This past Monday was Indigenous People's Day, and one of our Vision2040 videos contains an excellent explanation by Johnny Buck, co-founder of Native Youth Leadership Alliance, helping Native American youth create community based change. His thoughts on ‪#‎sustainable‬communities by 2040 challenge us to move forward in changing the current state of our society. ‪#‎BreakingBias‬ ‪#‎Native‬ ‪#‎NativeYouth‬ ‪#‎Vision2040‬

Be More America is a nonprofit, serving mission-driven organizations to understand unconscious bias, its causes, its impacts on business decision making, and specific tools to reduce it. Our content and interventions are rooted in leading neuroscience and social psychology.Our goal is to enable mission-driven organizations to fully embody their purpose to do good at home and in the world. Currently, Be More America develops in-person and online training for physicians and other doctors to reduce their unconscious bias and provide adequate healthcare for all. Hey, Selam the Intern here! It’s almost 11pm on a Sunday right now, and I have some posts planned for tomorrow, but I couldn’t wait--I’m excited for the week (and the month) to come, and here’s why you should be, too!

We have lots of things to share with you at Be More--news on the progress and challenges of the racial inequality field, how to check your own unconscious bias, uplifting stories, and coverage of tragic and controversial news. We’ve decided to start sharing on a regular schedule, so you can stay up to date with the goings on in the world--beginning tomorrow at noon!

Mindfulness and Active Thinking

Tuesday is when the week really gets going. Pause for a moment each evening at 6pm to remember what’s really important, with the weekly Be More America Tuesday blog post. We’ll share blog posts and news from the bemoreamerica.org website, including posts and important insights by founder and CEO Anurag, COO Vasudha, and our Social Media Intern, Selam. Life can be busy--but let’s not let it get the best of us. 

Envision the Future

Be More America combines practical action with visionary goals--and keeping sight of the vision is just as important as working hard on our short term goals. Weekends are for setting the meticulous bits of work aside, and thinking (between resting) about long term goals, and reviewing past accomplishments.

Johnny challenges us to bring educated about each other in moving forward to develop a beloved and sustainable community.  

How You Can Develop a Beloved and Sustainable Community: 1. Awareness is the first step to further sustainability.  What habits do you find the most difficult to change?   2. Interconnection.  Look at your next meal.  Think about all the places, people, and the natural elements across the world that enabled this meal. 3. Try this!  Next time you eat an apple or another fruit, chew every bite focusing on each and every flavor in the mouth.

3 Ways You Can Play a Part in Decreasing Incarceration:  

1. Beliefs. There is no evidence that Black or Latino people commit more crime than any other racial or ethnic groups.  Yet the presumption of criminality follows them.  Reflect upon a time when you participated in such stereotyping.  What were you believing? 2. Fear.  Over 60 million people in the United States have a criminal record, mostly for non-violent and petty offenses.  We are the largest incarcerator of human beings in the world, more than every authoritarian nation in the world.  In a democratic and free country, what prompts such fear for you? Where does that fear come from? 3. Listen.  What does the fear say?  Is it based on a factual real life personal experience? Or is it based on a rumor or stereotype?

Tiffany challenges us to be courageous in developing our empathy as human beings.

3 Ways You Can Develop & Utilize Empathy: 1. When anger arises, what would it take for you take deep inhales before you speak? 2. “The only person you have control over is yourself.”  Does this ring true for you?  Why or why not? 3. When you see another’s suffering - do you wish for their suffering to go away or do you feel bad that they are suffering? That’s the difference between empathy and pity.

We need to reflect on our nation’s past and how the enslavement of human beings continues to affect us today.  

3 Ways You Can Acknowledge & Promote Healing from our history of Slavery: 1. Reflect upon the ideas of mind that prompted light colored human beings to enslave dark skinned peoples. 2. What stories that justified enslavement of Africans remain with us today? What is their impact on the life conditions and experiences of people of African descent in America? 3. What emotions arise when we you reflect upon Slavery’s horrors?  Where in the body are they? Acknowledge them.
