How cookies can help you to get straight A’s
Christmas time is cookies time! Do you know that cookies can actually help you to become a better student? It sounds like a dream, right? Munching cookies all day long and getting straight A’s.
Ok, I have to clarify something. It is not exactly like that. However, I state the opinion that cookies can help you to become a better student. And in this post, I will tell you how.
Do you know what a good student and a baker have in common? They have a recipe. In order to make the best and most delicious cookies in town, it is inevitable for a baker to have a detailed list of all the ingredients that are required for a certain type of cookie and a structured description of what ingredient comes first, second and so on.
Even though a good student has not the fashionable hat of a baker he or she has also a kind of recipe. In the beginning of a new school year or semester, most of the students receive their syllabus or have a detailed description of their courses in a course catalogue. This is your recipe.
Every topic of your course is an ingredient that you have to possess in order to make the best cookies in town. If you don’t have flour it won’t become a cookie, right? It is your tasks as a student to collect all ingredients and put only the best in your dough. Therefore, it is not enough to take the PowerPoint slides of your lecture and review it before an exam. Get familiar with your topics. Analyze them. Criticize them. Apply them. Identify the pros and cons.
The second thing that you need in order to become a good student is the structure of your recipe. I haven’t had a subject yet where there was no structure. I think the same is true for the most of you. Is there a certain concept or model that follows a certain order? In Maths, you have to do a few steps in order to find x. In Law, you have to considerate information A, B and C before pronouncing judgement. In Biology, mitosis passes different phases.
Take advantage of these fixed structures and processes. Write them down. What comes first? What comes second? This structure will help you to remember how you have to deal with your ingredients.
At last, you have to put your cookies in the oven and wait. What I mean by that? Take breaks. Like cookies in the oven, your newly gained knowledge needs time and the right environment to get ready. Get active, read a book or stretch a little bit after or between study sessions. If you want you can also bake real cookies.
P.S.: As I still need some inspiration for my cookie jar I am more than happy to receive your favorite (Christmas) cookie types in the comment box ☃️ 🍪 🥛
