I mean full-on khaki-shorts-wearing, traversing-wilderness-with-nothin'-but-a-machete Adrian who yoinks snakes outta trees and pets swamp puppies and will unflinchingly dig around in elephant faeces for signs of a rare parasitic tapeworm if needed.

Oh, humans eat socially? No problem, Adrian has observed many many animals eat. Did you know that an obscure species of small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid also eats socially? Adrian can give you a not-so-short presentation on them.

Oh, the human has no external carapace and so its internal sounds are absurdly loud, wet and off-putting? No problem, Adrian was just conducting an expedition last month researching the incredible eridian animal, the Wet Loud Worm from the south-east region of Wet Loud Wormland. They're desensitised, it's fine.

social ergonomics should mean looking at social structures and analyzing the outcomes they have re: human welfare, and then taking that information back to the design board and redesigning things to hurt people less.

the field of economics initially involved talking about how good an idea slavery was. the good news is that we as a civilization are by and large working towards out improvement and humanization.

social workers are the reason homeless shelters stay open. the reason needle exchanges happen. the reason harm reduction is even a field. macro social work quite literally involves studying human behavior, seeing where harm is being caused, testing what improvements can be made, and then lobbying to get those improvements made.

love that when I say "yes and no" and also indicate that social work NOW, as we speak, is often used as a tool of coercive institutional control, not as an argument that it should not exist but merely to say "well, sorta, but not really" you just assume I want to (checks notes) "burn it all down"

In what other contexts do you think someone might encounter harm perpetuated by social workers?

What immediate forms of protest or change do you think are or aren't available to a person in that position?

Also, REAL fucking bold of you to claim that social work is responsible for the invention of harm reduction and needle exchanges. Harm reduction, a philosophy which EXPLICITLY was developed by people doing peer-to-peer support to provide care for people who were barred from accessing mainstream support because of their drug use!

Yeah, a lot of people in harm reduction NOW are there through social work, including a lot of people whose social work training leads them to a condescending and paternalistic perspective that alienates people doing peer-to-peer work inside these same organizations. Because social work has realized that harm reduction WORKS, but that doesn't mean they're actually ready to stop being fucking weird about drug users!

I think its very VERY telling that the tags said "#if we just refuse to engage in systems with any racist roots #we will be sitting in a mud pit with the ashes of civilization around us" because oh, yeah? You think that without everything built by white supremacist institutions, there would be no civilization? and nothing of value? just "a mud pit"?
