HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS
mateo chavez x fem!reader + brother!brian g. #requested
summary: Mateo was supposed to be just your brotherâs friend, especially since your brother constantly made it clear he didnât want anything to happen between the two of you, but your heart wanted something else.
*mateo still plays for chivas in this btw*
âtheres a million reasons why i should give you up, but the heart wants what it wants.â
âYouâre gonna have to put me on, big broâ you joked with your brother, Brian, as you scrolled through pictures of his soon to be teammates.
Brian had just transferred to Las Chivas about a month ago, a couple days ago being his first game. With this transfer came more opportunities, like his transfer to the Mexican National Team which was just recently approved and finalized.
âstop getting ideas, im not even gonna let you get near themâ Brian replied letting out a slight laugh finding you unbelievable.
âim serious, theyre cuteâ you say as you keep looking at pictures, then you stopped abruptly to look up at him. âand youâre just gonna ruin it for themâ you say with a playfully disgusted look.
his brows furrowed while his lips turned into the slightest pout and then he asked âare you my sister orâŠ.my biggest hater?â
âyour biggest supporter actuallyâ you say as you got up from the couch to embrace him in a tight hug because as much as you loved to joke with him like this, you were actually proud of him especially these days.
Mexico had been your home for a couple years now, all the summer vacations visiting your extended family here made you fall in love with it, so much so that you decided to attend school here.
Your life had been reversed now, you'd visit Chicago during breaks to see your family, or sometimes they'd come to you.
The biggest surprise though, was your brother coming to stay with you, not just for a couple of weeks, but for at least the next couple of years.
He was your older brother, but with only a two year age gap, it rarely felt that way growing up. He felt more like a twin, now it didn't help that you'd be living together.
As Brian tried his best to settle into not one but two teams, you were there listening to everything, the good and the bad.
As time went on you were glad to see your brother enjoying his new lifestyle, making friends, and growing in his career.
You heard a lot about two particular teammates of his, their names were Armando but everyone calls him Hormiga, and Mateo.
Hormiga and Mateo were also both on Chivas and the national team, allowing their bond to grow stronger everyday, with their duo quickly becoming a trio.
You loved joking with Brian telling him his friends were cute, asking him when he was finally going to have them over, to which he always answered âneverâ.
One day you went to the stadium to watch Brian play. You found yourself surprisingly not busy so you thought why not go cheer him on.
Once the game had ended you made your way down to where all the players were in search of your brother. Instead you accidentally bumped into one of his teammates, and when you turned to see who, you saw him, Mateo.
âperdonâ you both said in unison.
you froze for a bit when you recognized who it was, from the pictures. You let out a short laugh before speaking up again âno, estas bienâŠ..oye tu no eres Mateo?â You asked.
a small confused smile creeped up on his face âsiâŠâ he said, he looked like he was trying to figure out if he should recognize you from somewhere.
âsoy la hermana de Brianâ you cleared up, pointing at yourself.
immediately his expression changed with it finally clicking in his head âahh sii, si me habia contado de ti, mucho gustoâ he said as he opened his arms leaning in for a hug.
The hug was quick, a simple greeting.
Once you pulled back, you realized he really was cute. Youâd always joke with your brother about it, but youâd only ever seen him in pictures. You knew he was cute, but⊠wow.
you pulled yourself out of your own thoughts, and realized you were just standing in front of each other a little awkward so you spoke up, remembering why you were down here in the first place.
âehâŠÂżsabes adonde esta Brian?â
As soon as you asked, something behind you caught his attention, seconds later he was pointing behind you and then you heard your brother's voice.
âSo youâve metâŠâ he stated, exchanging a look with you. You tried not to laugh, knowing he was thinking about all the times youâd joked about his friends being cute.
That's all it was though, just jokes between you and your brother. You werenât actually interested in getting with any of his friends and he knew that.
âbarely, I just bumped into him looking for you,â you replied.
He looked between you both. âWellâŠMateo, my sister. Sister, Mateo.â
You both gave nervous smiles. âUn gusto. Este nunca para de hablar de ti, y de Armando⊠parecen novios los tresâ you joked.
He couldnât help but laugh. âEso es secreto,â he said, holding a finger to his lips.
Making eye contact was nerve racking, your eyes wandering everywhere until they caught a glimpse of the score on the screen, reminding you. âCongratulations on your win!â you said, looking at both of them. âEse fue un partidazo, lo hicieron muy bien,â you added with a big smile.
They both thanked you and shortly after Mateo announced he had to go, letting you know it was nice to meet you while giving you another quick hug.
Brian also had to go, to do a couple post game interviews and told you that he'd see you at home, before stepping away he placed a quick kiss on your forehead.
A while later, you were back home, chilling on your bed when you heard noise coming from the front door. You figured it was Brian, expecting him to knock on your door to let you know he was home, which he did.
But as soon as you opened the door, music began blasting throughout the house.
âte amo, estoy muy orgullosa de ti, felicidades por ganar pero baja la mĂșsica por favor, ya casi me voy a dormirâ You insisted, your hands in prayer.
he stood there with an awkward smile as all his friends came out of nowhere shouting hi at you.
it wasnât just Mateo and Armando, this was like half of his team.
you shot an angry look at him before saying hi back to everyone and congratulating them on their win.
âno te enojes, ven celebra con nosotrosâ
you werenât mad, you were just annoyed that he hadnât asked you or alerted you that half the team would be coming over, i mean this was basically a party, and you had to get up early the next morning, and you told him exactly that.
âentonces, Âżyo que hago? Âżles digo que se vayan?â
âWey, si ya estĂĄn aquĂ. Ni modo.â you replied, eyes squinted.
You saw Mateo creeping up behind him, a big grin already on his face. From what Brian had told you, Mateo found just about everything amusing, always laughing or smiling at something.
âPerdĂłn, Gutihermana, fue idea mĂa celebrar acå⊠espero no estĂ©s molesta.â he admitted
before you processed his full sentence you immediately noticed the nickname causing you to laugh for a second.
âÂżgutihermana? que pedoâ
Mateo and Brian abruptly burst into laughter, and now you were staring at them like you were watching two crazy people, which⊠you were.
you ended up just closing your door on them, it was too late for all that nonsense. you tried your best to fall asleep but all the commotion outside of your room wouldnât let you. You decided to get up and go see what the fun was all about.
you stopped in your tracks not long after stepping foot outside your room as you heard âoye Brian ya se porque no me enseñabas fotos de tu hermanaâ
you furrowed your brows, and you stood there, you were not fully out of the small hallway that follows after your room, so they couldnât know you were listening.
âqueâ you heard Brian reply
âneta que sacĂł los mejores genes, a ti que te paso weyâ
You could hear them all laughing, and you couldnât lie, it was a little funny, so you laughed to yourself as well.
âno pero enserio esta bien guapa tu hermana weyâ mateo admitted, there was something almost amazed in his voice, making you feel your cheeks grow a bit hot.
You couldnât see Brianâs face but you could already imagine it, especially once you heard the rest of his friends.
âay wey ese se ve que te va matarâ
âmateo duerme con un ojo abierto esta nocheâ
âque wey, Âżno te gustarĂa tenerme como cuñado?â you heard Mateo say through laughs, causing you to let out an airy laugh, not expecting that at all.
âno wey, ya. como que cuñado, espero que sea broma.â Brian replied and they all began to laugh it off, that being your cue to finally show yourself, once they saw you it got a bit awkward but you pretended not to notice.
Mateo was the first to say anything, calling your name. âTe debo una.â
âÂżPor quĂ© o quĂ©?â you asked.
âpor invadir tu casa puesâ
You shook your head, a laugh escaping your lips. âNada que ver, Brian pudo haber dicho que no,â you said, then shifting your focus to your brother. âMaldito.â
It didnât take long before you went back into your room, realizing you were in a room full of cute football players while still in your pajamas. It was getting a little hot in there, and not just because of your pajamas.
After that night, his friends came over more often, but rarely as a big group, which you were glad about. You became more comfortable around his friends and teammates the more you saw them at your house and at games. It just wasnât as awkward anymore, and you were able to hold small conversations with them without thinking too much about it. Other than that, though, they were still just Brianâs teammates, people you thought were cool, and some you found very cute, but that quickly became a passing thought.
one day were in your room cleaning with music playing in the background when you heard a knock at the door. You opened it expecting your brother, but instead found Mateo standing there.
âAh⊠hola,â you said, slightly surprised to see him. You gave him a small smile, waiting for him to speak.
âÂżJunior H?â he asked while pointing to the inside of your room.
âsii, Âżte gusta?â you replied with a slight smile appearing on your face, this was quite unexpected for you.
and then there was that big grin again.
âno manches, es mi artista favoritoâ
You both began sharing your favorite Junior H songs. Without really thinking about it, you walked back into your room and sat down on your bed, continuing the conversation as Mateo remained standing at the doorway until you eventually told him he could come in.
The conversation eventually evolved into your overall music taste, and you soon realized you had a lot of music in common. Your conversation was soon interrupted when you heard Brian yelling out Mateos name.
you both froze with small smiles on your face before Mateo laughed, quickly getting up âeste wey me va matar, le dije que iba al bañoâ
âpuerta equivocadaâ you joked, earning a small smile from him before he began to walk towards your door.
âbueno, ahi te veoâ he said, holding up three, to which you nodded your head and then he was out.
immediately you heard your brother questioning him outside your room, and shortly after, your door opened, he ready to question you as well.
âwhat the fuck?â he spit out, eyebrows furrowed showing confusion.
âwhat?â you replied as you remained sitting on your bed, also confused.
âÂżque hacia en tu cuarto?â he asked, fingers pointing behind him, referring to Mateo.
ârelax hermanito, solo estuvimos hablando de mĂșsicaâ you answered.
âmy friends are not to be in your room.â he stated, his tone was serious.
âAre you⊠gatekeeping your friends?â you joked, finding his seriousness quite hilarious.
âA mĂ no me importa que hables con mis amigos, tĂș lo sabes, pero tampoco te me quedes tan a solas con ellos, its weird.â
âChillâŠsolo era MateoâŠâ you said, giving him an amused look.
âSĂ. Exactamente.â He pressed his lips together, giving you a pointed look.
later that night, you were scrolling on your phone when you a notification from
The message caught you off guard. It was around one in the morning when Mateo suddenly sent you a link, and you hadnât even remembered when the two of you had become mutuals on Instagram.
when you opened the link, it was a playlist with a bunch of songs, including some of the ones you has spoken about a couple hours ago.
you clicked back to your chat and sent him a question mark.
estuve pensando en ti, hay algunas que creo que te gustarĂan.
You smiled to yourself at the gesture, thinking back to when he had sat on your bed talking about music with you. There were a few artists he had mentioned that you hadn't heard of before, and now, as you scrolled through the playlist, their names began popping up. The playlist was a mix of genres making you laugh as each song was a different vibe from the other.
After that night, the two of you slowly grew closer, randomly replying to each otherâs stories, finding each other whenever you were all out together, and whenever you made it to one of their games, you could always see his face light up at the sight of you.
You always thought he was attractive, without a doubt, but you were never really interested in dating your brotherâs friends. Even then, you knew Brian would be completely against it. You knew the lifestyle they lived, how busy they all were, and how easily things could get complicated. You valued the friendship they had, and more importantly, your relationship with your brother, and you wouldnât want to make things weird.
But as time went on, you found yourself growing attracted to more than just his looks. You liked his personality, his style, his goals, the way he listened, and obviously, that smile of his.
You werenât oblivious to it. You could feel the tension between the two of you, one you both tried to conceal whenever you were around your brother, which was always, knowing heâd ruin the mood if he noticed.
you tried your best to act like he was just another one of your brotherâs friends, like Armando, Daniel, Jordan, etc., and you believed it for a while but, you never felt the way you felt with Mateo around his other friends.
And small hints further proved his feelings towards you, especially when they came through Brian, always leaving you with butterflies in your stomach.
once when you were discussing places to eat at, he mentioned a restaurant then followed by saying âme la recomendĂł Mateo, dijo que te gustarĂa, que venden de esas cosas que te gustanâ causing your eyes to light up slightly as you tried to hide your smile.
or recently a couple hours before a game âMateo asked if youâre going to be there,â he said, his tone laced with curiosity.
âno lo se, estoy muy ocupada hoyâ you replied, trying to act oblivious to his curiosity.
but then he asked âÂżnada esta pasando verdad entre ustedes, verdad? siento que siempre te anda mencionandoâ
you denied it because technically, nothing was happening, but that didnât mean there was nothing there.
seconds later you were opening your phone to Mateos contact.
you felt your stomach flip for a slight second, all you could do was like his message and wish him luck tonight.
the game had ended in their loss, you were on your way home when you saw the score, 2-1. you knew in a few hours youâd be met with a disappointed Brian.
you were working on a few assignments at your desk when you were distracted by a knock at your door.
âentra, Briâ you yelled out.
But instead of him walking in, you heard another knock. Wondering if you had accidentally locked your door, you got up to check, only to find the doorknob turned freely, the door opening as soon as you twisted it.
before you could say anything, your eyes widened, as you realized who was really at your door. Mateo.
he was leaning his forehead against your door as he waited for you to open, causing him to slightly lean forward when you did. You extended your arms to make sure he wouldnât fall.
and when you were sure he was standing still you began to lower your arms, only his hands stopped yours midway. You were now standing in front of each other, hand in hand, and your heartâŠ.you could feel it intensifying immensely.
âHey⊠¿quĂ© haces aquĂ?â you asked. His eyes remained fixed on your hands before slowly lifting to meet yours. He looked beat.
His hair was messy, he was in his post-game outfit, his eyes dull, and that beautiful smile of his, nowhere to be found.
You began looking around, knowing Brian would be extremely confused if he were to come across this scene, and if you were being honest, so were you.
he finally spoke up, his voice sounding low and defeated. âno pasa nada, ya le dije que me iba que solo pase a recoger algo.â You figured he was explaining the lie heâd told your brother, not actually telling you why he was here.
âÂżY por quĂ© estĂĄs tan agĂŒitado? ÂżQuĂ© pasĂł?â you asked, your voice full of worry, as you slipped your dominant hand from his faint grip, bringing it up to his face. Your thumb gently brushed over his cheek before you slowly pushed his hair away from his face.
This was the first time youâd ever been this touchy with each other, yet somehow, it felt so natural.
âjuguĂ© de la verga, netaâ he spoke as he shook his head left to right. Telling you how he felt responsible for the loss. He let out a sharp breath. âSolo tenĂa que verte.â
that caused your heart to beat rapidly, you were glad he couldnât feel it.
you began to take a couple steps backwards, having him follow you as your other hands still held onto each other, as he made his way past the door he slowly closed it with his free hand.
You sat him on the edge of your bed, while you were standing in front of him as he looked up at you, explaining what had happened during todayâs game and why he was so upset.
âte dije que jugarĂa mejor si tĂș estuvieses ahĂ,â he said, his lips forming a pout.
You shot him a sly smile before becoming a little more serious. âNo importa si jugaste mal, lo que importa es que lo intentaste. Solo fue un partido de muchĂsimos en los que siempre lo has hecho bien.â
âAdemĂĄsâŠâ you added, returning to playing with his hair. âAhora sĂ estoy aquĂ.â
The eye contact was stronger than even, his hands rested on your hips, pulling you closer as he slowly stood to meet you, now towering over you a bit.
You were now so close you could smell his cologne, hear his breathing, and feel the warm air escaping from his slightly parted lips.
You both stared at each otherâs lips before looking back into each otherâs eyes. The same thought seemed to cross both your minds: Should we do this?
Eventually, you both gave in to the craving youâd been putting aside for the past couple of months. You had tried to respect your brotherâs boundaries, but in that moment, you didnât seem to care anymore.
the kiss was slightly desperate, but sweet, passionate. Your hands sliding into his hair while his hands made their way back down to your waist, turning you so now your back was to your bed.
you slowly began lowering yourself onto your bed, so you were now laying down while he hovered over you, still kissing you.
He pulled away from the kiss for a second, letting himself admire you as you both caught your breath. He slightly cupped your face, his eyes stuck on yours âte ves guapisima.â
âno sabes cuanto he querido estoâ it didnât come out as a full sentence, instead each word was followed by kisses scattered all over, making you giggle, and him as well.
he fell to your side on his back before he fixed himself, turning over a little bit to face you, you did the same.
once your eyes met again a smile crept up on both your faces, you hadnât expected to be in this position tonight but you werenât complaining. Something about his face made you feel warm, and now that it was finally just the two of you alone on your bed, you thought you could get used to this.
your hands made it back to his soft warm face, you had your thinking face on and he noticed.
âÂżen que piensas?â he asked softly.
you hesitated before speaking up âsolo queâŠ.no se si estamos pensando lo mismoâ
âaverâŠ.que piensas, te digo si es lo mismo.â
âMe gustas⊠pero no soy de cosas casual.â you admitted.
âestamos en la misma sintonĂa,â he replied with a soft smile as he rubbed his thumb against your knuckles, then bringing your hand up to place a kiss on it.
You felt your heart melt, knowing you both wanted the same thing. Somehow, it eased your mind.
Obviously, Brian was a couple of rooms over, completely oblivious. Heâd freak out if he knew what was going on at the moment, and the thought of telling him about this wasâŠnot exactly fun. But for now, you didnât want to think about it. You still had tomorrow to talk about everything
Whatever happened next, you knew your heart had already made its choice.
