(Listen to the full interview at SecularByNature.com) Darrel Ray is a respected author, activist, psychologist, and atheist personality who comes from a religious background. Although he left the church and his faith in the mid-'80s, he's the child of two missionaries, and his fundamentalist upbringing played a significant role in the work he does today. The author of several successful works on secularism and atheism, Ray is most widely known for The God Virus: How Religion Affects Our Lives and Culture and Sex and God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality, and his writing examines the adverse impact religion has on society. After having appeared frequently on his friend Matt Dillahunty's The Atheist Experience, Ray established his own Secular Sexuality podcast in 2014. He's also the founder of the non-profit organization Recovering from Religion, which works to assist people considering a break from religion, or are dealing with the aftermath of already having done so. Additionally, Ray is active with the Kansas City chapter of Oasis, a meeting place for the secular community to gather and discuss ideas, community involvement, and social issues. Andrew J. Enter Jen Peeples, an atheist spokesperson who is a real-life rocket scientist. Peeples is a true Renaissance woman; she's an aerospace engineer, a former military test pilot, and a widely-respected atheist activist who co-hosts the popular television show and podcast The Atheist Experience and also the acclaimed streaming show and podcast Godless Bitches (both affiliated with the Atheist Community of Austin). Peeples was raised as a Christian living in the Bible Belt, but later found her way to atheism. She served in the United States Army for 26 years, where she had to hide the fact that she was gay for fear of being dishonorably discharged. She ultimately retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Today she is able to live openly gay and she is an outspoken atheist activist. “At this point I no longer defend atheism,” she says. “I actively promote it. My life has the value, meaning, and purpose that I give it, and I'm very pleased to be affiliated with a group like the Atheist Community of Austin that shares that philosophy. Having no sufficient male role model to speak of, he ran wild and committed a criminal act or twelve. As his bio explains, Roy was “roaming the towns and wilds of the rich and poor, thieving and thinking without a curfew.” Like most teenagers, he thought he had all the answers. Then in 1999, at the age of 18, he learned otherwise. As he will discuss in this interview, Roy got into a bloody brawl that left his opponent dead. Making matters worse, Roy tried to cover up what he'd done, hiding the body. He ultimately got caught. The following year, he was sentenced to life in prison. Like a lot of people sentenced to prison, he continued with his life of crime even after he was behind bars. But in 2007, all of that changed. By this time Roy had read countless novels in prison and had begun writing both fiction and non-fiction. He began to take the writing seriously. He stopped committing crimes, instead putting pen to pad and writing about them. He has since written a number of crime novels and novellas. His most recent work is the short story collection Her Name Is Mercie. Roy is also an atheist. Having worked in the field since 1982, Cornette has worked for the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA), Mid-South Wrestling (MSW), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, known today as the WWE). Cornette has been a writer, booker, commentator, manager, and wrestler. He's always been known for being a little bit on the obnoxious side, with a brash, in-your-face style that he wears well. Cornette assures us that it's not an act—that this is the real him, and that fact becomes instantly is obvious when you listen to his podcast, The Jim Cornette Experience. Beginning in 2009, Cornette began to reveal a political side his fans had been previously unaware of. He started to speak out against things he saw the right-wing doing that angered him. He also publicly supported President Barack Obama and many Democrats. This progressive attitude and viewpoint is prevalent on his weekly podcast, where he also speaks out about his atheism and the things he sees as being the dangers of and problems with religion.
