My most consistent one is that Regulus sees Mary as Venus; the only planet visible from earth, shining just like a star even when it’s something completely different. Mary sees him just as he is, a star, one that burns and does its best to shine, even amidst its loneliness in the sky.

Here are some cannon-compliant au hcs;

- Mary and Sirius do date for a few months, but things get boring and they decide mutually to stay as friends. Regulus is PISSED. He knew his brother was stupid, but stupid enough to let this angel go, just like that? He must be genetically modified to be an absolute complete idiot. He’s baffled by it. He can’t comprehend why somebody wouldn’t want to date someone who’s kind and empathetic and honest, like Mary.

- Regulus feels immensely guilty for all the time she spends on him. He doesn’t feel worthy of it, but he wants to be. He wants to be worthy for her, but he’s not quite sure what that means. He starts to feel awkward about her kindness, unsure how to react or what to do with it. She finds his awkwardness a little endearing.

- canon compliant au, he’s still a bigot. He’s especially unsure what to think about Mary when he finds out she’s a muggleborn. He thinks “maybe she’s an exception” but when she begins to lead him down a path of questioning his parent’s beliefs, he can’t take it. He’s already unstable, and he doesn’t want to accept that he’s been wrong this whole time. Those beliefs, no matter how strange it migjt seems, have been a constant for him. Stable. Secure. He doesn’t want to believe that it’s all a lie, so he doesn’t. And if that means he has to give up Mary…he quickly decides it’s better if he does, even if it hurts them both. He sticks to becoming a DE.

- when Mary finds out he’s a DE, she’s pissed. After all she’s done to show him the way those beliefs hurt her and the people she cares for, he turns around and stabs her in the back? No. She doesn’t want to believe that, but when she comes to terms with it, she doesn’t hold back. She’s angry. And she has every right to be. Those “beliefs” he hold so dear get people like her hurt—heck, Regulus’s own peer, Bruce Mulciber, even hate crimed Mary! And he doesn’t care! And she gives up on him. When Mary confessed she gave up on him, Regulus truly began to believe if even she couldn’t forgive him—mind you, the woman who’s name is literally connected to the title of saint—than who on earth possibly could?

- Regulus writes tons of letters that he never sends. But he can’t make himself even write her name, so he refers to her as “Venus” in his unsent letters. He writes “You were not a star. You had no reason to shine as bright as you did.”

In one of my aus, Pandora brings him back to life through one of her experiments. Most events of the original timeline stay the same. James and Lily are dead, Sirius is in prison, Peter is “dead”, Marlene was murdered, Remus is alone, Pandora is a mother (she doesn’t die for another few years though), and Mary has integrated back into muggle society. Barty’s also imprisoned by that point, and Evan is also dead, having died the day Luna was born. Regulus tries desperately to find Mary, who now works at a muggle restaurant as a waitress. She’s also dating a guy named Reginald Cattermole (who, interestingly enough, canonically has a wife named Mary). Mary is not a witch anymore, she lost her memories and though she knows about magic decided to become a doctor instead. She doesn’t remember any of Hogwarts, though is aware of the magical world because of her boyfriend-almost-fiancé, Reginald. She wanted to be a witch to make her family proud, but managed to get into med school and is working as a waitress part time as well. Her family is obviously still very proud of her.
