on matariki a few years ago I was swimming in the basin of a waterfall (in my undies, in the middle of winter of course) and a longfin eel on the smaller side swam up to me. I held out my hand just to see what she would do (not the smartest idea considering those teeth) and she just. weaved under my hand like a slippery cat. fully brushing up against my hand. I even started petting her and she didn't pull away or leave. sometimes I think about how many people would change their minds about fish if they had experienced that instead of me. fish are intelligent, social, emotional creatures that most people don't even attempt to understand. thanks for sharing, this made me smile so big. I <3 tuna kuwharuwharu

when i was in uni there was a pond on campus that used to house (and hopefully still does) a couple of gorgeous eels. They'd hang out near the path, and somehow project pus- in-boots eyes up at people. They were well accustomed to students bearing gifts, one would start doing graceful twirls and barrel rolls as soon as the food came out. i have no idea if it figured out how to do that itself to charm people and maximize profits, or if some student had decided to do a practical study in eel training, but it absolutely worked as intended. The other eel didn't join in, but got to share in the reward which tbh was very smart of them.
