DRAGONS TAKE OVER MY MIND… SVSSS MODERN AU WHERE DRAGONS ARE SUPER COMMON AND ARE TREATED LIKE STRAY CATS.
All of the CQMS peak lords are different breeds of dragons that frequent a specific area. It just so happens that SY is the like… dragon control guy that handles dragon sightings in the area.
Now, not all dragons are the same size, and not all of them have the same anatomy…. SO YOU HAVE SCENES OF LARGE WIND DRAGON SJ DECIDING TO NAP AND SUNBATHE IN THE MIDDLE OF A ROAD. HE TAKES UP THE ENTIRE STREET AND WON’T MOVE—EVEN SNAPPING AT ANYBODY THAT GETS CLOSE.
SY, who is familiar with this dragon (he feeds it on occasion and once helped treat its injury) is called and he’s just so tired when he walks up. He’s pinching the bridge of his nose and trying to keep his voice calm as he tells SJ politely that “you cannot nap here.” This of course quickly turns into a screaming match between man and dragon where SJ lets out a loud screech and storms off, knocking streetlights askew as he leaves. It doesn’t cause any harm, but it’s enough of an inconvenience for SY that SJ feels like he’s won.
Water dragon/Serpent Liu Qingge who keeps entering grocery stores to get misted in the vegetable section. It’s unsanitary and he keeps eating the produce there and nobody can get him out. Of course SY is called and after a back and forth they have to bring a fire truck over to hose LQG down in what LQG considers an epic battle. Of course this wrecks the supermarket a bit but LQG stops going there in favor of appearing at ungodly hours of the day to challenge fire trucks to fights.
HUGE earth dragon YQY that disrupts the city life every time he rises on his hind legs to check the rooftops of nearby buildings for SJ. He keeps stepping on things and breaking things in his search for the wind dragon. Thankfully YQY is much more agreeable than SJ and accepts the compromise of “Asking around, rather than searching on his own. This brings us scenes of YQY wanting to start searching for his wayward dragon but remembering that he shouldn’t be so destructive so instead he peers into a building with a large eye and lets out the most polite “trill” he can muster. (It’s like a deep growl thing). It takes the locals a few months to get used to this, and when they do they always laugh and tell YQY to hold on while they check their local areas dragon watch website before pointing him in the right direction.
Plant dragon MQF (an earth dragon subspecies) that is very interested in hospitals and often peers in through windows just to watch things happen. He doesn’t do it often and likes to imitate whatever he sees on wild specimen. He’s less of a problem than the others, it only becomes a problem when spring comes around because then he’s warding patients away from the hospital because it’s his territory. Each time SY is called over and usually taken hostage, where he’ll offer MQF some type of snack and sedate him. In reality MQF is aware of the sedatives and kicks up a fuss for the sole purpose of building an immunity before beginning to replicate it through his magical plant powers. He hasn’t managed to do it yet but still… Clever fucking dragon.
Fire dragon WQW that keeps building his nests in Home Depot’s. It happens way too often. The only solution SY’s found is temporary relocations, but those usually don’t last long. The longest relocation they managed to do was putting the dragon in a glass blowing facility. The only reason it didn’t work out is because the place shut down after a while, they’d been going out of business anyways. All SY can do is scold WQW away and call it a day knowing that he’ll (WQW) inevitable come back in like a few months.
Fellow wind dragon QQQ who likes to lounge around in places where she shouldn’t be. She’s taken interest in kites and has been frequently harassing this shop owner—‘s ex boyfriend. Yeah, she’s a dragon with a grudge. QQQ, lover of pretty things, is quite fond of a shop owner that makes kites that resemble her. She’s always amazed by the likeness and prideful at how her beauty is being appreciated. When the shop owner temporarily shut down because she got screwed over by her cheating scumbag ex boyfriend, QQQ somehow connected the dots and has started terrorizing him… literally, she’s not playing she is actively hunting him. SY’s glad she hasn’t been able to get to him yet, otherwise there’d be a whole mess and then the city might try to get rid of her and it’d be this entire hassle (one that he’s already been through). Unlike SJ, when SY explains that if she kills the evil ex she won’t be able to stay and her beloved kite maker will get in trouble as well, she seems to catch the memo and backs off. (SJ’s evil ass is a casual killer of humans and often hunts poachers for sport. No matter how elegant he looks he how patient he is with civilians, SJ is actually quite cruel.)
SY’s only basis of fighting the city on witchunting SJ is that SJ’s only been going after poachers (a lie he’s eaten a few civilians too but what SY doesn’t know won’t hurt him) and that he hasn’t caused actual harm to the city besides a few minor inconveniences. SY’s just lucky that the city needs his expertise and can’t afford to lose him when he’s so familiar with the dragons.
SQH is a bit of a mixed bag because he sometimes just leaves the area of SY’s jurisdiction. When he’s in SY’s area though he’s not a major issue, if anything he seems to just bully the lower dragons in some sort of weird stress relief. (He’s bullying as a result of MBJ bullying him wwwwww)
NYY, a cloud dragon, (crossbreed of a wind dragon and a water dragon) is actually the least troublesome, all she does is follow SJ around and occasionally take a dip in hotel pools with LMY, a water dragon/serpent just like her brother. The only issue is when SHL comes to SY’s area to play with the two. SHL is a troublemaker through and through.
In another city XF also has dragons (as well and another thing) he has to deal with.
He has a temperamental ice dragon (MBJ), a furry,,, pining crossbreed (LBJ, who’s a cross between a fenrir and a dragon), a two-faced earth dragon (SQH), a raging runaway lesbian dragon that can never sit still (SHL), a wild fenrir that is ALWAYS DOING SOME BULLSHIT (TLJ), and a wild serpent that’s halfway there to becoming a dragon (ZZL)
I have soooooo many thoughts on Shen Jiu as an educator. I wouldn't call him a good one, but I genuinely believe HE believes what he does is in his students' best interests. He is cruel, but he sees it as necessity.
I wanted to explore this a little more and have a scene from my current WIP Everything So Bidden below.
[For context, this follows another fic of mine, Nothing So Undoing but all you need to know essentially is it's a Shen Twins!AU and SY stopped the trial from ending in SJ!SQQ's imprisonment & torture.]
After his ordeal at the trial and its immediate aftermath, Shen Qingqiu is forced to spend two days and nights on Qian Cao. He relents less than gracefully.
"I'm fine," he'd hissed that first night.
"You most certainly are not." Mu Qingfang had hissed right back. "Stay in that bed or so help me, shixiong, I will resort to using Bai Zhan measures."
Worse than being forcibly plied with pity is being equated or even compared to Bai Zhan. Shen Qingqiu stays in the bed.
Now, the third day, he's finally allowed to leave. Ming Fan is waiting for him right outside of Mu Qingfang's personal medicine house. Ming Fan straightens an already stiff spine and fights down his smile upon seeing Shen Qingqiu. He looks like he desperately wants to jog right up to his master's side and be sewn into place, but the young man knows better. He waits, bows, and only straightens once Shen Qingqiu has brushed past him.
"Ming Fan, this master has been meaning to speak with you." Shen Qingqiu says in lieu of a greeting.
His disciple looks halfway between thrilled and nauseous. "Shizun, how may this disciple best serve you?"
Out of all of his disciples, Ming Fan is probably the one who likes Shen Qingqiu the most. Ning Yingying had become a bit more distant as she grew and began seeking her own path. Not so for Ming Fan. He's desperate and harmless, easy and convenient to rely on.
Truly, Shen Qingqiu had been meaning to have this discussion with Ming Fan for quite some time. Then, of course, he was framed for colluding with demons, thrown in the Water Prison and interrogated every day, and then was slapped in the face twice by his suddenly-not-dead twin brother. He's had several days to consider things, and a deep itch had grown in his heart. His brother had challenged him—if indirectly—on his mentorship. Shen Qingqiu refuses to lie back and simply accept those stinging words.
This will hurt, but it's for the best. The rot has been allowed to fester too long without lancing. "We will talk on the fight back to Qing Jing. Come." Without fanfare, he steps onto Xiu Ya and doesn't wait for Ming Fan to mount his own sword before ascending into the sky.
Ming Fan rushes up to his master's side anyway, his face still bright, if a bit pale. "Shizun, did the Bamboo House meet your expectations? Yingying-shimei and I kept things in order for you every day you were gone."
Shen Qingqiu hums. Neither approval nor dismissal. "Ming Fan, what are the core tenants of Qing Jing Peak?"
"Seek understanding, stand tall but be flexible against the wind, recognize the spirit of art wherever it blossoms, listen to all sides before speaking yourself." His disciple recited. A perfect echo of the dips and stresses that Shen Qingqiu himself used when speaking these words.
"Which of these tenants do you adhere to the strongest?" Shen Qingqiu continues.
Ming Fan pauses, his jaw clenching once before he answers. "Seek understanding?"
"Are you asking or telling me?"
"Seek understanding, Shizun!"
Shen Qingqiu hums again.
In the quiet, the younger man falters on his answer. "Ah, that is to say, this disciple works hard to adhere to every tenant of Qing Jing Peak! However, if one were to rank their own talents and skills, it is only natural to have one stand out. This does not mean the others are wholly lacking! Rather, they are only dim in comparison to the one that shines the brightest. In truth-"
"Ming Fan," Shen Qingqiu interrupts. His disciple's teeth clack together. "Seeking understanding is not your strong suit. You are dutiful and thorough, but only when you decide something has worth. If you've decided it has none, then it escapes your view. You speak as if the words are choking your throat to escape, and, if anything, are much too flexible as you bend and curl from the slightest dissenting breeze."
"Shizun…"
"Your sense for art is unrefined, lacking complexity. You paint for the sake of it, without any emotion behind your strokes. Your poetry does not question, your music bears no shape." Shen Qingqiu continues. His disciple's flight has begun to lag, though the youth bears no expression. Good. "Knowing this, why are you the head disciple?"
Ming Fan takes in a breath to speak and Shen Qingqiu flicks open his fan with a harsh crack. "Think, then open your mouth." He scolds.
Their flight is silent for many minutes. Another good sign. Whatever his current head disciple says will help Shen Qingqiu decide how deep he needs to scour his peak.
The clouds they pass by and through are light, almost bouncing in the air. The peaks of the Cang Qiong mountain range stretch out below and spatters of darker colours jostle about from one peak to another. The sect is alive and well. The air is clean. The ambient qi shivers outward in meandering ripples—a leaf settling upon a still lake. It's almost peaceful.
At last, Ming Fan finds his words. "I am no genius when it comes to Qing Jing's cultivation method." He says. His voice is quiet, but strong. "But there is something else you value, more than the rest. I believe it's devotion, rather than talent."
"Talent," Shen Qingqiu spits, "what good is talent? Who does talent serve? Certainly not the talented—for they are only as talented as everyone deems them to be. To be talented is to be a creature behind glass, always looked upon and dancing until you become dependent on the greedy eyes glued to your cage. Genius for the sake of genius only leads to dissatisfaction. You are correct, loyalty is what I treasure."
He watches the younger man absorb his words and start to preen under the unsaid praise. "Because it is a choice?" Ming Fan guesses.
Shen Qingqiu slides his fan shut to tap it against the meat of his hand. "In part. Ming Fan, you are incredibly loyal. It's why you've retained your position for so long. However, that loyalty is now choking you. Be loyal, and start doubting."
"But Shizun," he doesn't need to look to know the face his disciple is making, "those are opposite directions. No one can do both."
Shen Qingqiu scoffs and doesn't try to hide it. "Do you think this master blindly trusts in every word, promise, and supplication that comes out of our Sect Leader's mouth? Certainly not. And neither should you. You can follow someone without losing sight of yourself."
"You…want me to start doubting you?" Ming Fan says slowly, almost unbelieving.
"Yes, boy." Finally, Shen Qingqiu can let go of the anticipation he's been holding. Good, good, this is very good. He almost wants to go track down his brother right this second to gloat. See? Look at his head disciple. This is what a proper education looks like. "Seek understanding—question everything. Your friends, your family, most especially those seated above you, and never stop. I will be observing your progress in this. Should you find this disagreeable with your way of life, do not worry."
Ming Fan releases his own heavy breath of anticipation, his sword coming up to fly in tandem with his teacher's. "Shizun-"
"For I will strip you of your title immediately and will kick you down the stairs of Qing Jing myself." His disciple goes silent again, that's fine. Failing in this or wincing away from this truth will prove beyond any doubt whether Ming Fan is truly capable of eventually ascending to Peak Lord status. Should he hesitate, then he shouldn't waste his time toiling to nothing on Qing Jing.
Shen Qingqiu can't be sure if Ming Fan hears everything he says in this moment. But as he watches, his head disciple opens his mouth, closes it, frowns deeply, opens, closes, frowns some more. Thinking. "This disciple will do his utmost to meet your expectations, Shizun. Should I fail, I will welcome the fall."
