April 22nd, 2025: A new minarai has emerged! Umemai (梅豆衣) of Umeno (梅乃) in Kamishichiken has formally begun her journey to becoming a maiko! She is the first debut for Umeno in 6 years and will help to bolster the Kamishichiken maiko numbers. Her misedashi will take place tomorrow ^^ Image is courtesy of Yuko Umeno.

Yojimbo Trilogy
So I had a little marathon over the weekend watching the Japanese Classics, which still left quite an impression on me few days later.
Yojimbo (1961)
Sanjuro (1962)
Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo (1970)
Zatoichi is the first Japanese Classics that I ever watched, so when I first watched “Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo” without ever watching “Yojimbo” to know more about his background, I supported Zatoichi instead as he appears more friendly and trustworthy as opposed to the grumpy and drunkard Yojimbo.
But after watching “Yojimbo” and “Sanjuro”, I began to view his character differently when I rewatched “Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo”, understanding where he came from and why he is the way he is.
However, there’s something different about him in this film as compared to the first two and I don’t mean his appearance. In the first two, he strikes me as a more calm, wise and experienced warrior who seems to know what he’s doing most of the time, earning the admiration and respect of his allies and enemies.
Even though he drinks a lot, he still appears to be in control of himself, unlike in the third film where he seems to be more reckless and grouchy, picking a fight with Zatoichi while he’s drunk and seems to be more emotionally unstable. I wonder if it got to do with the beautiful woman he fancied, Umeno.
The dancing fans of Geiko and Maiko of Kamishichiken are made with a similar design, with 2 colored bands made of 3 lines each, over a gold background. However, where the Maiko’s dancing fans have red lines, the Geiko’s dancing fans have green lines.

I’m keeping a constant eye out for anything about Umehina. I really do hope she gets to have her Erikae, but I can’t say it looks good considering Umechie, Umesana and Umechisa left. I’m so sad abt it :(

I've been a huge fan of geiko and maiko culture since I was little, they were just so pretty! I was really excited to see posts from okiyas across Japan! This is Maiko Umehina san of the @umeno-okiya. She is a personal favorite of mine!
