Las islas Cícladas del mar Egeo fueron colonizadas por primera vez por viajeros procedentes de Asia Menor alrededor del año 3000 a.C. y alcanzaron cierta prosperidad gracias a la riqueza de recursos naturales de las islas, como el oro, la plata, el cobre, la obsidiana y el mármol.
