The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinions™️".
In this case, thankfully, the Strong Opinion™️ is that those two men are ridiculous with their teeny tiny flag for ants.

I'm trying my hardest not to start another fic before finishing my first one, so I decided I'll just write a bit of them to keep them fresh in my mind once I'm done.
This is a much fluffier mpreg story I'm curious to explore
The small town of Green Hills hadn't changed much in the 8 months he had been stranded on the Mushroom Planet.
The only thing that did seem to change was there now stood a cozy coffee shop: The Mean Bean.
Smiling with pride at his sycophant's preparations, Robotnik didn’t hesitate to throw open the doors to the shop. He could vaguely hear Knuckles following behind.
The Mean Bean must have been a dream come true for Stone. It was sophisticated while being welcoming at the same time. Already, Robotnik could smell the alluring aroma of coffee and pastries.
Standing behind the counter was his awaiting henchman.
"Doctor!" Stone smiled widely before his lips faltered as he took Robotnik in.
"Papa's got a brand new 'stache!" He couldn't help but show off his new outfit. Of course, Stone had been the one to design and create his coat, but his new mustache and bald head was all Robotnik.
"I knew it!" Stone's smile sparked to life again. "I knew you'd return, sir."
Watching Stone round the counter holding a latte, Robotnik realized Stone wasn't wearing his typical black suit.
Instead, he was wearing an oversized black sweater.
And was hiding a balloon under it?
Blinking, Robotnik stared at Stone's now very round belly as the man walked carefully over to him, holding out his latte with a blinding smile. It was if the man had swallowed a watermelon whole.
Still staring at the way Stone held his stomach, Robotnik took the latte but barely registered it.
"You are with child."
Stone jumped slightly as he looked down at Knuckles.
"Uh, yes." Stone glanced between Knuckles and Robotnik. "You've brought someone with you, sir?"
Finally taking a sip of his latte, Robotnik waved a hand towards Knuckles.
"Stone, Knuckles. Knuckles, Stone."
"He is your mate," Knuckles nodded. "It is unfortunate you had to endure by yourself."
"Oh." Stone's eyes widened. "I mean, I've been lucky that the pregnancy is going smoothly."
"Still, you should have your mate by your side, especially when caring a child."
Mate.
He and Stone weren't mates.
They weren't anything more than employer and employee!
And the occasional fuck buddies.
Mostly when Robotnik was extremely stressed and needed an outlet for his anger.
Now that he thought about it, they had gone at each other like rabbits after the hedgehog had escaped. Stone had made an idiotic comment that had ended with him pinned to the wall. And then bent over the desk.
"In the truck," Robotnik felt as if he was moving through fog. "Was that...?"
"Yes."
Stone bit his lip and looked away.
"With everything going on, I forgot my birth control."
"We didn't use protection."
Stone nodded, rubbing his belly absentmindedly. Robotnik couldn't help but stare at the motion.
While he had been struggling to keep his sanity on a planet only inhabited by mushrooms, Stone had been going through a pregnancy.
Eight months.
Stone would be due in a month or less.
"Is it a boy or girl?"
Frowning, Robotnik looked at Knuckles. The red warrior had moved closer to Stone, his eyes gentler as he took in the man's belly.
"A girl." Stone smiled softly. "I was hoping we could name her together, doctor."
"Uh..."
Never in his decades on earth did Robotnik ever consider the idea of having children. Hell, Stone was the only one he had ever had sexual intercourse with!
Suddenly, Stone let out a small grunt.
"Are you all right?" Knuckles was next to him in a second, pulling a chair out for Stone. For his part, Stone looked surprised but sent Knuckles a soft smile. With a grateful sigh, he sat down.
"I'm fine. I think she wants to say hi to her daddy."
Robotnik felt the air leave his lungs as he continued to stare.
"May I?"
Knuckles had his hand raised, his normal fist unfurled as he stared up at Stone for permission.
"I suppose," Stone said slowly.
With the utmost gentleness, Knuckles rested his hand over Stone's belly. They were all completely still as the echidna stared intently.
Until he let out a loud bark of laughter.
"She is a strong one if I can feel her through my glove!" He smiled up at Stone. "You will have a very strong and healthy child."
"Thank you."
Eyes flicking back and forth between the alien and his henchman, for the first time in his life, Robotnik's mind was blank.
