Paradjanov’s love of folk culture is something that, you know, I can really relate to. And his films are very inspiring because of how much he dives into the details of folk culture.”

“It’s called “She-Butterfly”, and […] What I think what’s really cool about this is that this is a really fascinating folk horror movie, that has stuff that is not part of the American tropes of vampires. And the vampire kind of looks like a werewolf, which is, by the way, very consistent with Serbian folklore. To me it’s interesting to consider, yeah, Orlok looks different than Bela Lugosi or Christopher Lee or Frank Langella, but he also doesn’t look like a werewolf. And, yes, we drink blood from the chest because that’s the [Balkan and Slavic] folklore […] But no one is worrying about his soul turning into a butterfly, because that’s doesn’t make sense with this movie. But it’s a very naive movie but sometimes the simplicity of the filmmaking makes it quite terrifying.”
