We need to reflect on our nation’s past and how the enslavement of human beings continues to affect us today.  

3 Ways You Can Acknowledge & Promote Healing from our history of Slavery: 1. Reflect upon the ideas of mind that prompted light colored human beings to enslave dark skinned peoples. 2. What stories that justified enslavement of Africans remain with us today? What is their impact on the life conditions and experiences of people of African descent in America? 3. What emotions arise when we you reflect upon Slavery’s horrors?  Where in the body are they? Acknowledge them.

In your work, academic major, or extracurricular activity, consider: is there a common goal that the group of people is trying to achieve? 3. Think about 2 of your friends or close ones, what do you have in common with each of them? What do they have in common with each other (regardless of whether they know each other)? What do all 3 of you have in common? Together, do your individual strengths make something greater?

Julia asks that our entertainment and media industry reflect positive and uplifting messages.

3 Ways You Can Contribute to Positive Messaging: 1. Think about the last feel-good movie you saw.  Reflect on whether the film truly represented the physical diversity of our nation and our world. 2. Among millennials almost 50 percent of Americans are of color.  Do you see such diversity in the media?  Reflect upon why or why not?   3. Discuss with a friend why it is important to see physical diversity in our media.

3 Ways You Can Train Your Awareness To Override Presumptions: 1. Ask questions with curiosity, not pre-judgements (ie: try not to “know the answer already”). 2. In conversation, with a new acquaintance or old friend, notice whether you are putting efforts into guarding yourself or being yourself. 3. Smile, every morning and before going to sleep. Train your muscles, which in turn with train your awareness, to smile.

3 Ways You Can Create A World Without Borders: 1. Think about where your computer has traveled. Where was it designed? Manufactured? Assembled? Shipped? Processed? How many people or countries have been involved? 2. Think about where you currently live; your city, town, and/or street. Now consider where you lived before, and before that, and then before that. Ask your parents if need be and think about the journey you and your family have been on. 3. Finally, consider with #2: have you always been welcomed?  Reflect: why or why not?
