actions, so I think it's very realistic to think Atsushi would develop feelings for him.
On the other side, I LOVE the idea of Atsushi being some kind of addiction for Dazai. Dazai is so bad at living, he scrambles after a reason he can never seem to grab with his hands, his only guide being Oda's last words inciting him to do good– but Dazai doesn't know how, he's never done it before, he arguably doubts he can do good at all, doubts that he's made for it. And in the midst of feeling lost and hopeless, he meets someone who's the embodiment of “Wow, Dazai-san, you're so cool and smart and good. You're so good at everything you do. You're so good for this city. You're such a good mentor. You're so good.” Like I can't stretch how meaningful it is that Atsushi's sincere, unfaltering trust in Dazai's ability to do good is everything Dazai ever needs, and Dazai is unable to have a healthy relationship with anything right? So of course he'd develop an unhealthy addiction to it, at least that's how I (like to) see it! This post, this is everything dazatsu is about– Atsushi's genuine believing in Dazai's goodness with no hesitation, even where no one else does, even when Dazai himself doesn't see that goodness. And let's not forget that Oda explicitly told Dazai to “protect the orphaned”, and being an orphan is a distinctive trait of Atsushi. The “look at me Odasaku I'm doing so good at saving orphans” jokes are hilarious, but I also think they're true: for Dazai, Atsushi's very being embodies fulfilling his best-friend-slash-lover's last wish. And isn't that like being constantly high for Dazai?
I think this way they see each other opens for some veryyyy interesting dynamics. Dazai is Atsushi's mentor, but Atsushi kinda seems like having the upper hand in the end? But in a way that is intimate and deeply rooted; a kind of power unbalance that isn't apparent to anyone but Dazai, and maybe vaguely to Atsushi on a very instinctive level.
I like their dynamics and interactions, I like how they evidently seek each other and enjoy being together, which is a a sentiment that very clearly goes both ways– and I love stretching and pulling this “liking being with each other” till it reaches an unhealthy level of “can't be without the other” and codependency, because you know me, I like stained happiness, I like sweetness with a morbid undertaste. They need each other. They love each other too, but they need each other to live, to tell them every day that they're good, or that they're enough, that they're worthy of living. (Lowkey adds to this how familiar / touchy with each other they seem to be at the ada... Personal space was never an option for them. )
Their dynamics are genuinely intriguing. It's curious how Atsushi deeply respects Dazai, but also doesn't hesitate to call him out, politely make fun of him, or stand up for himself; all in the very polite-aggressive Atsushi way. It takes the shape of a kind of relationship that is very unique I think. And it's very cute how weak Dazai is for Atsushi– well, especially compared to how he treats Akutagawa (sorry, Akutagawa!), it's obvious that Atsushi is Dazai's favourite boy. Dazai looks at Atsushi like he was the world.
Finally, I think it adds complexity to their relationship their struggle to understand each other– well, mostly on Atsushi's end, because Dazai is nearly canonly omniscient, while also being proverbially hard to see inside. I like to explore Atsushi's struggle to understand Dazai; especially because I think Atsushi is especially perceptive, and I think he can see Dazai to an extent that is way deeper than most– but still not nearly enough. I like Atsushi - he's a very complex character -, and I like how he's a lot more observant and smart than he may appear, a misguiding appearance he takes advantage of too to a small extent. Yet, it's never enough to get through Dazai, and I like to picture Atsushi's frustration because of it / the potential angst caused by it.
Likewise, it's interesting how Atsushi is one of the only people (the only other one would be Dostoyevsky I think) who we see repeatedly catch Dazai by surprise. So there's a part of Dazai that Atsushi sees even when Dazai doesn't expect him to, and there's a part of Atsushi Dazai doesn't see when he can't predict his actions. I think it traces back to the “Atsushi having the upper hand over Dazai”, and really, I adore this constantly oscillating power play.
There's also the whole thing about bsd basically being how Dazai falls in love with humanity little by litte, and how Atsushi precisely personifies this beautiful humanity that's screaming, running, and spilling blood. In the two occasions Dazai confessed to Dostoyevsky how he loves humanity, it felt a little like confessing how he loves Atsushi too, because he's the character that most of all represents that humanity.

It was also my first BSD fanfic so 'The bar he chose to visit today wasn't anything special' part is burned into my memory haha)

What he's done to Atsushi is justified because this world is a lie and he's better in others... and even in this world Atsushi would obv be happy once Dazai is out of the picture...
