The energy-efficient desalination system produces fresh water without chemical additives and transforms leftover salts into useful materials
Desalination is the process of generating freshwater from brackish or saltwater, usually through the process of reverse osmosis. While this can be a very useful tool in water shortages, it also has some pretty huge drawbacks--reverse osmosis requires a lot of energy, requires chemical treatment of the water, and produces concentrated brine as a waste product which can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems.
Researchers have recently discovered a new way to perform desalination using solar energy, which doesn't require chemical inputs and collects waste salt instead of producing brine. Concentrating the waste salt in a solid form instead of brine means that it can later be processed to extract valuable minerals like lithium.

France on Tuesday announced a "first of its kind" plan to phase out coal by 2030, oil by 2045 and gas by 2050 during a global conference aim
Last month, France unveiled a pledge to eliminate all coal use by 2030, oil use by 2045, and gas use by 2050--making their energy generation essentially free of fossil fuels by 2050.

Denying the role that individuals need to play in combating the climate crisis is the leftist version of climate change denial. Anyone responding to suggestions of realistic, accessible changes to reduce your own impact with anything resembling β100 companies are responsible for most of our emissions so this is pointlessβ are engaging in science denialism.
There is no way that collective action takes place without individuals making changes in their own lives. Yes, the rich are more responsible than the poor and yes, what we need is systematic change. However, there absolutely are things we can and should be doing to reduce our own impact and put pressure on polluting industries through direct action and boycott.
These include stopping or reducing flying, eliminating or drastically reducing our consumption of meat and dairy, buying second hand where possible, repairing, recycling and supporting environmental action and rewilding efforts. None of this in isolation will mend the world but its a hell of a lot better than passing the buck while refusing to make any changes in our own lives.
I know that the idea that climate change is caused by someone else; somewhere else, and that itβs up to them to change instead of us is seductive rhetoric, but itβs also extremely dangerous. It encourages the kind of apathy that plays directly into the hands of corporations who want us to feel powerless and to continue to consume as we do now.
We canβt just sit around and wait for The Revolution; we have to live revolutionary lives.
Just to add for some of you in the notes, the β100 corporations are responsible for 71% of emissionsβ headline was a gross, clickbait misrepresentation of the truth. Influencers and media outlets twisted the results of this study because they knew consumers wanted something, anything, to tell them that the responsibility isnβt on them to make any change, since itβs all the fault of those big nasty corporations. The following is from the Fullfact analysis of this study:
βIn the original press release accompanying the report, CDP said: β100 active fossil fuel producers including ExxonMobil, Shell, BHP Billiton and Gazprom are linked to 71% of industrial greenhouse gas emissions since 1988.β
βThis means that the total estimated cumulative greenhouse gas emissions released by human activity (excluding carbon dioxide from land use, land use change and forestry, and agricultural methane) between 1988 and 2015, 71% of those emissions originated from 100 fossil fuel producers. This includes the emissions from producing fossil fuels (like oil, coal and gas), and the subsequent use of the fossil fuels they sell to other companies. Therefore, it might not come as such a surprise that these 100 entities are linked to 71% of human activity-related greenhouse gas emissions, since all 100 are fossil fuel producers.β
In other words, this study (which was extremely limited in scope) concluded that 100 companies produce 71% of the fossil fuels which are then used by other industries and by consumers themselves. 100 companies arenβt causing 71% of emissions, theyβre producing the fossil fuels that are then linked to 71% of emissions. Those are completely different things.
: Top AI models keep saying youβre right, and thatβs the problem
State-of-the-art AI models tend to flatter users, and that praise makes people more convinced that they're right and less willing to resolve conflicts, recent research suggests. These models, in other words, potentially promote social and psychological harm. Computer scientists from Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon University have evaluated 11 current machine learning models and found that all of them tend to tell people what they want to hear. The authors β Myra Cheng, Cinoo Lee, Pranav Khadpe, Sunny Yu, Dyllan Han, and Dan Jurafsky β describe their findings in a preprint paper titled, "Sycophantic AI Decreases Prosocial Intentions and Promotes Dependence." "Across 11 state-of-the-art AI models, we find that models are highly sycophantic: they affirm usersβ actions 50 percent more than humans do, and do so even in cases where user queries mention manipulation, deception, or other relational harms," the authors state in their paper.
[...]
The risk posed by sycophancy may appear to be innocuous flattery, the researchers say, but that's not necessarily the case. They point to research showing that LLMs encourage delusional thinking and to a recent lawsuit [PDF] against OpenAI alleging that ChatGPT actively helped a young man explore methods of suicide. "If the social media era offers a lesson, it is that we must look beyond optimizing solely for immediate user satisfaction to preserve long-term well-being," the authors conclude. "Addressing sycophancy is critical for developing AI models that yield durable individual and societal benefit."

On Dentists
So I canβt brush my teeth. Like, itβs the worst kind of hell. I went to the dentist for a cleaning today and I told the hygienist this, and she was wonderfully helpful.
There are some incredibly soft toothbrushes available- namely, post-surgical brushes. Running them under hot water makes them even softer.
She told me that you donβt really need to use toothpaste- itβs mostly marketing. The foam gets to me, so that is really reassuring.
She gave me two particularly soft brushes and some xylitol gum. Trident is a market brand of xylitol gum, which helps with your teeth and can make your breath smell better.
The whole purpose of brushing is to disrupt plaque buildup. You donβt need to brush twice a day, every day with toothpaste if you brush correctly- little circles, focusing on near the gums (where most plaque builds up). So if youβre having a bad sensory day and canβt brush at all, itβs not the end of the world.
Hell, you donβt even need a toothbrush if even the post-surgical ones are too harsh. Going over your teeth with the same motions using a washcloth is enough.
She wants to find a fluoride rinse that has a taste I can stand (peppermint is the only mint I can stand) but sheβs not particularly worried about it.
I go to Dr. Barr in Chicago. If you can get to the State St. Macyβs, his office is nearby. Heβs very kind and patient and really understanding of my needs as an autistic person. The hygienist, I donβt know her name, announced everything she was going to do before she did it, and stopped frequently to see how I was doing.
This is really the only positive dentist Iβve ever had- past dentists have been too rough and not bothered to help find ways I can actually brush.
Basically this is a glowing recommendation for Dr. Barrβs office if youβre autistic, afraid of dentists, or have sensory needs. This is a recommendation even if you donβt have any of those things.
Im actually crying i feel like this post was reblogged for me oh my god oh my god oh my lord thank you
You can also dilute your mouthwash and use it to swish around if it burns. My dentist does this so consider it dentally approved
If you were feeling guilty about your brushing habits, either due to sensory issues, pain, allergies, executive dysfunction, or just plain fatigue, hereβs what you need to know about what is and isnβt necessary if your dental care!
Post-covid, I got really horrible shit going on with my gag reflex where for some reason the mint flavor of toothpaste (and only toothpaste) would make me gag so hard that Iβd throw up. Then I found a kids toothpaste thatβs like strawberry flavored or something, but it has the proper adult amount of flouride, so it works for me and I donβt gag much anymore. Hereβs an article with some options if youβre like me lol
Dr. Gemma Wheeler lists best non-mint toothpaste options for adults. The list includes those that are truly non mint, without oils or aromas
Also for the people who canβt stand foam, the ingredient youβre looking to avoid is called SLS.
I share this frequently, but I had a very difficult time making myself floss because I hated the way that standard floss digs into my fingers when I use it. I switched to floss picks, and boom: A hated activity instantly became entirely neutral. Much easier to convince myself to do! If you have the same problem with standard floss, this might be worth a try.
Also, my most recent trip to the dentist, I was told that xylitol is a very effective treatment for dry mouth! And also that dry mouth is bad for your teeth, because it can disrupt the PH balance in your mouth, making your teeth more susceptible to cavities. While you want to be very careful to keep any xylitol products away from dogs in particular and probably pets in general, if you have dry mouth, you can try checking for products with xylitol in them.
Of note: My brother endorses the OraNusre brand of flavorless toothpaste; he says it βtastes like toothbrushβ. My mom, meanwhile, is a fan of the Hello brand, which comes in different fruity and sweet flavors. Both of these are listed at the non-mint toothpaste link above.
If you prefer a toothpaste or a mouthwash for dry mouth, I use BiotΓ¨ne; itβs not cheap, but brushing once a day with it, a tube of BiotΓ¨ne toothpaste lasts me around four to five months. As far as Iβm aware, itβs only in mint flavor.
I once unexpectedly had to stay over at my grandparents'. I did not have time to grab anything other than my keys so I had to borrow some stuff to sleep over. They both have dentures so they did not have a toothbrush, but I used a piece of cloth and some salt - it worked perfectly. It's significantly less sensorially invasive than brushing and it gets your teeth wonderfully clean. I got the idea from a post about medieval dental care, apparently it was quite common to do it that way back then.

Iβm kinda surprised that nalbinding isnβt as popular as crochet and knitting tbh because it has an even lower barrier of entry tools wise and unlike crochet and knitting it makes fabric that you can cut.
I guess itβs because itβs slower or something.
Nalbinding aka needle binding is when you use yarn and a big sewing needle to make fabric btw
It also has a lot of different kinds of stitches you can do that make different densities of fabric.
Some people even make rugs.
I feel like part of it might be casual people are generally aware of the existence of crochet and knitting, even if they donβt know very much about either, but have never heard of nalbinding
Yeah I hadnβt heard of it until recently and I ordered a big bone needle for myself to try it out and that should be arriving soon.
I was surprised that Iβd never heard of it though. Itβs older than knitting and crocheting and even though itβs been done all over the world itβs super relevant to Nordic culture and my grandmother and I are both into keeping in touch with our roots a bit so Iβm surprised Iβve never heard of it.
It seems like the sort of thing that would be popular even if not as popular as crocheting and knitting, considering the low barrier of entry.
You also donβt need a bunch of different sized needles for nalbinding or whatever. The size of the stitch is controlled either completely freehand or by pulling it against one of your fingers. Most people who have a lot of nalbinding needles seem to either have tried out wood, bone, and metal ones to see which kind they liked or they enjoy carving wood or bone and like making their own needles as an extra hobby.
Itβs also a lot easier to freehand and adjust as you go than crochet or knitting and you mostly go by inches instead of rows and number of stitches so a large number of accessories like stitch markers or whatever isnβt really necessary.
Maybe the lack of accessories also makes it unpopular idk. People do like collecting things in their nests.
I've been wanting to do so, I cannot find anyone who can teach me, and any books I can find on it are Ass in the Visual Learning department. Otherwise I'd be making the hell outta some nalbinded fabric
I found this channel by a nice man who makes up close tutorials
I create videos on YouTube to learn people how to needlebind using two fingers and your thumb. Needlebinding helps people to relax, relieve
I thought this would be kind of a niche post to make but I was quickly reminded that Iβm on tumblr, the website full of gay people with one billion hobbies.

I want you guys to all start making a bigger stink about Tumblr's Age Verification Horseshit.
Like they tried to change Reblogs and people rightfully got up in arms, this is a LOT worse. In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.
That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. Die Gedenken Sind Frie baby. This is all a reaction to people getting uppity about their lowly lowly rights and is being propped up by the same bad actors tht have made life unlivable. Fuck that shit.
"Well it's only being rolled out in Brazil and UK" Yeah, to start. "Well they're being forced to do this by laws." YOu know it's always really funny when these tech giants (Or whatever you call owning tumblr dot com) get really antsy about laws considering they pick and choose which ones they abide by.
This is a breaking point and it's going to be very interesting to see how we proceed from here.
i get this now and it won't let me click through to any 'mature' blogs :(
Where's the fucking. The form. The fucking form. Hang on, lemme find it.
Tumblr is a place to express yourself, discover yourself, and bond over the stuff you love. It's where your interests connect you with your
This! Please fill out this! Select "Feedback" and fill out the form! They won't necessarily be paying attention to us complaining in posts, but they will read these forms!
Go do the same thing as in March, go send in feedback forms telling them to back off with their age verification bullshit.
