the green-cheeked parakeet, typically known as the green-cheeked conure in captivity, is a small parrot native to argentina, bolivia, brazil, and paraguay. wild green cheek conures have their namesake green cheeks, and green wings and upperparts; from forehead to nape, they are a full brown. they also have a dull red belly and tail; juvenile birds are similar to adults, but lack the red coloration. a popular bird in aviculture, breeders have also developed many color mutations not found in the wild, such as ‘pineapple’, a variant with more bright yellow & red coloration. in the wild, they inhabit lowland woodlands and forests, and subtropical forests as high in altitude as 2,000m (6,600 ft). in the wild, their diet consists of fruit, seeds, and flowers, supplemented with leaves and nectar. green-cheeked parakeets can live for 25-30 years, but sadly, even in captivity, their lifespans are often shortened by poor breeding and/or improper care. they are playful, social birds that live in gregarious flocks in the wild, and need daily exercise and playtime in captivity.
