After Jason's death,  it began Batman's hunt to find the Joker. The Joker thought it was just a game, but for Batman it was the final challenge: Joker would die at his hands, and he would hand himself over to the United Nations for killing an ambassador.

When he finally found him, he came close to killing him, before Ray Palmer and Zatanna stopped him.

When Ray tells him that he is at risk of crossing a line and never being able to go back from that, Batman replies that he no longer cares about anything, neither the cowl nor the mission, and that he would be happy to die avenging his son.

Worried and not wanting to lose one of the symbols of the League, Zatanna decide to erase his memory, as she had already done before (coff...the whole thing with Doctor Light...coff...)

Zatanna makes him forget Robin, but thus she also makes him forget Dick, and as a precaution she ensures that Dick no longer has contact with Batman upon his return to Earth. It can't last forever but Zatanna needs time to improve the spell and make Bruce forget the reason for his pain.

She hadn't counted on the fact that the spell would start doing its own thing or that it would slowly devour all of Bruce's memories, wearing away at his mind, until only Batman remains, the one he always feared others would see in him. Zatanna has realized all of Bruce's fears, and Gotham now fears its protector even more. And Dick, hearing the news from Gotham, wants to return, but Zatanna made him believe that Bruce hated him and blamed him for Jason's death, and Dick's anger and grief never allowed him to take the first step.
