There is a spectrum of abuse that occurs in high control groups. Not all groups are ‘dangerous’ some are extremely dangerous.
The more extreme the group, the stronger the methods used.
To control a person is to establish power over them. Sexual abuse/assualt doesn’t need to be used to do this. Other means and methods are used.

There are various forms of programming. For example, cults/abusive groups use both forms of conditioning in their programming of followers.
