alteans having the ability to rcta was so unexplored im ngl despite being one of the more fascinating abilities they have....like how much can they change their body???? 😭😭😭😭😭😭 its implied that its not alchemy related since coran can do it too
So Alteans actually used to have a lot more diverse markings (I think some of these are biracial Alteans, but still). Which suggests that only a select piece of Altean culture survived — Allura’s culture (you must remember that a planet is huuuge) most likely; the (assumedly) dominant culture. So perhaps there’s more to their alchemy than the survivors are privy to… Different branches, that is.
Yes, it’s a shame we don’t see Allura and Coran do the chameleon thing so much. I do think part of that stems from Allura being a head-on fighter and Coran being support — they don’t rely on scarcity the way, say, Ezor does. But still, it’s all deeply under-explained. However, we do know that Allura can also augment her skeleton (somehow). Not sure if that process is scientific or if Alfor added metal extensions, because while Coran and Haggar are able to turn their skin purple, we never see them grow in height. (I don’t think Haggerva would’ve been averse to such experimentation, but,)
I’ve also seen a lot of people suggest Alteans were colonisers alongside the Galra, which is silly to me. Them being chameleons suggests they evolved from prey. Natural selection would’ve guaranteed a loss of that ability if there was no longer a use for it — given how keenly Alteans were hunted after Zarkon’s declaration, I don’t know how amiss it would be to claim them victims of racial persecution *prior* to the genocide too.
Also, the Alteans are not the only alchemists. The Olkari and the Balmerans perform a kind of alchemy too — and Haggar centralises the practice with Druidry. Narti is an alchemist as well. Of sorts. I think it’s all quintessence manipulation laundered through unique culture/custom.
It’s also possible that the chameleon ability has been… domesticated, over time. Like what we see with Allura is a *tamer* version of what once was. Idk, just spitballing. Thanks a ton for the ask!
