Teach and Learn English with memes.
It's that time of year again
I'm ready to strangle my college classmates because they're fucking dumb and a bit prejudice/racist
Why does everyone assume that because a kid's family doesn't speak English at home inherently means their English won't progress as well???
Wtf does that have anything to do with anything!!
The kid is going to be at school surrounded by English for 7-8 hours a day 5x a week for 10+ months. They'll be learning everything in English. Hell, they might even have specialized English classes meant for TESOL students! AND they'll still be surrounded by English when they go outside! Books, TV, advertisements, etc. They aren't lacking in English!
Why do they then need to go home and keep speaking English??
That's the quickest way to tell someone that their language doesn't matter and they should simply assimilate
I have a student whose parents don't speak a lick of English and yet, he and his sister are approaching fluency. They've only been here for 3 years!! The boy might be considered fluent by the end of this school year!!
I hate that soooo many of my classmates are focusing on this!
The only reason I need to know if the parents can speak English or not is to know how to help them. Do I need to call a translator? Do I need to give school info in a different language? Do they need help accessing doctors, government programs, and other English dominate things?
I just realized something about one of my students today
When I first got him in 6th grade, he had just moved to the US from Syria. He didn't know how to write in complete sentences yet and knew a handful of words in English
He's in 8th grade now
He legit told me and another teacher today, "there's no assigned seats in this class". He can write full paragraphs with minimal help
He's come so far and I'm crying now
Soooo where we are going?
FUKUOKA, JAPAN!!
I was scrolling through TikTok and a Black artist who lives in Japan posted about this program called GHJ International that was accepting applications for a 6 week, Fall 2025 Teaching Practicum Program.
In-person teaching experience? β Housing? β Food? β
Downsides are that I wouldn't get paid and I wouldn't be able to work but seeing as I have wanted to go to Japan FOR YEARS, have wanted to be a language teacher FOR YEARS, and the current state of the world is making me feel like a lot of things are Now or Never, I decided to apply immediately.
That was on 8/28 and the application closed 8/31. I interviewed with the program on 8/31, got accepted 9/5, and I'll be flying out the 17th!

Jaguar's Gone Wild!!!
HI! I'm jaguarnoire and I am going to Japan for 6 weeks. This is something I've wanted to do my whole life!!! So, I felt the need to make a side blog about it.
This is my first time going abroad since I studied abroad in Paris in 2012 and to be honest, I don't foresee me traveling after this given the state of the world and my income bracket >.<
So this is my little online time capsule and it's mostly for me but feel free to interact with me here or on my main blog(where I'm just reblogging my fandoms to keep them alive and randomly other thoughts sometimes lol).
A heartfelt congratulations to the latest graduating class of the American TESOL Institute! π Your hard work, passion, and dedication have culminated in this incredible achievement, and you are now officially certified to teach English to speakers of other languages around the world. As you embark on this exciting new chapter, you carry the tools to break down communication barriers, foster cross-cultural understanding, and open up a world of opportunities for your future students. We are immensely proud of you and can't wait to see the positive impact you'll have in classrooms near and far.
