Put you on "clustrmaps" googling the former addresses of your childhood neighbors. Looking at the names associated with those houses in the past.

Then going to people lookup sites and finding out who is associated with certain names who lived there.

Tracking themdown on facebook especially if they have distinctive names and are possible to find at all.

Cold writing them on facebook messenger and asking if they're related to those people who lived at that place at that time. Inviting them to the damn memorial as part of that offer, with a pardon-me-if-this-isn't-you.

I guess people might have been even braver to do this pre-internet, knowing how difficult information was to find, and feeling less ashamed about doing the hunting-down-in-phone-books sort of trek. It was probably called determination if done for a good cause?
