There's a lot of rumblings on Tweeter Local about the identity of the so-called Nighthawk Killer… or Hatchetfield Nighthawker… or whatever we want to call him.
Grace and Steph both know the truth but now they have to give their testimony under oath. They know they have to lie, but how far are they willing to push a fictional narrative of Pete's death?
While I couldn’t be sure my dad had known about the burner, I moved it around a lot anyway. It was virtually never in my bedroom, unless I was actively using it. After everything had gone down with Max, still phone-less thanks to my grades, I’d pooled my birthday money and blown it on a refurbished smartphone - one my dad couldn’t track if the geeks and I had to talk about the old Waylon Place. It wasn’t perfect: it only worked with wifi, but using it and the encrypted Message in a Bottle app, opened my life back up again. Enough public places had hot spots in town for me to message my friends most of the time. Does anyone actually call each other anymore anyway?
Not that I have anyone to call now.
So I sat on the couch most of the night, using only the thin pashmina throw for warmth, room dark, TV off.
I guess I looked at my phone a bit. A lot.
And when Gary arrived bright and early (I forgot he has a key) I bolted upstairs straight through my bedroom and into the bathroom. I threw the water on, and have been sitting here since, typing this out. If the police ever find it, I guess it’ll make for a pretty compelling case against me. Maybe that’s why I’m writing it down. Maybe I want to get caught.
