You ever feel really uninspired, so you try to write about hair dryers, and you just keep pushing yourself through it to get back in the motion of writing, but then you publish it on the internet?

"Do not eat." -- On a slip of paper in a stereo box, referring to the styrofoam packing.

"Do not eat if seal is missing." -- On said seal.

"Warning: May cause drowsiness." -- On a bottle of Nytol, a brand of sleeping pills.

"Warning: Misuse may cause injury or death." -- Stamped on the metal barrel of a .22 calibre rifle.

"Do not use orally after using rectally." -- In the instructions for an electric thermometer.

"Not to be used as a personal flotation device." -- On a 6x10 inch inflatable picture frame.

"Do not put in mouth." -- On a box of bottle rockets.

"Remove plastic before eating." -- On the wrapper of a Fruit Roll-Up snack.

"Not dishwasher safe." -- On a remote control for a TV.

Vor ein paar Monaten sprang mir eine doppelseitige Werbung ins Auge, die von der Tabakindustrie geschaltet wurde. Es war ein Aufbäumen gegen die “Schockbilder” auf Zigarettenschachteln. Argumentiert wurde mit Bevormundung und Freiheit. Neben einer Packung Zigaretten mit Raucherlungenfoto stand eine Colaflasche mit dem Aufdruck einer adipösen Frau, ein Bier mit einem Foto eines aufgedunsenen Alkoholikers, Pommes und andere fetthaltige Produkte mit ähnlichen Hinweisen.

Ich finde das gut. Bilder von fetten Kindern, amputierten Gliedmaßen und schlechter Haut auf Burgerverpackungen, Schokoladentafeln und Haribotüten.

Ich rauche selbst, mal mehr, mal weniger, und bin deswegen von der Entscheidung der EU-Gesundheitsminister betroffen. Sollte das EU-Parlament dem Entwurf zustimmen werden Mentholzigaretten verboten und Schockbilder auf Zigarettenpackungen auch in Deutschland Realität. Mir ist das relativ egal. Kürzlich verbrachte ich ein verlängertes Wochenende in London und fühlte mich von den dort bereits gesetzlich vorgeschriebenen Bildern weder bevormundet, noch in meinem Tabakkonsum beeinflusst. 

Aber wenn der Staat seine Bürger schon vor potentiell tödlichen Fehlentscheidungen schützen will, dann bitte vor allen. Tabakkonsum ist zweifellos gefährlich und Menschen sterben daran. Aber fetthaltige Lebensmittel sind mindestens genauso gefährlich. Menschen sterben täglich an den Folgen - und es werden immer mehr. 

In Kanada ist das Kenntlichmachen von fetthaltigen Lebensmitteln durch denen auf Zigarettenpackungen ähnlichen Warnhinweisen bereits im Gespräch. Ich finde nur konsequent. Sofern es den Entscheiden tatsächlich um das Wohl der Bevölkerung geht.
