Honestly, the iffy aspects of indie animation was always part of the charm.
When I engage with it, I do so understanding that this is somebody without the support of professionals or the studio system. In fact, itâs without the numbers focused studio system that lets them be unapologetically themselves.
No studio notes, no editorial mandates, no "fitting the Disney Brand." Of course, that means a lot of the faults that you mentioned yet I could never hate them.
Those rough animatics, those dodgy full animated shots and that cringe dialogue. Itâs artistry in motion. Itâs what I expect. If they improve from there, all the better.

After being made court sorcerer or something or other, Merlin has a lot of tasks away from Camelot as well as within it. Today in particular he was to meet up with some Druids for something he wouldnât yet disclose.
Merlin always with the secretsâŚ. Although Arthur understood this time â it was Druid business and if there were anyone more secretive than Merlin then it was them.
It just couldnât have come at a worse timeâŚ.
Merlin had recently revealed a secret chamber within the hall of records, wherein the knights could speak in private from any prying eyes or ears if the kingdom was ever in danger again.
However, there was a problem: it was filthy. Forget the state of the moldy old books on the shelves, there were piles of boxes and jars with who knew what inside in every corner; old records on forgotten-tables; older gems that were probably cursed â all sprinkled with a good helping of lint and cobwebs.
Honestly Arthur almost wasnât teasing when he asked if the Druid quest wasnât just an excuse for Merlin to get out of another chore. It was disgusting.
But Merlinâs duties were important, and the chamber wasnât going to clean itself.
The plan was for anything that looked useful to go into Arthurâs chambers; anything that looked cursed to stay put; and anything magic-related â that didnât look like it could put Camelot in grave peril for being removed from its nook â would go in Merlinâs room.
The only thing Merlin advised them before he left was: âDonât open the box lined with lead.â
Really, it shouldâve stayed put or gone to Merlinâs room; but somehow it ended up in Arthurâs. And one session of joking around between Gwaine, Percival, and Elyan later had it broken wide open.
Arthur was shocked when he burst into his chambers to find a goblin on his table. He drew his sword but before he could even swing, the goblin had disappeared into a small floating light. Arthur instantly lost sight of it when it flew past him.
The knights each asked if Arthur was okay when they realized it had escaped, and the King replied, âYes. Now bring me all the gold in the castle.â
They traded a look. âSire, are you sure youââ
âI am your King, and I order you to bring me all the gold; I wouldnât ask if it wasnât important.â
The knights listen.
Many many many amounts of gold later â and some knights being locked up for speaking up against the King â the goblin is feasting like a King on his throne. Because, well â having possessed Arthur â he was a King on the throne!! And he had all the gold he could ever want! It was perfect!
But then Merlin returns.
Welcomed home with the sight of Arthur sitting on his throne with a lopsided crown, coins in his mouth, surrounded by piles of gold â not to mention the remaining knightsâ worried expressions â Merlin lets out the deepest sigh heâs had in years.
He fixes everything fairly quickly â at least, quicker than last time â with the help of the knights, and all the gold was returned to their rightful places. But afterward Merlin had to have a talk with the Roundtable, and naturally it started with this:
god theres so much i love abt flare i need to ramble abt them
them being a "gemini" series skin. gemini in atrology being referred to as the two faced sign, or two natured. because thats what the skins offer you, a second face to the original frame model. then their actual astrological sign (june 15th) IS a gemini as well. AND they are nonbinary, which in some cultures is a very real and acknowledged third gender where people believe a person was born with two spiritsâthe masculine and the feminineâinhabiting one vessel. after the infestation mumbo jumbo comes lizzie, a second soul sharing one vessel.
and once/if you manage to make them understand and trust eachother they become like ying and yang, pulling in two opposite directions but able to find middle ground where they are able to fill eachothers gaps.
i personally read their conflict as an allegory for loving yourself. accepting yourself, your flaws and all the ugly parts hidden behind the beautiful ones. the animalistic rawness inside us vs the manufactured performance we put on. accepting the monster within, aknowledging the simple fact that they are there. and once you learn to live with *all* the sides of yourself, not just the socially acceptable ones nor the "good" ones and learn how to manage them thats when you will truly be at peace with yourself.
Lowkey hope DE dials back the amount of new protoframes they release, because I feel like at the current rate, there's ultimately less time and resources being spent on the og batch.
I've had this concern ever since they added the Roundtable protoframes, but at least back then, the Hex still got more conversations added for them since it didn't require any voice acting or animations, so I figured the KIM was a neat, cost-effective way of keeping us Hex enjoyers fed. But in this update, aside from the 'consent conversation', the Hex basically received 0 content (the Roundtable don't even get mentioned), which is honestly kinda sad lol.
This was less of an issue for me back when syndicates were more or less just vendor/bounty NPCs with relatively self-contained stories, but the Hex is the first syndicate I've actually gotten emotionally invested in so it's become a little harder to move on so soon. Aside from their main story relevance, I think the KIM conversations did a lot to humanize them and their predicament also made them unique. But now it feels like everyone's getting a protoframe these days as if Albrecht was handing the strain out like candy.
And while it may seem like I'm being too hasty in my concerns, given DE's track record of jumping from one shiny new toy to the next and only ever revisiting old content years after (i.e The last time we got Fortuna content was Profit Taker in 2019 and it took 6 years before we finally revisited with Vallis Undermind), you'll have to forgive me if I'm not overly optimistic.
I havenât watched the video but Iâd like to argue with this title
Itâs not that 2D is better than 3D, itâs that artistic animation will always be better than photo-realistic animation
For example, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is a better film than its predecessor Puss In Boots in terms of itâs animation. While the original spinoff leaned into the realistic style of Shrek, the sequel embraced its artistic value and created something more animated and beautiful
And both those movies are 3D animated! There is nothing wrong with CGI animation, itâs just another form of the medium. 2D animation comes with a lot of nostalgic fondness, but itâs also valued greatly for its smooth movement in hand-drawn works and the authenticity of it being drawn directly by people. This does not invalidate the use of 3D animation, however
The problem with the âlive actionâ Lion King films is that they lack the artistic value the original films had, not that theyâre three-dimensional. Animation is animation, and claiming that one form is superior than another is canonically a form of racism in The Amazing World Of Gumball (thereâs a scene where âdrawnâ people are mentioned being from a âflat countryâ and that claim is â2D-istâ)

Allow me a word of advice, as your senior. You are a mere visitor to the Roundtable, nothing more.
I don't do much interior/exterior/landscapes in my art and was accordingly advised to practice it. This has so far been my only practice.
Thoughts:
Watercolour is great and easy to use for bright colours and character colouring, but I need way more practice if I'm going to use it to colour environments, especially those as dark as the Roundtable;
Forgot the "lighter to darker shades" methodology in this one and instead started doing the darkest bits first;
Ink is great for adding details post-paint, but I ought to use a thinner quill (similar problem as with my first Melina sketch); would also allow me to add a greater amount of details;
Maybe I should get myself more colour palettes to work with, such as shades of brown, grey, green, blue, whatever.
