Some semi-coherent thoughts on people advocating for censorship and harassment online (especially in fandom spaces) as an ex-Jehovahโs Witnesses.
The Watchtower engages heavily in thought control, and has strict rules on fiction. Enjoying any fantasy or piece of media that โglorifies ungodly behaviorโ directly reflects the morals and desires of the member, or inevitably will. And at some point, they will be compelled to act upon that desire.
If you play violent video games, youโre a bad influence on others and may become violent irl. Watching soap operas and reading romance novels are the same as โcommitting adultery in your heart.โ Youโre not keeping your thoughts pure for Jehovah if you fantasize about a kinky, erotic scenario, and you will eventually enact it in real life. Youโre too weak to resist, after all. And if you donโt believe that, youโre just committing the sin of โindependent thinking.โ
Maybe itโs useful to ask: who is benefited by a demand for purity? Who is benefited when shaming and fear mongering are used in an attempt to stop people from engaging in the โwrongโ kind of fantasy or reading the โwrongโ kind of story? Does it actually make the world safer? Are there individuals in power who might find that treatment of people useful? To what end?
"Once you understand it, everything make sense.

ANDREW DOYLE: New "Misinformation" Plan By Government Advisors Is Deeply Orwellian
Andrew Doyle: This is an attack on democracy. Ultimately, that's what it is.
Toby Young: I'm Lord Young, General Secretary of the Free Speech Union. My guest on the Free Speech Union podcast this week is comedian and free speech campaigner Andrew Doyle. Like me, he's sounding the alarm about a little-noticed report. Commissioned by the Government Office for Science, it contains some alarmingly Orwellian proposals to stop us spreading what its authors call misinformation, but what most of us would call telling the truth.
Doyle: Phrases like, Imane Khelif is a man, that's the boxer who won in the women's boxing category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which is almost certainly a statement of fact, is now in a column as an example of misinformation.
Young: And their ideas about how the government might psychologically reprogram us so we won't believe our lying eyes are even more alarming. We'll also be discussing government proposals to push us towards so-called trusted news sources, like the BBC and Channel 4 News, and why Andrew has joined fellow comedy writer Graham Linehan in exile in Arizona.
"The term brainwashing is often associated with overtly coercive behaviors, exemplified by the image of a prisoner at the hands of abusive jailers. With social influence, the agents of influence are viewed as friends or mentors, which causes people to lower their defenses. Social influence gives the illusion of control. The individual believes he is making his own choices, when in fact he has been influenced to disconnect his own critical and decision-making capacity.
SINGERโS CONDITIONS FOR THOUGHT REFORM
Gain control over a personโs time, especially his thinking time and physical environment.
Create a sense of powerlessness, fear and dependency, while providing models that demonstrate the new, ideal behavior.
Manipulate rewards, punishments and experiences to suppress the recruit รญs former social behavior and attitudes, including the use of altered states of consciousness to manipulate experience.
Manipulate rewards, punishments and experiences to elicit behavior and attitudes desired by leadership. Create a tightly controlled system with a closed system of logic, wherein dissenters feel their questioning indicates something inherently wrong with them.
Keep recruits unaware and uninformed that there is an agenda to control or change them. Thought-reform is impossible when a person is functioning at full capacity with informed consent."
Freedom of Mind by Steven Hassan. The Singer mentioned here is Margaret Singer, referencing her book Cults In Our Midst. (bolded by me)

It's not easy, turning that fear energy into some other kind of energy, but I have to do it every few minutes or I'll be hyperventilating. I know I'm not alone. That's the glue that keeps me together. We're social creatures, so I'm overwhelmed when I hear that someone's been killed. Or another one caught with child pornography. I would like a weapon, sirs. No. I have to control my thoughts or they'll control me. I wish I had been taught that in elementary school.
Thought Control. Hypnotic and suggestive strategies that induce an altered state of consciousness are often used to reprogram peopleโs thoughts and memories. Other techniques to induce thought control range from hours of tedious, monotonous lectures several times a week where members must memorize and regurgitate the correct answers, to audible prayers, chanting, speaking in tongues, and meditation, in ways that reduce critical thinking. Eyes-closed visualizations and guided meditation techniques can allow a group to insert thoughts and beliefs into their members.
The ideology of authoritarian groups is typically all-or-nothing, black-and-white, us-versus-them, and good-versus-evil. Members believe the doctrine to be the ultimate โtruthโ that is sacred and scientific. Members learn โthought-stoppingโ techniques to keep themselves pure and resist evil thoughts. The language system of closed groups can be an actual dialect not shared by outsiders. โThought-terminating clichรฉsโ make complex ideas into platitudinous buzzwords known only by other members. Not all groups give members new names; however, when they do, it is a powerful technique that supports changes in the personโs identity.
Hardcore Leftist ideology and freedom of speech are (surprise!) apparently incompatible. Academiaโs attraction to state/institutional control of thought โfor the greater goodโ has turned higher education in America into a bad joke.
Alex Shieh, a student journalist at Brown University, asked questions about administrators' spending. Then the university investigated him.
