HAPPY NATIONAL BE KIND TO BUGS DAY!!!
ššš¦šŖ²š¦šŖ³šŖ°ššš¦ššŖ±
I got hired to write a light-hearted romantasy story, and I really hope this is light-hearted and romantic enough:
can this be a title??
ideally, it would be crossed out with a little X, but because it's just one story in an anthology I'll probably have to go with the same font styling as everyone else
their names are Waldemar Pemberton and Lambert Beadle, and it is extremely romantic
the book that accepted my ghoul hate sex yaoi has a cover!
here's the link to pre-order - I'm so curious about the other stories. hopefully mine does not give people horrible whiplash
HEHEHHEHEHE
SUPER TOP SECRET WORK HACK!!! If you explicitly tell people, "You are an adult and a professional, I trust you to do your job; just keep me in the loop and let me know if there are questions," then thank and/or praise them when they accomplish your mutual goals? they will keep doing things for and with you. Sometimes they will even side with you over other people in the organization, because you've taken the time to establish that baseline respect and trust! hashtag winning or whatever
I just want to say this can work with kids too, mostly because of the 'respect' thing.
This past month, Parks & Rec has been doing a lot of work on the field adjacent to my school. They have trucks with flatbeds, mowing/tree-cutting/postholing machinery, etc. And when they arrived, I (campus monitor) was told I would need to herd the kids away from the trucks/machinery and basically prevent them from creating a dangerous situation.
So when recess came around and the kids stampeded out the door I held them up and I said (being funny but at the same time serious, you know how it is, kids listen better if you're funny)
"Okay, I know that you're all smart AND mature, right? And talented and good looking? Definitely the smartest and most talented class in this school? (I say this to every class, they're all 'my favorites'.) And because you're SO intelligent and mature, I don't need to actually TELL you that these guys have vehicles and machinery that you need to stay clear of, right? Because I know you figured that out already, and I also know that YOU know how sad I would be if any of you were run over, or squashed, or had a pole fall on you. I would be SO SAD, like, I would probably have to lie down on the floor and cry. So you're not going to make me cry, right? I can trust you to stay away from the trucks and machines no matter where they are on the field? Because you're wonderful and amazing? My favorites? My inspiration?"
And they're laughing at me of course, because I'm being so dramatic. Some of them are "Yes, and-"ing my dramatics and inventing more involved mourning processes I should undertake if any of them get run over. Some of them are yelling at me that they are NOT mature yet and they are VERY STUPID and I should know this.
It's been three weeks. We had one conversation about it. None of them have gone anywhere near the trucks. This is actually in excess of the typical elementary-schooler's working memory and I'm very proud of them. I haven't had to blow the whistle at ONE person for getting too close even when the trucks were literally 40 feet from the actual playground.
"I know I can trust you to do this", even when phrased with humor, is like a magic key that unlocks teamwork+cooperation.
I usually phrased it to middle-schoolers as, "I was a weird artist before I was a teacher, so I don't understand how children work, really. So I am going to treat you guys like adults unless and until you give me a reason not to." It's amazing how far they'll go to keep that adult status.

Overlock Stitch by @clothes_reetzy
Damn, that's useful
Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

You know the parable about how the foolish man built his house upon sand and the wise man built his house upon rock and itās always about having a sturdy foundation well there is also the fact of location which is that the sand probably used to be rock except itās been eroded to sediment because itās a FUCKING FLOODPLAIN

A little deep-sea sparkle āØ
Bloody-belly comb jellies are ctenophores. Like other comb jellies, they swim by beating rows of tiny, hair-like cilia. The shimmering display in this video isn't bioluminescenceāit's light from MBARI's ROV diffracting through those transparent cilia, creating a dazzling rainbow effect.
These twilight zone treasures are found in the North Pacific Ocean and measure about 16 centimeters (six inches) across. At the depths where these comb jellies live, their crimson color appears black, helping them disappear into the darkness. Sometimes the ocean's most spectacular light shows come from animals that are masters of staying hidden.
Googled something about quick hydration and it suggested big jug of water, couple tbsp pickle juice, dash of lime juice.
Its surprisingly tasty????
Pleased to report that after a day of this i am not longer craving caper brine and my mouth is not dry as usual. There's some good suggestions in the notes too that I want to try.
-ancient roman posca: water, red or white wine vinegar, honey, salt, herbs (coriander, mint, thyme)
-switchel: water, ginger, vinegar, sweetener, lemon, salt
-ayran: yogurt, water, salt, mint
-Agua pepino: water, cucumbers, lime, sugar, optional mint.
I have been reminded of:
-shrub: vinegar, sida water, elderberry (or other berry), sugar.
I have now been informed of
-sekanjabin: honey, vinegar, mint, water.
Instead of doing NanoWriMo I will be doing something where I try to aim for writing an actual average of 400 words a day for the month of November in memory of Terry Pratchett, who as far as I know never thought telling a computer to write a book for you is a good way to hone your skills as a writer.
I LOVE THIS. THIS is the spirit of NaNoWriMo: to invent a challenge to make you write.
If I may add some ideas:
The 666 challenge: Writing six pages a day in a month (no matter how shitty) because Stephen King writes 6 pages a day. Equating it with the devil is to explain why it's shit sometimes.
The 420 challenge: Get high. Write 420 words a day.
THE OTHER 51 challenge: Write 51 words a day because, yes, Hamilton wrote 51 essays in six months, but that bitch was crazy, and you can write 51 words without feeling like you're running out of time.
The Fibonacci challenge: Try to write as many words a day as required to meet the Fibonacci sequence. So, 100 on day one. 200 on day two. 300 on day three. Etcetera. If you don't hit the number in the sequence, you can respond "DO I LOOK LIKE A MATHIMATICIAN TO YOU"
If you wanna NaNo your heart out at 1667 a day, absolutely do that. Enjoy it! But if start talking now if you're looking for a group who will join you and not try to fuck AI up its server-hole.
I would like to gently advise any Tumblr users to absolutely the fuck not try to attempt that "Fibonacci challenge," because it means that your goal for the month of November would be to write 134,692,200 words.
man i wish i had money so bad cause i think i could run the BEST dog boarding/grooming/daycare place but startup costs are so so high
iāve worked in quite a few kennels myself and i would pull the parts i like and leave the ones i donāt if i did it myself.
for example, one kennel had stockyard style pens for the dogs outside, which meant leashes werenāt necessary. simply open/close gates to make a runway to the designated pen. and had around 15 yards total. i feel like it reduced stress overall and things ran much smoother than leashed kennels i have worked in. (obv would still use leads when applicable)
and another i worked in had concrete kennels with solid walls dividing each kennel and i liked that setup best. it meant dogs werenāt constantly seeing and reacting to their kennel neighbor which also reduced stress.
iāve been in kennels with welded wire kennels and honestly, i didnāt care for it. too much chance of dogs coming into contact with others they donāt know.
basic stuff like carefully selected and monitored play groups, same size dogs only. this would largely be for dogs who are known to staff and predictable.
maintaining a safe dog to staff ratio is paramount to me as well. i couldnāt tell you how many places are intentionally understaffed and it made things hell. the amount of times iāve had to exercise 40 dogs on my own? or the times i havenāt had enough people on hand to assist with dangerous dogs.
ALSO training in body language and behavior for every staff member. iāve literally never been to a kennel where employees get any training in that area whatsoever. they just expect people to come in knowing how to read dogs and how to not get bit. and most people are frankly ass at it.
i truly love working in kennels and handling dogs all day, and i am so tired of it being ruined by management that only cares about money, rather than the welfare of the dogs and staff. like its genuinely not that difficult to do it right. a lot of work, maybe, but not hard.
taps sooo politely on the glass of my enclosure. let me out

This was one of my introductions to military history. I was 14 and haven't ever really looked back. Big fan of star forts and Vauban.
Star forts like this were constructed after gunpowder became common in warfare! The elevated position plus the angled walls were designed to make it harder to just blow a hole in the wall with a big cannon, which is what happened to a lot of pre-gunpowder fortifications.
