Duck Comic Reading Club Week 13: Paperinik New Adventures: Fountains of the Moon
And we're here with another hit for this week issue.
We start things off with the discovery that Evronians has been on the planet, many centuries ago. The art of this city landscape is gorgeous. I won't get tired of saying how good PK art can be.
This is a Xadhoom comic, by the way, so, you know is going to be good. She needs help to track a possible survival ship, in exchange of her help against Evronians.
Come on!? You were best friends a couple weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Zargon gets new orders, he has to recover the spores. He didn't like his work apparently.
But, you know Zargon?
Your race have conquered planet after planet, but with you in charge, planet Earth is kicking you all in the ass. Be happy you're still employed.
The super computer and the genius scientific try to locate the spores nest, but they're outsmarted by the common man. PK found the nest in Africa.
I'm so happy the babies are in the farm now. Keep them away for the danger.
Xadhoom waste no time to fly to the location. On the other hand, PK has to take a commercial flight.
Ok, in the infinite garage, there's not a single vehicle he could take? Why the hell is PK flying commercial?
It is a 25-32 hour flight. In all that time, the Evronians are going to take all the spores. Terrible idea.
Well, at least Donald traveled business class.
He annoyed the hell out of his partner.
Donald arrived to Africa where he met Professor Bruceburton, an anthropology. Looks like she and Uno have been exchanging emails.
Lairduck. Is like Ducklair, but inverse. Very subtle, Uno.
The next three pages are⊠just look at them.
The color, the illumination, the emotion, the dialogue. I get some people might see PK and think, is just a weird Donald comic with a superhero gimmick.
But there's genuinely good things to find in those pages.
Anyway, we have an Evronians' invasion to stop. Our heroes got face-to-face with those nasty aliens, and of course, they beat the hell out of them.
Until...
PK was hit by the slave ray, and know he's just another Evronians' pawn.
But worry not, Xadhoom has the solution.
We have this saying, muerto el perro, muerta la rabia. Xadhoom took it literally.
By the way, we are in the middle of Africa, under the attack of an evil alien force. Of course the US army decides to attack.
She returned to the battle, and destroyed the Evronians.
Poor bastards, the made a living invading the Backyardigans or the Cubeez or Franklin the turtle. The first time they cross someone with the power to oppose them, and everything falls appart.
And now even the earthers are fighting. AND WINNING.
The Evronians run away, of course, but they leave Zargon behind. He now has a one-on-one duel with Xadhoom.
She's so cool.
The fight is not graphic at all, in fact, they only show key moments. But is done in such an amazing way.
Sometimes I sincerely criticize some decisions the comic takes, but not this time. They did great showing a vicious fight with no real violence. You know Zargon is dead.
And to end everything nice and sweet, PK is alive.
They're friends.
They both part ways, and is time to come back home.
Oh.
Looks like Zargon is not that dead yet.
Donald takes the flight back to Duckburg, and is reunited with his travel partner, who's turned out to be the army general, who's name is Abraham Lincoln.
He might want to avoid the theater.
This was a really good issue, is always a pleasure to have Xadhoom around. And it looks like the next one is going to be as good.
PK is on a roll.
Oh? There's a Angus story? To that I say, see you next week.
Space discs and space swords cancelled?? What s next. all other events going to Be pending? What a joke. do better for the athletes on Zargon they worked hard to get there
B4: The Lost City is excellent fodder for the Goodman Games Original Adventure Reincarnated treatment. It is on its own a classic module, but one that is overshadowed somewhat (perhaps because it doesnât bear Gygaxâs byline), so a big old purple hardcover book is a nice way of raising the adventureâs profile. More than that, though, the original only details a sliver of a much larger area of exploration â there is a bit of desert wilderness, most of a pyramid that houses a ghastly secret and then there is some indication of a vast underground city. It is sketched briefly and ultimately left, along with a subterranean wilderness area, largely for the DM to fill out.
No more! Goodman Games finally did the heavy lifting and filled all that out so I donât have to. I much prefer reading someone elseâs lost city than having to make up my own! Seriously, this is practically its own thing. Of the 320 total pages, the reprint and supplemental material takes up just 57 pages. Thatâs a gigantic expansion. And it mostly works. The mysterious culture of the masked Cynidiceans helps sustain a desire (and in some cases, need) to explore the city. My one issue is that the expanse of the explorable region will likely get the attention of players AFTER dealing with the central mystery of the module, which seems slightly anticlimactic. There are some surprises, yet, but Zargon is so compelling I donât like the idea of him playing second fiddle to a mind flayer.
Which brings me to another thing â the illustrations of Zargon here are fine, but I am honestly a tiny bit underwhelmed. Goodman regularly delivers over the top art and Zargon is one of the most over the top early D&D monsters. Itâs not that I wanted better portraits of the false god, I just want moooooore. Two new ones in addition to Hollowayâs original seems miserly.
[Commissioned by @tar-baphon. I already made statistics for Zargon at his previous canon levels of power a few months back, and was also commissioned to create a stronger, ascended version of the Invincible Tyrant. In so doing, I went back over the previous statistics and toned them down a bit. A +6 resistance bonus for a CR 18 creature is a little too much, even for a pseudo-god like Zargon.]
Asura Rana, Zargon
CR 28 LE Outsider (extraplanar)
This massive horror has a reptilian head with a single eye and a single horn. Its body is a column from which grow twenty four tentacles, twelve in the midsection that serve it like arms, and twelve at the base on which is drags itself. Slime oozes from its every surface, and it is covered in scars, tumors and other irregularities of the flesh that bubble and warp as it moves.
Zargon, Abomination of Creation, Devourer of the Depths, the Invincible Tyrant, the Returner
Concerns acid, oozes, regeneration
Domains Earth, Evil, Healing, Law
Subdomains Caves, Growth*, Resurrection, Tyranny
Worshipers alchemists, blights, despots
Minions asuras, shoggoths, whelps of Zargon
Unholy Symbol a spiral horn above a single eye
Favored Weapon rapier
Devotion Expose a living creature to acid and watch the reaction of its flesh for 1 hour. You may use yourself as this subject. Gain a +4 profane bonus to saves against acid effects.
Boons 1: eruptive pustules 1/day; 2: fluid form 1/day; 3: true resurrection 1/day
*clerics of Zargon can use the Growth subdomain to modify the Healing domain
Zargon the Returner is ancient even by the standards of the great asuras. He was the first and greatest spawn of one of the primal gods of creation. Names such as Abhoth and Sheol-Nugganoth are whispered as his parentage, and their true mistake was not destroying him when they had a chance. For Zargon can never truly die, and even if his horn is destroyed by volcanic heat, he will be reborn on another planet in another version of reality.
So say his worshipers, anyway. These statistics represent Zargonâs power at its height, when he ruled in Hell as an asura rana. Zargonâs weakness was uncovered by Geryon, and Asmodeus snapped the horn from his head and cast it into the Material Plane. Zargonâs ultimate goal is to return to Hell, reclaim his dominion and devour Geryon. This goal has been put off for eons, as Zargon enjoys the power he currently has too much to sacrifice it. Better to reign in the Material Plane, reshaping civilizations to his own cruel desires, than return to Hell and being forced to serve the Lords of Hell, or risk failure and total destruction. But if his power base is destroyed without slaying Zargon, he may be prompted to act, and the planes will tremble at the wrath of Zargon Ascendant.

Special Abilities
Asura Rana Traits (Ex, Su and Sp) Zargon has the following traits:
Zargon can grant spells to its worshipers as if he were a deity.
Zargonâs natural weapons, as well as any weapons it wields, are treated as lawful, epic, and evil for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
Infernal Resurrection (Ex) Zargon rules an infernal domain. If he is slain, his body rapidly melts into corruption (leaving behind any gear he held or carried), his soul returns to a hidden location within his realm, and it is immediately restored to life (as true resurrection) at that location. Once this occurs, Zargon canât use this ability again until a full year has passed, although he can use his improved rejuvenation. An asura rana that is slain again during this year or is killed by unusual methods (such as by a true deity or an artifact created for this purpose) is truly slain, but will eventually reincarnate in a weaker form
Immunity to ability damage, ability drain, charm effects, compulsion effects, death effects, energy drain, and petrification.
Regeneration (Ex) Only epic damage, or damage from a creature of equal or greater power (such as an archdevil, deity, demon lord, or protean lord) interrupts Zargonâs regeneration.
Resistance to electricity 30
Summon Asuras and Oozes (Sp) Three times per day as a swift action, Zargon can summon any asura or combination of asuras and oozes whose total combined CR is 20 or lower. This otherwise works like the summon universal monster rule with a 100% chance of success, and counts as a 9th-level spell effect.
Telepathy 300 feet.
Blasphemous Armor (Su) Zargon gains a profane bonus to his Armor Class equal to his Charisma modifier.
Control Ooze (Sp) This functions as a control undead spell, except that it is treated as being a transmutation effect and effects only creatures of the ooze type. This is the equivalent of a 7th level spell.
Disease (Su) Zargonâs Slime; Bite or breath weaponâcontact; save Fort DC 41; onset immediate; frequency 1/day; damage 1d6 Con drain and 1d6 Wisdom drain; cure none. A creature reduced to 0 Constitution while under the effects of this disease dies and is reduced to a puddle (and cannot be returned to life by any effect that requires an intact body). A creature reduced to 0 Wisdom while under the effects of this disease immediately transforms into a whelp of Zargon under Zargonâs control. The save DC is Constitution based.
Horn (Ex) Zargonâs horn is the source of his protection, granting him a +6 resistance bonus on all saving throws and increasing his regeneration by 20 points/round. The horn can be cut free with a successful sunder attempt (hardness 15, DR 20/epic, hp 66), whereupon Zargon loses these abilities until he can reattach the horn as a full-round action.
Improved Rejuvenation (Ex) If slain and his infernal resurrection has been used for the year, Zargon regrows from his horn in 1d4 days. If the horn is cast into a plane outside of Hell, he reforms in his lesser form. If the horn is cast into an active volcano, he is slain forever at this point.
True Elusive Aura (Su) No divination spells or effects function within 250 feet of Zargon unless they are cast by a mythic or divine creature. Even then, the caster must succeed a DC 39 caster level check or the spell is lost.

The Duckburg Commercial Center mall could easily be considered a city unto itself during the month of December. Lights were bright as the noonday sun, and the climate-controlled interior was thick with the cacophony of multitudes of shoppers engaging in the time-honored tradition of holiday commercialism. Donald Duck was among them, slugging 4 hefty paper bags over his shoulder. Behind him, holding his hand and humming along to the carols playing over the PA, was Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles, Donaldâs goddaughter. She had happily agreed to accompany Donald in shopping for his nephews, swearing secrecy with a smile, while he combed through their lists and weaved through the holiday rush.
âZio, arenât I a little too old to hold your hand?â asked Feliciana.
âI told you, Feli,â said Donald, âthis crowd is just too doggone large to risk losing you. We need to stay together.â He looked to one side of the walkway then the other, searching for one particular store. âAha!â he declared, leading Feli through a cluster of people to the entrance of GamePort. âI can finish off the list here, then we can go home and have some cocoa.â
âMmm! Cocoa!â Feli hummed.
Many a shopper perused the many hot titles on display at GamePort, as well as the merchandise the store offered. The cash register was woefully understaffed for the volume of consumers inside, and Donald heaved a sigh at the line he would have to endure.
âLot of people in here today, Zio,â Feli pointed out.
âThatâs an understatement,â Donald said, using a free hand to rake his fingers through his short but messy haircut. âWell, the sooner we get this done, the sooner I can get in line.â Donald trudged over to a shelf full of figurines depicting every pop culture figure imaginable. âWatch the bags, Feli.â
Feli watched her godfather go to work, searching through the stacks and stacks of figures to find the exact ones on his list. Her eyes wandered around the store, watching the hustle and bustle go by her. Kids were playing demos of new games, dancing next to the t-shirts, and their parents were grumbling exasperated words at the lone cashier, obviously up to his neck in it.
âThat poor clerk,â she said to herself, wondering what hidden magic she could implement to aid the overworked teen.
Angry quacking drew her attention back to Zio Donald, who was arguing at another shopper. âI saw that Spiral the Dragon figure first!â he snapped at a burly dog in an overcoat.
âTough beans, chump! Itâs the last one and Iâm goinâ home with it!â the dog growled.
âIâll show you tough beans!â Donald lunged at the dog, who promptly shoved him into the shelf, causing an avalanche of vinyl figurines to rain down on the duck. One particularly large statue out of its box thwacked him on the head, leading Feli to wince upon its impact. Donald twirled around and hit the floor to be buried by the forming pile of figures.
As the mess slowed to a halt, the dog laughed heartily, and many of the shoppers were staring at the commotion inside.
Which would soon be overtaken by the commotion outside.
Eyes and ears were drawn to shrieks of terror, a stampeding crowd and laser blasts flying in all directions. A purple-suited Duck-like creature stepping inside, eyes glowing red, confirmed Feliâs fear, though she wondered what Evronians were doing here, today of all days.
There wasnât much time to wonder, as the Evronian barked, âAll of you! Come out single-file and perhaps weâll spare your lives.â
Feli gulped, fear settling into her stomach. This was a job for Duck Avenger! ...who was buried in hundreds of pop culture paraphernalia, and in his civilian identity, no less.
She dropped to her knees and began furiously digging at the pile. She didnât make it too far before a hand lifted her by the hood of her jacket. Evronian eyes searched her, then opened wide.
âSir!â the soldier shouted, âI recognize this one! She was with Duck Avenger!â
âBring her out here!â came a growl from outside.
âNo!â Feli protested, but she was promptly hauled away in the exiting crowd. As she was dragged away, she looked back at the pile and silently willed her godfather to wake up soon, forced to cooperate with this sudden hostage situation, at least for now.
+++
When Donald came to, the first thing he was aware of was the multitude of weighted cardboard atop him. That, and his throbbing headache. He groaned, long and quiet, as he shoved figurines off of him and eased himself up.
The store was bare. It felt so different, almost eerie, without a single patron crowding around the store shelves. Donald scratched his head, baffled. How long was he out? Was the mall closed? It couldnât be, given the lights in here and outside were still on, and the PA continued its marathon of jolly carols.
âYOU PITIFUL EARTHLINGS!â That gravelled shout reached Donaldâs ears and sent a shiver down his spine.
âWhat the fresh powder was that?â he squeaked to himself.
âEvronians, D.A.,â came Oneâs voice from his bowtie.
âHere?!â Donald hissed, âOn Christmas? Surely you jest!â
âI never jest when it comes to Evronians.â
Donald looked around again, noticing a certain ward he was in charge of to be nowhere to be found. Uh-oh. âFeli?â he called out.
âZip it!â One snipped. âDo you want them to discover you?â
âBut they could have Feli!â whispered Donald, rising to his feet. âIâll show those maniacal brutes who ya donât mess with on Christmas.â
âTheyâre all on the lower level, in the center of the complex. You can sneak up on them and gift them a little surprise.â
âWhat an excellent idea, One.â With a sly smile, Donald pressed a button on the back of his bowtie.
Lines of green light wrapped around him from the neck down. Donald stuck his right arm out as the lines wove together and formed a flat, square shape on his forearm. The green outlined his eyes lastly. Then, Donald was covered in a blanket of green, bright and tingly on him.
When the green vanished, his sailor suit had disappeared, replaced by his red and black jumpsuit, yellow boots, thin black mask, and a fully-formed X-Transformer.
Duck Avenger was ready for action.
+++
Feli gulped and wiggled against the rope she and all the other hostages in the mall were held by. The crowds were tethered to the round fountain in the middle of the mall, while four Evronian soldiers kept a watch on them, their Evroguns at the ready should anyone try any sudden movements.
Feli looked to her right and saw two more Evronians approaching from the fancy boutique down the hall. One of them was the one who mentioned her with Duck Avenger, and they looked to be conversing with each other.
âI told you it would be a good idea to invade during their âChristmasâ season, Kursaal. Magnitudes of potential Freezeflames practically given away to us!â
âBut Zargon, sir,â Kursaal whimpered, âare you not worried about an intervention from...You-Know-Who?â
Zargon laughed loudly and slapped his associate on the back, causing him to fall into the fountain and splash water on several hostages, Feli included.
âDoes that answer your question, you soggy simpleton? That worthless Earth hero likely turned tail and ran like a pathetic coward!â
Zargon approached Feli and kneeled down, stroking her cheek with one finger. âDonât think weâve forgotten Ducklair Tower, meddlesome imp. You and especially Duck Avenger have been thorns in the side of Evron for far too long. This is why youâre going to tell me everything, starting with..who he is and where his base is.â
âNot a chance! Duck Avenger gonna save the day and take you down like he always does!â
With a swift and sure strike, the hand that had just been so gentle toward Feli now slapped her across the face. A smirk curled up as he saw her begin to hyperventilate and tears form in the corners of her eyes. âFoolish child. Duck Avenger isnât here to save your precious emotions now.â
âThen you donât know me very well, Evro-punks!â
All eyes turned to the source of the voice. The Evronians balked in shock, and Feli smiled wide seeing Duck Avenger standing above them on the second floor railing, arms crossed and beak in a frown. He jumped and did a three-point landing next to a planter feet away from the Evronians.
The soldiers surrounded Duck Avenger and aimed their Evroguns at him. The hero raised his hands up slowly as Zargon placed his hand on Feliâs throat, to Duck Avengerâs horror. âDonât think you can escape now, Earth scum. We know your affiliation with this girl.â
âWait, please!â he said, a shake in his voice. âI have a proposition for you guys. Let these innocent people go freeâŠthe blue jay included...â Duck Avenger breathed in and out. â...and Iâll let you capture me.â
âZi- D-Duck Avenger! No!â Feli cried, struggling more.
âSilence!â Zargon growled, tightening his grip.
Feli looked at her Zio, now gagging, tears dripping down her face.
Duck Avengerâs heart lurched. They would surely pay, if his plan worked. If not, then Feli and the crowd were done for. He prayed Zargon would take the bait.
The Evronian captain loosened his hold and turned back to Duck Avenger. âA legion of Freezeflames...or Earthâs only hope silencedâŠâ His beak curled upwards and he rubbed his hands together. âYour fate is sealed, Avenger.â
Zargon snapped his fingers, and two soldiers slipped away from the group and untied the rope. As soon as they were freed, the crowd dispersed in all directions, leaving for safety as quickly as they could. Feli joined them, looking back once at her trapped Zio, before ducking into a nearby restroom. Hold on, Zio, she thought, your sidekick is coming.
âIâve been waiting for this day for a long time,â Zargon said in a low, evil tone. He raised his own Evrogun and fired. Duck Avenger ducked and dove off to the side. A flurry of fire came after him as he rocketed back up to the second floor.
He waved back. âHey! I said Iâd let you capture me! I didnât say Iâd make it easy!â
Zargon yelled in frustration and shot his finger out at Duck Avenger. âShoot that insolent worm!â
Duck Avenger ran down the walkway, dipping and jumping past laser blasts as they came. Every missed blast left a burn mark on the wall, infuriating Zargon more and more.
Duck Avenger vaulted over the railing once more and landed right on a soldier, putting it out of commission. âIâm gonna beat ya into next week!â he declared, fire in his eyes. Straightening, he socked another in the beak and shoved them into another soldier, bringing them both to the ground.
âBlasted hero!â Zargon shouted, pistol-whipping Duck Avenger in the back.
Crying out in pain, he fell on his face, dazed. Rolling over, he grunted as Zargonâs foot came down hard on his belly. Cold sweat began to drip down his brow as he looked into Zargonâs murderous eyes.
âYouâve interfered with the Evronian empire for the last time,â growled Zargon in a low voice, aiming his Evrogun once more.
âAndate allâinferno, Evro-jerks!â
âFor Yostlyâs sake! What now?!â screamed Zargon.
Duck Avenger gasped. All the soldiers around him were lifted gingerly into the air, as if by magic, then they collided head-first with one another, smushed together into a ball shape, and flung into the fountain. Water splashed out all over the floor. âWhat the great honkâŠ?â Duck Avenger breathed.
Revealing herself from behind a planter, her eyes glowing gray, was Feli, disguised as her own superhero persona, known as Magia. Her costume was almost identical to his own and he couldnât help but sigh in relief and smile seeing his goddaughter come to his rescue.
Zargon slowly rose up from the pool and shook the water from his head.
âWho wants some more?â Magia threatened, a ball of magic growing in her palm.
Zargon growled low and deep. âThis isnât over, Earthlings. Retreat!â The Evronians crawled out of the fountain and zoomed away on their discs, crashing into the glass ceiling and sending tiny shards falling near Duck Avenger and Magia.
Eyes returning to normal, Magia walked up to her godfather and they both watched the shards tinkle on the tile, the light reflecting them in a manner reminiscent of many little twinkle lights on a Christmas tree.
â...the mall cops are gonna be mad at the mess we made, arenât they?â said Magia.
Duck Avenger rubbed his neck. âUsually theyâre not, as long as theyâre safe from the threat. And if theyâre not,â he leaned in close to Magia, âI charge the damages to Uncle Scrooge.â
Magia put a hand on her heart, a wide, surprised smile across her beak. âAnd you get away with that?â
Duck Avenger cracked an innocent grin. âPerhaps Iâll tell you more later.â He wrapped his arms around Magia. âIâm so glad youâre okay. I donât know what I wouldâve done if they hurt you.â
âThanks for coming to our rescue, Duck Avenger,â she replied, nuzzling into the hug.
âThanks for the bailout, Magia. Letâs go home.â
âThatâs right! You still owe me some hot cocoa!â she said, skipping toward the nearest exit.
âYeah, and a talk about your language,â said Duck Avenger, following after and sending a knowing look her way,
âYou...understood that?â Magia shrunk a little bit. âYou wonât tell PapĂ and Papai, will you?â
