Hi, I'm about to finish my TEFL certification course (yay), and I want to find some other TEFL/ESL teachers, talk about online teaching, how to prepare to start, things to look out for when looking for TEFL jobs online, etc.
Progress Tracking and Organising for an Online Course
So, as part of doing an online course I wanted to make sure I was organised enough with it since it's more self-directed.
First things first I'm using Google Sheets since it's easier for me to use and I can access it anywhere easily. Secondly my course has 6 modules, each with varying numbers of units. And finally, I have not chosen to go by weighting of how much information the individual units have in them.
Also overall modules are Big Modules, the ones within units are modules
So how did I make this?
Well, I started by wanting to know how many individual parts in each unit, wrote that down. Worked out total number of modules for all the units and then worked out percentage of the course each Big Module would take.
From this I wanted an idea of how many hours I should be devoting to the course since it's a 188 hour course with 20 hours in person. I decided that this would be a nice indicator for me of if I'm going over what I should be spending on each course.
To work out the percentages I used an online calculator but I could have simply put: =SUM(253/652) into the cell OR even more simply put =SUM(B2/B8) and used that. Either way it works out the same.
For the time spent I used the same percentage calculator and did a very basic "what's x% of 168" to get the answers. I could have probably done this via sheets too, but I wanted to make things as simple for myself as possible.
Then we get to the individual pages' creation next. I titled these with the shortened names I gave in the Big Modules set in the Overview page.
I included one here for an example. I have the Title, the amount of modules, the percentage of the course and the time I should be spending on this at the top as a reminder.
Then underneath I have the Big Module breakdown: how many units and how many modules per unit.
I use conditional formatting of if the number of modules per unit and number of completed modules match then it will turn the entire line green. If they don't then the parts with the two numbers in are red. This is to make it easy to distinguish visually.
The Formulae:
If they match: =$B4=$C4
If they don't match: =$B4<>$C4
And then I don't have an automation for the check boxes at the side since I enjoy clicking that button!
Now back to the original overview page!
I have a part underneath the general Big Module overview that includes amount of modules done, left to go, and percentages from these. So where am I getting this information from?
Well, the individual Big Module pages! So you know how we're calculating the amount of modules done, well I can use that. Since I know which cell this information is in (like for the example above in Grammar it's in cell C15), I can simply add these up between pages.
=SUM(Grammar!C15+Video....etc)
Including the page title and then an exclamation mark directs Sheets to look at that particular page and then that cell.
So I can work out how many modules I've done and then use a simple =SUM(652-E10) to get modules left. For the percentages it's =SUM(E10/652) and then format the cell to percentage. For the remaining percentage it's =SUM(100%-F10).
In this blog you will find the entire 150 hours Master TEFL course completely free of charge, however beware that the content found in this blog will not grant you an actual TEFL certification. If you wish to obtain a certification you will have to purchase the course and complete the quizzes and assignments that come with it.
The content you will find here is exclusively for educational purposes: whether you are considering to start a full TEFL course but you're unsure of whether it would suitable for you or not, or you want to take on an ESL job that doesn't require a TEFL certification but you'd like to have some sort of foundations before diving in, this is the right place where to start.
Unfortunately Tumblr doesn't allow to arrange posts in chronological order but don't worry, everything will be sorted very neatly in different chapters to allow a smoother experience!

1. I really am a grammar nerd fucking hell I have problems
2. The pronunciation of the ‘d’ in ‘talked’ is different to that of the ‘d’ in ‘listened’ (/t/ vs /d/) and my mind is blown, I literally never realised this and I’m p sure I never learned it in school (I'm not sure this is the case for American English or Australian English, but it definitely is in British English!)
3. English really is a clusterfuck nightmare, like I was already aware of that but jfc how do any of you learn this shit. Like sometimes it pretends to have rules and then it just. fucks you up. wow. You’ve got sink sank sunk and drink drank drunk and then think comes up to you and is like HAHA thought and then there’s verbs like to read which is like HAHA read but it’s pronounced differently. Fuck English omg.
4. The amount I am invested in the students in the classroom demonstrations is making me think this is genuinely a good career choice for me, like I’m literally sat here like “YES Phillipe I’m so proud of you you form that present perfect you precious lil cookie”
